I hired Mr Bookcases to make me some custom bookcases.
In a lot of ways they were great -- I could've been on here writing a rave review, but the problems were *big* problems, made all the worse for how unnecessary they were.
I supplied the length of the wall the bookcases were to go on, specified that I wanted them to be 4cm longer to overlap the doorframe, and to be a bit too long so that they could be cut exactly to size when installed. The proprietor/cabinetmaker seemed really nice, photocopied my notes (without adding any of his own), the price was good...
But he didn't make them himself, and he didn't pass the job on straight way... and somewhere in all of that "add 4cm for the doorframe" must've turned into "cut out 4cm for the doorframe". When we (finally) found someone to install the shelves for us, they discovered that they were all too short for the wall. The proprietor/cabinetmaker came out to look at it, and very grudgingly agreed to "fix" it -- not because they'd made an error, but because "I've discovered in the past that it's not worth arguing with customers". The "fix" involved glueing an extra slice to the end... but because the shelves themselves have a bit of warp in them, the "patch" doesn't really match up.
The shelves don't sit flat on their supports, anyway, there are visible gaps because parts that should sit flush just don't. There are also large visible tool marks under the stain and varnish they applied as part of the job.
So attention to detail obviously not fabulous, but all of which I would have been willing to accept as part of the run-of-the-mill imperfection of the universe, you get what you pay for, etc....
But when I phoned to chase up the stained dowels that were supposed to have been supplied to cover the (enormous) screw holes, they were not only extremely rude, and didn't just try to charge me extra, but they also said that they believed the shelves were the right size when they delivered them, and that I'd cut them down myself and then tried to rip them off to fix it! How I'd accomplish this with no tools and a newborn to care for, or why I'd do it, remains a mystery. Apparently "the boys out the back said there was tool marks on the end" -- but there were big tool marks under the stain and varnish they applied before they were delivered! Wouldn't it be more likely that's where they came from?
Talk about adding insult to injury.
I was speechless with shock, and needless to say have been left to sort out my own dowels.
Short version: the quality's a bit bodgy, but good for the price which (assuming everything goes okay) is quite reasonable... but heaven help you if they stuff something up, because they won't accept responsibility for it, and will be hostile and sloppy about "fixing" it while trying to blame you for their mistakes.
A potentially good experience gone terribly sour due to poor quality and service. read more
