I am not a huge fan of the Old West. Many I would say, are dying to get here to see the graves of Wild Bill and Clalmity Jane. I can't say this place was to die for, but it does have a picturesque charm about it. While I was at the place where Calamity Jane was interned, a lady with a guide book in hand was quick to point out that Calamity Jane would visit Wild Bill's grave often and sit by his grave for several hours at a time. Then she said Wild Bill could not stand Calamity Jane at all. I could imagine a whirling sound emanating in protest from below, as she spins in her grave. We were literally within spitting distance to her final place of rest. I am sure there are many more tales to tell in the Wild Wild West.

Great historical stop. Cemetery with its own gift shop! Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Sheriff Bullock, and other notable figures final resting place. Excellent views of Deadwood.

This was my second stop to Deadwood and my first time at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Unfortunately on my first trip, the roads were too snowy and icy to make this trek and the road to the cemetery is VERY steep. This is a must stop, doesn't take long at all, but if you're interested in the history of the area at all, you have to check it out. Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Potato Creek Johnny, Seth Bullock and other Deadwood notables and their kin are buried here. I've heard there is admission of $1, but no one was there when I went so I just walked right in. It was peaceful, beautiful and overlooked the little city. I saw several deer prancing around. Lovely.

I'm a huge fan of visiting cemeteries! My husband and I were on a long-distance motorcycle journey and had just come from Mount Rushmore. Since we're both fans of the HBO series Deadwood, we just had to take time to visit the final resting places of some of our favorite historical characters. You'll find William Hickok, Martha Jane Cannary and Soloman Star. We really loved that Calamity Jane's dying request was granted, "Bury me next to Wild Bill." However, the star of the graveyard is Seth Bullock. He's buried a mile up on a hill with his wife and no one else. It's pretty obvious they held him in very high regard. So, even though we we pretty sweaty and hot from blasting along the roads of the Black Hills in the searing heat, we knew what had to be done. We hiked up the darn hill, it's rather step. Along the way we talked about how much effort must have been put in to transporting his body and coffin with the rudimentary tools of 1919, the year he died. Again, this speak volumes of how the town felt about him. They loved him and we loved visiting his resting place. We each left a stone on top of each grave we visited to show our respect. Wonderful place.

We are big fans of Wild West, so coming to Deadwood SD was on our to do list for awhile, and not visiting it's most popular residents would be sin. The story of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill is what makes the whole atmosphere of the city and surrounding mountains so much more special. Admission to cemetery is $1/pp-have to admit that is the first time I have been ever asked to pay to enter the cemetery, but than seeing all the people going the same way, we realized that it must create lots of cleanups. There is adorable shop right outside the cemetery.

Visited this cemetery within a brief visit to Deadwood, and primary (and only) reason was to see the graves of Will Bill and Calamity Jane. Bitter cold day made the visit brief, but impressed with the grounds, and appreciated the opportunity to see the historic figures' final resting spot.

For any of you Historians out there, deadwood's mt moriah is a must... It's not just about wild bill but the culture that help develop it's courageous quest further west... Overlooking the hill especially at the way top is something else.... Something bout this place that makes u say "damn these white peepo are fucking nuts!" I love deadwood and can't wait til i come back =D

We really loved the HBO Show, Deadwood, so we stopped by the town on our way from South Dakota to Wyoming. We were really disappointed in Deadwood. It was a little too tacky for us (the place is mostly casinos) and we were upset that the original Gem Saloon had burned down years ago. However, they do have a really nice restored, historic Railroad station you should stop by if you are a history buff. While in the town, we decided to stop by the Cemetery before we left town. Al Swearengen isn't buried here (He's interred in Iowa. If you haven't seen the show, he's one of the main characters, played by Ian McShane, loosely based on the original owner of the Gem Saloon in Deadwood.), but three more famous, historical individuals can be found here (all three were portrayed in the show too). Wild Bill's and Calamity Jane's graves are located at the very front of the cemetery's entrance. Seth Bullock's and his wife's tombstone are located at the top of an extremely difficult trail (it is a steep 750 foot climb) with an incredible view of Mt. Roosevelt.

Wild Bill, Calamity Jane and Potato Creek Johnny are all next to each other.

If you're in Deadwood, Mount Moriah certainly warrants a visit. The road to the cemetery is very steep, and you have to drive through a neighborhood to get there. There is an entrance fee of, I believe, $1 per person. That money helps to maintain the grounds. Once you enter the cemetery be prepared for a hike. It's on the side of a mountain so everything is up hill. Some of the must sees while there: Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Potato Creek Johnny, Seth Bullock, and Preacher Smith. Aside from visiting these famous graves, you get to enjoy the amazing view! It is simply breathtaking.

This is a historic site in Deadwood. They have a tour you can take or you can visit on your own. They accept donations.

There were so many of these sites filled with flowers and memorials. Even the columbarium. And the people. On this overcast, cold, blustery day, people were everywhere early. At a time of day many are just getting up to begin their day, dozens and dozens more were here, remembering someone. Extraordinary. And the crowds of people never let up. The cars were backing up outside the gate. This national cemetery is off the interstate and easily visible from it. The white markers leave no doubt. Despite that, it's very quiet. Other than the flags blowing in the wind and the occasional startup of a car, no extraneous noises took away from the sheer magnitude of what this place represents. Within this approximately 110 acre cemetery is a special memorial to Korean War veterans, and another for Vietnam War veterans. As always, everything is impeccably maintained. Although there is no dedicated honor guard for military burials at this location, there are some honor guards in the nearby area, who will work with the families. I really have to applaud So.Dakota. The non-cooperative weather didn't stop the residents or the visitors. There were more flowers and memorials than I have ever seen on any of the Memorial Day visits to other national cemeteries. I think that speaks volumes for the community and the way they honor those buried here.

Absolutely beautiful national cemetary. The military services are an amazing and respectful tribute…read moreto our family members that served our country.
