We both enjoyed going to class together each week - parents get to participate, too! Ms. Tan is really fabulous with young kids and knows how to make things fun, develops their love and appreciation for music, and keeps everyone on task and engaged. In the Music Wonderland level, they learn musical concepts, ear training, solfège singing, and how to really listen to a piece of music and "hear" the story and feelings it's conveying. Some friends asked why I don't just teach my kids myself while they are little (I was / am trained in classical piano for over 15 years). I decided to bring my son here for the Yamaha curriculum, ear training, the fun, interactive group experience, and since he says he loves going to Ms. Tan's class each week. My son is excited to start the Junior Music Course Level 1 group piano class this upcoming school year!

The program is structured, fun and well-rounded, designed wonderfully for kids. Ms Tan and her teachers are very professional, patient and dedicated to nurture the musical soul in our little one. My mom sent me to a Yamaha music school when I was young, so she is also super supportive and happy that we are giving our son the gift of music as well.

In the year that my kids have been in lessons with her they have played more music than I did in my first few years. They enjoy playing songs they've heard, composing and improvising songs and singing along while they play. They have developed a love for the piano. Every house we go to that has a piano they immediately want to put on a show for everyone. Kym is a patient and supportive teacher. She constantly asks for feedback and offers support to both the parents and the students. She finds different ways of engaging the students through games, stories, exercises. I also love that she has the kids play one community service performance for a senior community. As with any lessons there is tuition and materials fees but of you want the best for your child you're willing to make that investment. Tuition isn't unreasonable and I'm totally willing to pay for the wonderful app she uses with the kids. The app helps then track their practice time, what assignments they should be working on, motivates them because they can see how much their friends have practiced and also provides them a communication portal to Kym. They can message back and forth when they have questions instead of playing something wrong for a week. Kym will immediately send them a message back with guidance and sometimes even videos! This method isn't for everyone but my kids love it. My daughter hugs Kym all the time because she thinks so much of Kym and my son loves going to lessons. I love listening to my son play popular songs sing along. I love that my daughter can play blues songs like a pro. And all this within a years time!

I have so much to say about Kym and Simply Music, I don't know where to start!…read more First, about Simply Music. Yes, it is not a traditional piano learning program. The student does not start with learning how to read notes/sheet music. First, they get comfortable with the piano and *confident* in their ability to make great sounding music. During this process they learn how to play with one hand and both hands, how to play chords (although it's not described as such), how to *create their own music*, and how to move their hands around the keyboard comfortably. They get comfortable with the instrument itself. They learn to follow simple patterns that are common in music. There is teacher-led instruction and pre-recorded video instruction. As they progress, note reading, music theory, and more traditional aspects of piano learning are incorporated in a very elegant fashion. By the time they get to note reading they are ready and excited. This approach is so critical to their later success and how they *feel* about learning piano. I learned piano in a much more traditional fashion. In a traditional program, you get a few music books (maybe Practice and Repertoire) and a theory workbook. Note reading is emphasized from the get-go, and turns learning piano into a three-pronged situation: learning how to play the actual instrument, learning how to read music, and learning music theory. This is fine, and how most people learn, but it is not as naturally reinforcing and "fun". It can be challenging for students, and especially those with learning differences. As an educator, a casual musician, and a parent, I strongly believe Simply Music is superior to traditional methods. This is my opinion after about six months of lessons. Ok, now let's talk about Kym. Kym is, quite simply, a master instructor. She is positive at *every turn*. She is intuitive about what the student needs (more/less challenge, steps broken down, etc). She has a thousand different ways up her sleeve to explain and demonstrate a concept. She has a beautiful-sounding piano and she plays it beautifully! My kids adore her. *In most traditional piano lessons*, you play your assigned songs for your teacher and s/he gives you feedback. The teacher looks at your workbook pages to make sure you did them correctly. You might spend a few minutes trying parts of a new song, then a new assignment is given, and the usually 30-minute lesson is over. *With Kym*, you record the items you've been assigned and send them to her (usually) the day before your lesson. On her own time, she reviews them and makes feedback notes. Then, when your 40-minute lesson begins, she gives positive, helpful feedback about your songs. This takes 5-10 minutes. The entire remainder of the lesson is dedicated to her teaching and your student practicing concepts. You are getting *so much learning* for your dollar! I hate to say it like that, but lessons do cost money and so this may be important to you. Kym uses a fantastic practice app that helps you/your student organize your practices well and keeps track of how long you've been playing each day. The kids find it very motivating. The whole package is just...awesome. My kids love piano because of Kym and Simply Music. If you've spent time torturing your child with piano lessons...forcing them to practice, enduring eye rolls and whining, all while you promise them that they'll "thank you later"...then you might understand how profound it is to find a program and teacher that nearly eliminates all of that. I highly recommend Kym and the Simply Music piano learning program.

