This Tesco Express (formerly Tesco Metro) location is over two floors on Market Street, on the…read morecorner going onto Brown Street, right opposite the Arndale. It is probably the largest convenience store in the city centre, stocking a range of essentials and a little bit more over two floors, you can get between the floors using an escalator, but there also is lift access (the lift is super slow though and has been for years!). There is a decent selection of to-go food and drinks, including a Costa Express coffee machine, you can also find the occasional item on the small yet useful hot food counter, but that does tend to go fast. The layout of the store is easy to follow, I personally dislike the two-floor format for a store like this, as it means having to spend more time going up/down escalators and searching around the store, this is the type of store you want to get in and out quickly, and being over two floors and a lack of supporting mobile payment similar to Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer nearby, there are drawbacks. Most of the staff seem friendly and helpful, but there are a couple of bad apples. There are plenty of self-service checkouts, and a couple of manned checkouts too, there always seems to be a handful of machines either not in use or broken down, so there's always a wait at the checkout for some reason. The prices are much higher now than they were under the Tesco Metro brand, so you are paying a good bit more than you would in a regular Tesco store, which is annoying! 4* - A good and large store in the city centre, yet could be far better.

After having breakfast and stopping at a couple stores at Middlebrook Retail Park, we headed over…read moreto Tesco to see what they offer. Since the Tesco in Swindon has a huge selection of American items, I thought that this store might offer the same. I am planning to make a Thanksgiving dinner and need some American items to ensure authenticity :). There is a large car park, however, if there is a football game on, you may want to stay away from this area due to traffic. The store is huge and was quite busy on Saturday afternoon. There are ATMs outside of the store, as well as a dry cleaning service. Walking inside the store actually made me feel like I was in a Wal-Mart Supercenter. It is huge! There is a cafe, salon, electronics section, beauty counter like those in a department store, bakery, and a health store. We continued straight on and went through the toys, home goods, and electronic sections. If you head to the right you'll eventually find the food section. Of course we did get a bit sidetracked and ended up getting a slow cooker since it was on sale (we will be returning it as when we plugged it in, it blew the fuse for everything in our apartment). I also got to look at Christmas decorations and saw a nice laptop for a reasonable price to replace my iBook dinosaur. Eventually we got over to the food section. The problem with me trying to do a shop in a new store is that I get distracted trying to look at everything on offer. Unfortunately this is not compatible with Mr. Snarky and I should have sent him back over to the electronics. What I like about the store, is that while it is very busy, it is very spacious so it doesn't feel like sardines in a can and making shopping a little easier. While they do offer a lot and all of the usual items, I was a bit disappointed with their World Foods Area. The first was the rice aisle which consisted mainly of Basmati rice with a couple bags of glutinous rice. For a 'World Foods' section, they should have more selection of rice and as a result I didn't get the rice that I was looking for. They do offer a lot of European foods, but the selection from other countries is not as large, including the American section. I did get the pumpkin for my pumpkin pie and pumpkin roll, but the other items that I was looking for and stocked by the Tesco in Swindon were not available. I did like that they have a 'Free From' section for those with intolerances or allergies... and it seems fairly extensive. Check out was a bit slow, but no massive queues. Besides self-checkout, they do have the scan-as-you-shop scheme as well. It is a nice store, though, very clean, well stocked, and has almost everything you could want.

It also has a cafe, a salon, a Timpson dry cleaner/key cutter, and a petrol station, as well as an on-site recycle centre. As it is quite a large and busy store, there can be quite a problem with queuing at the tills, and due to being a 24 hour store, late night shopping can see many internal lights turned off, as well as lots of cages of stock all over the place down most aisles, making access tricky. NOTE: On Bolton Wanderers match days, there is a three hour limit to be parked in their car park, after which, you can receive a £70 fine.

