I took him…read moreto the North Lakes Emergency vet who proceeded to tell me he may have been bitten by a brown or red belly black snake and I either had to pay $5500 or voluntarily euthanise my cat. I did state I had seen a whip snake in my yard earlier and vet advised me that was no issue as they weren't fatal to cats. I repeatedly stated my cat appears to have been in a fight and they continued with telling me to do the process for a snake bite or put my cat to sleep despite there being no evidence at all my cat had been bitten by a snake. I was asked 4-5 times if I wished to voluntarily euthanise my cat, which I refused. After two hours I told the vet to stop treatment of my cat and I would take him home if he was exhibiting no symptoms and upon doing so the vet returned with my cat saying he appeared to be "perking up". Turns out there was NOTHING wrong with my cat. NOTHING. If I had followed the vets advice I would have subjected my cat to unnecessary, painful and very expensive treatment placing myself in debt (was told it would be $5500 as a starting cost and would go up due to more testing, so overnight stay etc) or would have put him to sleep. This appeared to be just a money grab and they were playing on my love for my pet and the fear of putting him to sleep to make me pay for very expensive treatment. They diagnosed her with "dehydration" and allege that they ran tests on her overnight as well as putting her on fluids and observation. Around 2am they called my mum to tell her our dog was running around and eating and drinking perfectly well. They charged my family $1500 for this "service". When she was picked up, my mum could see no difference in her. My mum questioned them in addition to asking why there were no blood tests run. They said that it isn't standard for them or necessary in this case. Our dog continued to deteriorate so my mum made an appointment at a different vet - Scarborough Veterinary Surgery. We had also googled her symptoms by this point and believed she had kidney failure. As soon as our dog was brought to Scarborough Vet she was diagnosed with kidney failure and deemed terminal. She was put down within a few hours of that visit, after we all had a chance to say goodbye. At best the staff at North Lakes Pet Emergency are incompetent and careless, and at worst they are liars who do the bare minimum for your animal while charging the maximum rate they can. Not only did they give false reports, mistreat our dog and fail to do the basic tests to form a proper and accurate diagnosis, they also made her suffering worse by putting her on an IV and forcing her failing kidneys to process even more fluids. North Lakes Pet Emergency, your business is a disgrace and you should all be ashamed of yourselves for taking advantage of pet owners in distress.
