There were so many of these sites filled with flowers and memorials. Even the columbarium. And the people. On this overcast, cold, blustery day, people were everywhere early. At a time of day many are just getting up to begin their day, dozens and dozens more were here, remembering someone. Extraordinary. And the crowds of people never let up. The cars were backing up outside the gate. This national cemetery is off the interstate and easily visible from it. The white markers leave no doubt. Despite that, it's very quiet. Other than the flags blowing in the wind and the occasional startup of a car, no extraneous noises took away from the sheer magnitude of what this place represents. Within this approximately 110 acre cemetery is a special memorial to Korean War veterans, and another for Vietnam War veterans. As always, everything is impeccably maintained. Although there is no dedicated honor guard for military burials at this location, there are some honor guards in the nearby area, who will work with the families. I really have to applaud So.Dakota. The non-cooperative weather didn't stop the residents or the visitors. There were more flowers and memorials than I have ever seen on any of the Memorial Day visits to other national cemeteries. I think that speaks volumes for the community and the way they honor those buried here.

Absolutely beautiful national cemetary. The military services are an amazing and respectful tribute…read moreto our family members that served our country.

This tiny national cemetery, about two acres, is not easy to find. It's listed on the National…read moreRegister of Historic Places, and if you find your way here, it might be because you're visiting the Fort Meade Recreation area, in which this cemetery is located. It's on a hill, surrounded by tall trees and lilac bushes around the fence line, accessible by a very bumpy gravel road, best suited for the ATV's that were in plentiful supply on the recreation area, It's an unusual place, there are both the traditional government-issued headstones and private monuments placed by family or friends. What stood out for me are the number of children buried here. Not just children of soldiers, but also children of the Sioux. There were housekeepers, nurses, nannies, general household staff, Native Americans -- at least according to their headstones. The historic info provided by the cemetery association, indicate this cemetery was begun by a couple of surviving members of Custer's 7th cavalry -- obviously not the ones involved at Little Big Horn, but didn't really explain it. What also struck me, were the sites separated by wooden fences for families and the iron pipe fencing around the grave of a member of the Prussian nobility. There are two Medal of Honor recipients buried here. Two of the first after the Medal of Honor was created. This place is a curious mix of old, traditional military, and old non-military headstones. It is all historic. It's impressive, but not in the way of Black Hills Nat'l Cemetery, located nearby, but for pure historic perspective.
