Over the years my parents have graduated from summertime campers to retired permanent residents of Matapouri Bay, and the Matapouri Store has kind of grown up with us. The owners are happy to have mail and packages sent to them for those without mail boxes *cough* my parents *cough*, and during the summer it's absolutely bustling with activity. Ice cream, fish and chips, milkshakes... when I think of what makes a good kiwi summer, this is what pops into my head. A piece of advice - do your big shopping trip in Whangarei and don't rely on the shop for your basics. Granted, they do have an excellent selection of basics (perfect for a little cheeky baking), but you'll be paying a premium for finding them so close to home. You'll also find lots of fresh dairy and occasionally local fruits and veggies. This Matapouri store just seems to improve itself every year. I imagine it's the kind of place I'll be taking my own kids one day :)

Fish is fresh and beautifully prepared. Chicken Karaage is light and crispy. The tofu app is possibly the best tofu I've had, anywhere - and I have had a lot in a lot of places including Japan. These guys are really doing things right. If you are in Whangarei and have a hankering for Japanese I couldn't recommend the place more. Previous review: I love sushi and sashimi. In fact I love Japanese food in general. I'm use to being let down at "Japanese" restaurants in New Zealand. This place didn't let me down. It's spot on. I did not ask for flavoured tea and I would of assumed that the default option would of been plain tea. The roast veges were almost non-existant, but the mashed potato, carrots and broccoli were beautiful. The ice-cream sundaes were nice, the sauces were yummy but they used french vanilla ice-cream and not vanilla, although to their credit it did say french vanilla on the menu. Value for money though and worth the $32 paid.
