I like to keep things local, so I called these guys up and ordered a cleaning and inspection for $179. Our fireplace doesn't draft well, so we though it must be dirty. Kent Swanson came over and did an amazingly thorough inspection, which was tricky because my roof is super steep and he had to use 4 strategically placed ladders to get to the chimney. He explained that my problem was structural and didn't push an unnecessary cleaning. These guys are knowledgeable, courteous, and on time. I'd definitely recommend them. I selected Mt. Tabor based on his very positive Yelp reviews. I'm glad I did. Kent, the owner, does much more than just clean the chimney. He looks at the house as if he owned it. He inspected the chimneys, the roof, the furnace chimney, the flashing around the roof and gave me a thorough report. He told me to keep an eye on certain area of the home but didn't try to up-sell me into more and expensive repairs that weren't necessary at this time. In addition to his professional expertise, he is very courteous. He covered all surfaces around the fireplace to keep them clean. I highly recommend Mt. Kent did a fantastic job of repairing my chimney and the flashing! He also was the only chimney expert who noticed a problem with the exhaust pipe from my furnace (I had five different pros look at it). Mt. Tabor Chimney Company was one of four that I contacted for chimney repair estimates at our new house in Portland. Kent impressed us with his knowledge, patience, and thorough inspection. Their price was very competitive, he was available as soon as the power company could turn off the power (electric lines went next to the chimney) and completed everything right on schedule (even though mother nature threw a storm at him.. oh Portland!). Our chimney had to be cleaned, have about 12 rows (courses) removed and rebuilt, new caps put on, tuck point much of the chimney, refinish the base of our fireplace, and a new fire place screen. These guys rock. I thought I need a cleaning because of intermittent poor drafting. I called and talked to somebody for fifteen minutes and learned a whole lot about stoves, when they do or don't draw well in Oregon weather, how to find out the make and the manual, when to schedule safety or cleaning work. I would not recommend Kent Swanson from Mt. Tabor Chimney for any work. We did not do a good job a check with Angie's List first but rather just went on word of mouth when selecting a contractor. Live and learn. Kent Came out last year after we had a chimney fire and inspected our chimney. He told us that we would need a liner installed into the chimney. We were fine with that and told him that we would wait through the summer and call him prior to the heating season. He told us to decide on either a 6" or 8" liner and said that the 6" liners are more popular because most stoves are 6". He also said that there are a few stoves with 8" flues . We decided to stick with the 8" because it would fit our stove and if we bought another stove with an 8" flue it would work also. We called him and told him and he said we would write up the contract. The contract required we place half down so we provided him with $793.00 to cover the cost of the materials. No problem. We scheduled time and thought we were on the way to getting this all fixed prior to the heating season. On the install day Kent and a helper arrived and they had one person up top and one in the house. He started to slide the liner in and found that it would not go all the way down because of a slight jog at the bottom of the chimney. He pulled out the liner and told us that the liner would not work and that we now owned the liner because it was scratched and could not be returned. We have sense learned from other chimney contractors that jogs in chimneys are very common and that he should have been aware of this because he is the professional not us. I called him on 10/8/12 and asked him to call me. He did return my call and i explained my concerns and asked that he return the money that we had paid him. I also told him that if he did we would use him for the remainder of the repair which still needs to be done. I told him that this way he would be making some money if in fact he could not return the liner. We have been told that he should be able to return the liner. He said he understood and would have to "crunch some numbers" and get back to me. He committed to call me on Thursday 10/11/12 to discuss. He has failed to get back to me and today is Saturday 10/13. We have now agreed to have another contractor finish the work. This contractor was embarrassed to hear our story. I would not recommend Mt. Tabor Chimney Co. for any work what so ever. We will be working through legal channels to get our money back. read more
