It was a sad excuse for a library, but it probably reflected the area's previous bucolic nature. It was reported that, about 25 years ago, the Sunnyside corridor was mostly berry farms. The Happy Valley Library is in a building that is newer and far removed from the mall and the major junction of Sunnyside Rd. and I-205. In a way, this is good and bad. It's good because the location is bigger and newer, but a lot of the catchment area for this library, such as the patron base who lives closer to SE 82nd Avenue, doesn't have the ability to get around, and needs a library's services can't get here as easily. I don't remember what used to be in this newer, larger building. It wasn't designed as a library from scratch, though. The Happy Valley Library is comparable to the West Linn Library of the Clackamas County System in its size and level of services. However, the personalities are very different. This one is very spacious and open, while the West Linn Library is cozier and has more nooks and crannies. The service here is about on par with that of West Linn's, where it is good but a little cool. Is there a connection between gray skies and books that makes library employees more somber? I once walked into a library in Las Vegas only to be greeted with a "sunny disposition." I'll stay on topic. Also, this library is located in an area that appears to be "planned," with a shopping center in front, and a traffic circle with small businesses and park-like features around it. Simply stated, this is a very good neighborhood library.

That being said, I'm disappointed with both the process and the results for the recent Belmont Branch renovation. The old branch didn't have much in the way of parking, and they intentionally made it worse. Much worse. The public was allowed 'input' on the design of the new space, and the response to my questions about their survey claimed that a 'majority' of the public preferred the new design (the actual results were 317 votes out of 812 cast for this illusion of choice). The voting was for one of three designs, where one of them would involve the unthinkable destruction of the historic wing, and both of the other options had vastly reduced parking. Clearly, all decision making had been done before asking the public. According to PSU, over 156,000 people live in the 12.5 square miles of the two mile radius service area for this branch. A claim that this many people prefer walking, biking, or public transit for their library visits is absurd. The results of the recent construction are underwhelming - if you stand in the doorway between the new lobby and the old building (now the children's library), you see a bright, open space in the old wing, and massive beams supporting the ceiling of the new lobby, visually reducing the height of the space, making it dark and unwelcoming. For some reason, the lobby floor is higher at the south end of the lobby, requiring stairs and a ramp to take up prime space inside the entrance. All in all, the ground floor of the expansion seems to only contain a book return, a holds pickup area, a two person librarian's counter, and self service checkout kiosks. I assume there are workspaces for staff, but a claimed doubling of space offers very little for library patrons. I wish we received more for our money - the barn that they slapped onto the end of the old building seems lazy and drab.
