Honestly, one of the best town museums I have been to. It is donation based, and I made sure to donate because I want this place to stay up and running. They have many interactive exhibits for all ages. You actually get to touch and handle the artifacts. The workers are kind and knowledgable. Postcards for 10 cents. Clean restrooms. The museum was a great addition to our vacation. The curators were very knowledgeable and the hatchery was interesting

I highly recommend this little museum. They have exhibits on trains, history of the area, cloud formation, fire fighters, fish hatchery, water flow and more. you can touch and play with all the exhibits. my kids initially didn't want to go in, but we ended up spending 3hrs inside! And the volunteers are the sweetest people!! read more

We had a great time. There were 3 generations in our group and there was something for everyone. We stayed about 2 hours and we could easily return. The history in this area is both fascinating and disturbing with the displacement and mixers of the rightful land owners the indigenous people. There are many artifacts to give you reference points to life here previously. The woven baskets have to be seen to be belie. There are excellent exhibits on our current water challenges. read more

We enjoy this museum very much! Nestled beside a small park & the fish hatchery in Mount Shasta, it is a fantastic place to take children for a science &/or history field trip ... or to learn more about mountain culture & local history. We have attended many wonderful events here from galas, movie nights & Q&As sponsored by the Avalanche Center to regional art exhibits featuring talent from the area. The staff is very knowledgeable! There is also a gift shop for souvenirs. Plus you can become a member as well to pledge your ongoing support. read more

This is an interesting well maintained little museum. It covers a lot, from how Mount Shasta formed, to the native Americans who lived in the area, to the history of the city and more. Because of its small size it really doesn't take very long to go through, but it was both educational and interesting. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area, and have interest in the area's history and or Mount Shasta. read more

This is the one gem in mt Shasta if you have kids. Not much to do in this small town but this place was great for our 11mo. We were able to walk around and feed the fish. Then the museum was the best part. It's free with a minimum donation of a $1. Most of the people in there were volunteers. They had great information about the area and the history of it. Also great interactive exhibits for the kids. There was a tunnel, toys, train sets, and even a train engine to conduct. I highly recommend stopping by if you have the time. read more

What a wonderful place!!! There truly was something to keep everyone in our multi-generational family happy for hours on two consecutive days For children of all ages, there are hands-on activities which teach in a fun way about local history. For the grown-ups, there are fascinating displays on local history and geology of volcanic Mt Shasta and other nearby peaks. There are rotating displays as well. We were lucky enough to see one about the history of the Interstate 5 through the area. You know how sometimes, you go to a museum and feel so overwhelmed with information overload, you're mentally exhausted by the time you leave? One of the things we like here is the perfect amount of written description at each exhibit. This museum is run and staffed totally by volunteers, and admission is free. It's maintained beautifully--no small feat with little kids running energetically going through baskets, etc.around. Even the bathrooms were spotless. Of course, we donated. zAs you enter, look to your left and see the most original donation container ever! This museum so good, we visited two days in a row. The lovely gentleman on duty just about had to kick us out the second afternoon--we didn't want to leave! I don't want to describe the exhibits. Trust me--they're well worth a visit if you are in the area, or even just passing through if you need a break from the freeway. Come and be surprised! For the warmer months, there are picnic tables outside by the fish hatchery. Bonus: there's a great, very reasonably-priced gift shop too! read more

Growing up we made many trips to Mt. Shasta to visit the grandparents. On every trip whether it was winter spring summer or fall we always had to go the museum. The museum wasn't always open but when it was, it was fun to look around. It's basically the same everytime you go, but always a simple treat. There is a gift shop and the folks working (i believe they are all volunteer, but I could be mistaken) are awesome and knowledgeable. One of the best things about the museum is the fish hatchery that is attached to it! For a quarter you can get a handful of fish food from the treat dispenser. Always fun to throw in a handful and watch the fishes go crazy! Good family fun! read more

