I'm addicted to thrift stores and 'ukay-ukays'. Not only because I don't have a lot of money and I…read more-can- be cheap, but personally, it's a thrilling, satisfying experience and past-time that naturally curious folks would enjoy. Seriously, you'll never know what thing of beauty awaits you (and for less, too)! A couple of my prized possessions (mostly clothes, artwork/trinkets) I've purchased from such stores. I live 2 minutes away from Go Green Japan Surplus, so I frequent this place quite often to look around, see what's available. I really find the whole experience entertaining, to say the least. I mean, all these odds and ends from another culture, owned by a stranger you will most likely never, ever meet--who may also be still alive, or dead! Okay, that's not very enticing. But really, with a combination of luck, perseverance, and a good eye, you can really come home with a lot of good finds. This place mostly sells second hand furniture and home accessories. Their furniture can be a bit pricey, so do choose wisely. It might be helpful to check brand new items in other places first for a price basis. If you're a mug/teacup/plate hoarder, they have a huge selection of ceramics with novelty designs (i.e. ceramic sake glasses with erotic Japanese artwork called Shunga). For outdoorsy types, beautiful, secondhand Japanese bikes and surfboards are available here, too!

There's a relatively large warehouse-type store in the middle of Dona Soledad Avenue in Bicutan,…read moreParanaque City that simply calls itself Japan Store. It is, of course, a second-hand shop that sells a wide variety of houseware, furniture, home décor, bicycles and just about anything that can be sold used. Every so often, the Japan Store will sell shoes that look to be in good condition. I chanced upon a pair of tripods that I had been looking for and one was being sold for P1,200 and the other for P2,000. The most interesting item available was an old-style slot machine. Two of them actually. It didn't have the lever of the typical one-armed bandit, making the P5,000 gizmos next generation slot machines. The place also has surf boards and more cups and mugs than I could count. One seemingly fast moving item would be wheelchairs, as every so often a few would be on display, only to be gone a week later. Cabinets, clocks, kitchen utensils are also plentiful. For those who like to restore old furniture, Japan Store has a wide array to choose from. This place has been around for years so it's safe to presume that business must be booming. I like to visit it just to see what new old stuff they have for bargain hunters like me. I'm still waiting for them to have a classic juke box for sale, and I will probably bargain like crazy to have it.

I spent a lot of time here. As soon as you walk into the mall, it doesn't feel like you're in the Philippines anymore. The canal was nice to see during the day and at night. You can even take a gondola through the canal. They also have an area where you can feed pigeons seeds. They have a lot of the stores and the restaurants that we have in the US. I was joking around saying that I traveled 7200 miles to eat at a Denny's in the Philippines. Lol. And you know I had to hit up the Uniqlo here! Will I be back? Of course. Especially if I stay at the same Airbnb. I'll see you when I see you Venice Grand Canal Mall!

Encircling this mall are apartments, condos and office towers. The mall offers a lot: a supermarket; bookstores; fast food and casual dining restaurants; a multi-screen movie theater; spaces for dance and play--and a lot of retail shopping. You can also buy tickets for a gondola ride or rent a swan boat. This location provided an opportunity for me to people watch; examine products and brands unfamiliar to me; and to price compare goods in the PHL, versus back home. It was interesting.

The look and feel is very similar to strip malls in the US, where there are a few hand-picked merchants providing everything one needs in a single stop. They have CR-King, David's Salon, California Nails, Cebuana Lhuillier, Japan Home Centre, Handyman, Robinsons Appliances, OMF Literature Bookshop and Western Union as the more familiar shops. They also have small ones that have interesting items such as Too Nice, Runway, Red Carpet Shoes, Jazz House of Gifts, Go Ape Boutique, Golden 3 Pet Supplies, Funky Plum, Dainty Bold Accessories, Little Town School and Office Supply and Cosmetics Korea. They have several beauty places aside from David's such as Glam Salon, Lash Stuidio, Luna Dermatologica, Nature's Cradle Spa, Taylor Tyler Salon and Robots & Dolls Kids Salon. They also have a lot of food choices for the hungry shopper including: Big Better Burger, Bon Chon, Café France, Fat Melts, Ichnigo, Jin's Kimbab, King Katsu, Reyes BBQ, Kopiroti, Sophia's Mediterranean Cuisine and Yellow. They have a few kiosk in the open air area such as Zagu, Waffle Time Takoyaking, Pongalapong Bibingka, Potato Corner, Pink Cub Scrambles, Nacho King, Miggy Wiggy Ice Cream, Master Siomai, Inikot Kanin, Fruitas, Don' Original Spanish Churros and Empanada Mas. In the open area, they have a children's play center which has foam tiles and Little Tykes play houses and slides. Our kids love playing there - it pretty safe and clean. This is a great way to relax and cool off after finishing you BF Ruins shopping. Plus there are great deals there, too. I found a children's shoes in Japan Home Center for 2 pairs at P88!

BF Homes is a neighborhood abundant with all sorts of businesses (mostly restaurants, bars, and everything Korean), and being a ginormous subdivision, it makes sense that there should be some sort of mall here. Though, Pergola Mall is quite small to be called a "mall". It's mostly Robinson's Supermarket, a food court (with free wi-fi) upstairs, Handyman, some restaurants and a few salons and stores. And, it is worth mentioning that there is a Japan Home Centre here, which is always(!) a good thing. It's a very laid back place to spend a lazy afternoon, or get some errands done. You've got toddlers? There's a tiny playground in the middle, and some benches. You can also bring your pooch. They've also got some zumba/other physical type of exercise on the 2nd floor activity area as well if you're into that. Good food places here include Sophia's, a Mediterranean restaurant.. well actually that's probably about it that's worth mentioning. For cafes, there's a Kopi Roti and a Cafe France. This place has seen better days, and businesses do come and go. But its always been an OK place to grab some groceries, get some quick school supplies (at Little Town) and maybe a quick coffee or two. Or... you know, leech onto their free-wifi like those people who hang out at the 2nd floor food court.

I love any store or restaurant whose owner has a sense of humor, even the naughty ones…read more Itlog ni Kuya along Dona Soledad Avenue in Bicutan, Paranaque City is one such place. I ask you, how would you translate its name, Big Brother's Eggs? Anyway, as its name suggests, Itlog ni Kuya's specialty is eggs, eggs and more eggs. It has very affordable "silog" meals like the classic tapsilog for P50. That's tapa, sinangag and itlog. If you don't care for tapa, there's also hotdog, tocino, longganisa and bangus to go with the fried rice and fried egg. For those with a very tight budget, a humble repast of kalog for only P25. That's short for kape and itlog, of course. That's coffee and egg for those who don't understand Tagalog. Their meal with the most borderline obscene name is pakaplog, which stands for pan de sal, kape and itlog which goes for P35. Pakaplog translates vaguely to "May I fondle you?" and you can see why a lot of folks aren't too happy when their kids see the item on the menu. A favourite among a lot of Filipinos is red egg, or itlog na maalat, and Itlog ni Kuya has this specialty, too. They also have balut as well as penoy, so those who crave the unhatched duck eggs can have their fix anytime of day, courtesy of Kuya. Since itlog na maalat, balut and penoy all come from ducks, the place recently included its Filipino version of Peking duck, calling theirs Pekin Kinulob. I'm not sure if I want to try this out, but the various silog meals are regular treats that I can go for anytime.
