We stopped at Mr. Hamburger in Huntsville, TX on our way to North Texas for our son's band camp. It had been a few years since our last visit, but I remembered great burgers and fries and convinced my wife and younger son to stop. Unfortunately, things have changed. The burger I had wasn't bad, just average--and on the small side. I tried one with habanero jam, which was interesting but didn't elevate it beyond "just okay." The fries were clearly frozen and lacked flavor or character. The ranch dip, which I used to love, wasn't very good either. Honestly, my favorite part of the meal was the unsweet iced tea. Service was friendly, and we arrived before the lunch rush with plenty of parking available (more around the back). The menu has definitely changed since our last visit. I remember massive burgers like the King Kong and excellent natural-cut fries. Sadly, that experience didn't carry over this time. I still like supporting local, but based on this visit, three stars out of five feels generous. The last picture I posted here (on a previous visit) was what the burgers and fries used to look like. we ordered 2 burgers, fries, onion rings and a brisket fries. the burgers were ok but bland and lacked any spices. The fries were the best thing there. the onion rings lacked any flavor at all (tasted like they were fried in flour) and the batter was falling off. The brisket fries did not have the onions they were advertised with but did have a fair amount of brisket(which was very fatty and chewy. Also for $3.95 the French fries and onion rings were way over priced for the portion. They also forgot to give us our fries and had we not checked our bag we would've had to come back. Small town burger joint. A greasy burger with greasy fries. It's where the town goes to hang out and get a meal. Would I come back ... nope. But if I lived here ... No worries. On a cooking show that I love is "Sam the cooking guy". A phrase he uses a lot is "fat is favor". When it comes to burgers lean dry meat is absolutely the worst. But something that comes through really strong here is the "sense of community". Come as you are, bring your family and friends. It's truly a focus point in town. This place serves the best hamburgers in Huntsville. I recommend both drive through and the restaurant. The service is friendly and patient. The restaurant decor is historic and family oriented. If you want cheese on your burger you have to ask for it. Also there are no longer double hamburgers and you have to order a second patty. If you eat a double hamburger or cheese burger from Mr. Hamburger you can ask for grilled onions and man it's great. Pro tip. I ordered at the drive thru a #8 and small (12oz) chocolate peanut butter shake. #8 is the "Ol Sarge" and is supposed to come with blue cheese. I didn't taste any blue cheese and didn't feel like deconstructing the burger. It did taste great though. Mr. Hamburger is a tucked away, hole in the wall type of place. The restaurant has been around since since 1959. It is an old fashion hamburger and milkshake type of diner. Upon first glance you may have your doubts. I did. I wasn't too sure about the place when we pulled up, but I am glad we stopped. The food was really good. The service was great. After ordering at the counter, they delivered our food to our table. The fries are thin, and hand-cut. Very tasty. The food was made to order, but the wait was not that bad. They have their unique "Boots" fountain drinks. Even though we dined in, they also have a drive-thru, and a park and eat area outside. When it is a beautiful weekend, we love to put the top down on the car and just drive to the country. We started looking for a good burger place and stumbled upon this cute little joint. Mr Hamburger . This business was established in 1959 and the inside has all kinds of newspaper clippings on the wall from that time. Prices are reasonable snd the burgers were so good! Also got a malt. I don't know if you like malts, but these were exceptional. Lots of malt in them. If we're ever back in Huntsville we are definitely coming back to this cute little place. read more