Before Lidl came to Oxford Road, Worldwide was the place where I did most of my shopping. My…read moreflatmate and I set ourselves a challenge - each time we went to Worldwide we would buy an item of fruit or veg which we had never tried before, bring it home, attempt to prepare it and sample it. This led to some rather funny looks at the counter. One one occasion, on asking our Kenyan friend for cooking information, he explained to us that they probably laughed at us because *no-one* buys just one bhindi. We soon learnt from this school-boy error. As well as fruit and veg I always picked up pitta, naan and other foreign breads here, but it's probably not the place to go for a reasonably priced loaf of Warburton's. They also sell exciting fizzy drinks from all over the world, baklava, mango lassi and every herb, spice, bean or pulse you could think of, all of which I can recommend. Things that I have purchased from here and regretted include tinned palak paneer, a tray of 30 very unethical eggs, weird smelling incense, cheese and DIY henna. As a vegetarian I've never looked at the meat counter. But I know that my Muslim flatmate bought her meat there as it is all Halal and my Chinese flatmates bought their meat there because they sold all the disgusting-sounding parts of animals that they liked to boil up in stews, such as chicken feet. I challenge you to visit Worldwide and not to come away with more than you went in for. Even the fruit and veg is priced so that you end up with 3 cucumbers (£1) rather than the one (50p) you went in for!

The store is in a good town centre location, close to Spinning Gate Shopping Centre and the Bus Station, with some buses stopping outside. It also houses Holland & Barrett and Sports Direct locations, which is a little strange in a supermarket, but at least it is expanding the brands available here, alongside your typical Cafe and Mobile Shops you'd expect to find in a large Tesco. While the product range was OK, I was disappointed with the poor choice of ready meals, more importantly, the flagship premium range from Tesco, out of any large Tesco Store, they probably have the worst "Tesco Finest" selection, with my favourite sausage and mash meal not being stocked here, they didn't even have a tag for it, so it wasn't just out of stock! They do have a small Scan as You Shop area which I feel makes the whole shopping experience much quicker and easier, but both Sainsbury's and ASDA nearby have this so it isn't unique. 3* - OK, If you do have more time there are better supermarkets in Leigh, but this store is OK and of course it is in the best location, with a Nando's nearby too!

As such, whilst there's a lot of locally sourced fruit and veg (and things from further afield) you'll also find lots of dairy and meat for sale as well. There's fresh, chilled and store cupboard foods on sale - all ethically sourced, and much of it organic. They even do household products too, with an emphasis on being environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Behind the counter there is freshly baked bread and an assortment of gorgeous looking cakes and desserts. Staff are always helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The store has a lot of competition in the area, with an enormous Tesco nearby, Aldi down the road and an M&S Food Hall practically next door - but it genuinely offers something different to the area and is well worth some of your hard earned pennies.

Just as it appeared that the snow gritters recently stopped short of Salford... literally, at the 'You are now IN Salford' (I've never understood this whole capitalised 'IN' thing) sign, it would also appear that Tescos cater to their surroundings, and as this Metro outlet resides in the almost Soviet Salford Shopping City, well, one can understand why. It was my nearest supermarket when I was at Salford University (I say super because it's rather large for a Metro), therefore the low prices were a huge bonus, but the range was not. As I've mentioned previously in my review of Manchester Centre's more urbanite, yuppie Tesco Metro, here be Eccles cakes. You'll find the odd exotic item but they're few and far between - branches evidently stock up on what sells and if it ain't broke, don't fix it as I said about River Island. Thus, this is a great option for the basic essentials, but if you want to put on a range of party dips or make a Moussaka, you might find yourself having to trundle round a bunch of other shops too.

You'll need a lot of time for this one as it is located out of the way, tucked in a corner, barely advertised, nested in an upper concourse, reached by a slow escalator of this huge, busy, wonderful railway station with lots of food places and shopping. The staff were friendly, cheerful and efficient despite the fact that they are likely minimum wage in this trade damaged, post Brexit, insular, not so sunny uplands country. The politicians allow mega business to pay lousy wages by making the taxpayer subsidise cheap labour and they make extra money at the other end by adding extra charges on already overpriced Starbucks coffee in their non franchised stores. The railway came here in 1830 and the first terminus opened in 1840 so it won't be very long before it will have its 200th birthday. It thrived on trade now long gone. Still, it's back now. Upstairs, though, and whilst you'd think perhaps they'd be looking to counteract the lower "natural" footfall they'd see with a bigger setup or something it's not really a big location. There's a decent amount of seating for the station, and not many people were up there when I went so it may become a go-to if I'm caught waiting for a train. Drink-wise, it's Starbucks. They're all pretty much the same. Price-wise, I didn't notice it being any more wallet-lightening than any other Starbucks. A couple o' quid for a fine, if not overly remarkable, coffee. Would I make a point of going here? No, but if you're happening past and are brand loyal (or have a freebie) then why not.
