Dereck is an exceptional instructor with a lifetime of experience. I definitely recommend taking a class at NESM. The prices are very reasonable. The only thing I didn't like was the train that went passed at night. The blacksmithing I did here was one of the best experiences I have had, and I left with better skills and knowledge not to mention the tools I brought home.

This school is absolutely amazing! They are able to take youth that learn in different ways than…read morethe basic standardized methods. People learn in all different ways. Verbally, written or by seeing it. Maybe even a combination. They give youth the confidence they once lacked. The school system itself was lacking. Most of these youth were labeled as trouble makers or always Truent. They are not. They are some of the brightest youth! I went to Franklin before the program itself became more structured. It is an ever evolving program which is a good thing! I LOVED it! It empowered me to take control of my own education. I could leave if I wanted to,but I and I alone had to suffer the consequences. Mr. E is a name everyone knows as he was one of the people who began the program. He gave his all and was a true friend to everyone. We could call him anytime night or day. (Yes the teachers give the private numbers out so youth have a safe person to call,vent,go) it was truly an amazing place. Places like these need to be recognized more often and need more funding!!! Mr. Barrlow has taken over now. He was actually my math teacher when I went there. My daughter now goes and I know without a shadow of a doubt she is in good hands and will graduate with flying colors!

I have had the chance to study flamenco in various places I've lived (in Vancouver, Houston, NYC, and Andalucia) and not all flamenco teachers and studios are alike. It is really challenging to find flamenco teachers in the U.S. who keep their teaching connected to the culture and spirit of the dance as it is danced in Andalucia AND at the same time push you technically. Lindsey spent a lot of time studying and performing in Sevilla and still travels there to study and keeps connections with teachers there and brings them to Portland for workshops. Flamenco is an immensely challenging (and rewarding!) dance and Lindsey is brilliant at providing just the right supportive atmosphere for learning and trying new movements, while still pushing you beyond what you think you can do. I also love the community of people attracted to studying here, it is a great group of lovely women and men of all ages and I leave every class with a huge smile on my face. It is hard to describe how amazing it feels to get to move like you do in flamenco and how empowering and fun it is to be a percussionist with your feet for an hour and a half! There is currently a regular weekly beginner's class, intermediate class, and an intermediate lab, no experience necessary!

The children received an hour of hip-hop dance instruction in the studio, and we had a family party with children and parents in another room afterwards. A super event for our out of town visitors who needed a day away from the beach. A very professional studio; an interesting reuse of old mill space. Highly recommended.