Small but packed museum. 5 stars because it is free (though they ask for a $1 donation). Lots of activities for kids like dressing up or building with blocks or pretending to be a fire truck driver or train engineer, or put on a puppet show in the small log cabin. Cool videos about the volcano but it was really hard to hear it because the volume was "responsive" to it would get quieter when we were quiet (because we were listening to it) so we had to make noise so that it would respond and be loud enough that we could hear it. Kids were having a great time in the activity corner we actually couldn't get them to leave st first even with the offer of ice cream. Right next to the fish hatchery. read more

This is a small museum but it is packed with so many hands-on, fun activities and exploration rooms for toddlers. Train sets, volcano tunnel, fire truck, etc. Very kid friendly and a good place for toddlers to expend energy away from the heat. Kids ages 2-5 could easily spend hours here. read more

I just visited this place with my 4 year old granddaughter. She had been there once before, so decided to "show us around". She loved everything in this place including being able to put on a fireman's uniform and helmet and get up on an old fire engine and run the siren. Same kind of thing for a railroad conductor. Many different exhibits for kids here, and it was difficult to get her to leave. The fish hatchery next door turned out to be a big hit, though. Food for the fish is provided free to visitors, and tossing it in to the fish is great fun, causing a mini "feeding frenzy" each toss. If you are looking for a couple of hours of kid activities, this is a great place. read more

I travel all over and visit museums whenever possible. This little museum is really worth the visit ! They have really changed it since last I was there with all new exhibits, and, are planning to add a railroad exhibit for next April. I've been to Mount Shasta many times and somehow missed the treasure of the museum!! I'm so glad we made it a priority this time. The murals jump from the walls into exhibits. Everything is fantastically interactive and through the visit we learned about the area, trains, weather, geology and the beautifully incredible quilt show. All the presentations of the artifacts are fascinating and draw you in. We were in a group of adults and easily could have spent hours more. I kept thinking how much my children would enjoy this museum too! I loved learning about the geology & ventricular clouds of Mt. Shasta. I was fascinated by the fish farm ponds. The gift shop was fantastic and a great way to bring some of the museum memories home! read more

Wonderful museum for a small tourist town. With very friendly staff! I had my grandson who is 2 years old... Rainy day and bored sitting at home. One of the current exhibits was about firefighting in Siskiyou County. Since we have a family member on the local fire department, we decided to go visit this museum. I didn't think it would last very long because of a two-year-olds attention span. Upon entering, we noticed several families with children of all ages. Everyone was enjoying the hands-on interactive ability learning about the different topics. At the railroad display there was an actual train set up to simulate actually drive an engine! They had several hands-on options such as a old fashion fire truck. My grandson put on a little uniform, climbed onto the truck, rang the bell and attach the hoses, then he explored every aspect of the fire display. He was curious and engaged in all the different areas he could play-learn.....I was able to read all of the information and enjoy the museum even with a two-year-old!!!! Highly recommend visiting our local museum! Good job to the staff for providing an epic adventure!!! read more

We went to this museum again in the past week. It is a gem and gave us a great way to spend several hours in this small town; we were lucky to be there during the 150th anniversary of the state parks as shared by the quilt show. It, too, is amazing that a local museum this size, staffed by volunteers, has the same caliber of wall murals as the huge Railroad Museum in Sacramento, CA. The murals and art installations from the muralist have to be seen; they make the museum come to life! You get to see the majestic mountain showing the transition of the town, railroad history with the peekabo window, the train mural and the real train that kids can drive with the sounds and sights on a flat screen TV!. Then there was the fantastic settlers' cabin [art installation] that says kids Do Touch - where kids can lay in the 'sleep tight' bed and see what would be inside a cabin - so fantastic!. Lots of museums have descriptions of what you are seeing; this one has large enough print that you can actually read them! I was also amazed at the number of hands on activities for visitors. If you want to learn about all things Shasta and from all the eras get yourself here! I highly recommend it. read more