I could have driven by this place 1000 times and would never know there were music lessons here. The front desk girl was nice and the place is spotless clean. The instructor we had was animated and great with my son. What I find to be the most awesome is that the people here actually love music, so they seem to work here to spread the joy of making music. I was a bit reluctant when my son said he wanted to play drums, but after seeing how excited he is and how well he is doing, I'm sold. We purchased a set of Alexis drums so he can wear headphones, this allows him to practice while we sit quietly in another room doing something else. They have both regular drums and electronic drums at the studio. As you walk past the different rooms, you see various children and teachers and if you look close enough, you can even see the little light bulb above the kids heads. I find it amazing watching kids learn and I find it ever more amazing seeing someone actually enjoy teaching children. It makes my heart melt. These guys are talented, experienced and work very good with kids. I am impressed and will be introducing my daughter to the guitar soon after. My desire to have her take guitar lessons is solely based on the enthusiasm I've seen with the teachers. The drum sessions are 30 minutes, which is perfect since anything more would be sensory overload. You'd be amazed at what a 9 year old can pickup in 30 minutes, especially with an instructor that's excited to teach him. I tip my hat and say BRAVO, job well done Matt Burk Music Studio, I am a fan!

As I approached she didn't even say hello, she was stuck on her phone playing some game. I asked several times, "hey, can I sign my lil bro up for lessons". Finally she responded "what do you want, sure". My lil bro is kind of an energetic happy kid, he told her "I'm excited to learn the drums miss". She grunted and went off on a tangent about how its the hardest instrument to learn (its not) and it maybe wasn't for kids (kids can learn the drums lady). She kind of bummed him out saying this so I left. I get that being in a customer service position is hard, I myself was in customer service as a waiter, so I know that the service I got was pretty trash. Decided to take my brother to a different school. The teachers here may be good, or even great, but the front desk service turned me off too much. Ciao!

This school has phenomenal teachers, fabulous group music classes, and unparallelled theory and composition training. All their students study individually with instructors as well as in ensemble settings, and all take separate theory classes. They perform at least 4 times per year, which is great practice! It's a wonderful music community, one I only experienced when I got to college! I wish they had had a school like this when I was a child! We are not planning for our children to be professional musicians (and indeed I am not, either), but I appreciate that my children are in an environment that maximizes their potential. My children play piano, and it has always been fun, move-at-your-own-pace, and encouraging. My little ones are pretty sensitive, so negative pressure or stress would really turn them off--but they love this place and all their teachers, and happily skip into the building each week! The classes and the practice are definitely a time commitment, but the kids love it, and we are committed to making music an integral part of their lives. There is excellent instruction for all levels, from pre-schoolers and young children (like mine) through high school. It is an excellent experience for children, from 18 months to 18 years, and the music education is incomparable. Suzuki Music Institute of Dallas offers music lessons to children and their families. The instruments taught are violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, harp and organ. The teachers are committed, caring and extremely well trained. The school's history is long and its core mission has remained unchanged since it was first founded over 45 years ago. For the youngest students, SMID has the "Kodomo" class that is very good and unique. Imagine a circle of two-year-olds and their parents being led in song and rhythmic play by a teacher who has decades of music pedagogy experience, then add another equally knowledgeable and talented musician accompanying those children on a grand piano. This excellent class is affordable and meets on Saturday mornings. Instrument lessons are available for children age 3 and up. In addition to a weekly private lesson, there is a weekly group class and a theory class. Children, working a little each day with their parents, progress quickly and can do very impressive things musically. It is not unusual for children as young as 5 or 6 to be proficient music readers. The students love their teachers. It is possible, and not uncommon, for a student to have the same teacher for several years at a time. This long, caring relationship between teacher, student AND the parent, has a way of propelling children to do great things. Children are taught as individuals and the program is paced to each child's needs and abilities. Despite what other posters might have said, this school is the opposite of competitive! There are many special-needs children who are in the program, learning and growing. The spirit of non-competitiveness is actually intrinsic to the method; it was baked-in by Shinichi Suzuki himself and is carefully maintained at the school through ongoing parent and student education. I believe that the eduction my children are receiving at SMID will give a number of skills that will help them throughout their lives. They will probably not be professional musicians, but that is not the goal. The real goals for my children include learning that disciplined practice (work) can bring exciting and valuable skills, that effective collaboration with others is possible and rewarding, and that music can be beautiful and fun. Though a great value in my opinion, this is not the cheapest or easiest of music programs. There are other places where parents can simply drop off their children for instrument lessons and not have to be bothered with anything other that listening to the occasional practice. However, for those families who wish to do something more than "check the box" of getting music lessons for their kid, to instead actively pursue the rewards that a quality music education can give, this is the very best place for them.
