I found out that it was not wise to use Black's Moving and Storage in NC. They had a great website…read morewhen I hired them - which no longer exists. It bragged of experience with full packing for long distance, pianos, antiques, collectibles, estates, etc. I have had 6 professional moves in the past 30+ years, and this was the scariest. This was a long-distance move (NC to NY) involving 2 months of storage. Despite a referral from the people buying the house I moved out of, I was not pleased with them in the end. The only thing I have good to say is that they were kind and friendly; and I let that impact my decision to cancel another company to use Black's. The first company offered $2000 off the price of my move to get me to stick with them. I should have gone with it. Not only did Black's end up more expensive, the final price was over $1500 higher than the original estimate. This was not just due to higher gas prices. They underestimated the miles from their warehouse to Albany at 700 (I thought it should have been over 800) and the actual address I moved to turned out to be 153 miles more. I got no copy of the "high full value" insurance policy I paid extra for. They took an inventory of only some of my antiques and high value items and I received no copy of that inventory stating the original condition. There were some items that were not even properly packed before leaving my house, and I was told this would be done before my goods left their warehouse for delivery. It was not. I had already packed half of my boxes myself. My mattresses and grandfather clock were supposed to get cartons, and they cancelled those and wrapped them in bags/cardboard. The only things packed well were kitchen items and wardrobes. I had to tell them they missed packing many items; and they missed some drawers and cabinets - which I had to pack myself and make them come back for. I learned a lesson not to use an estimate based on weight instead of truck sq. ft. used. They estimated the weight at 4500 lbs. and then refused to weigh the shipment for delivery saying it would likely weigh more than 4500 lbs. and I would have to pay more (so?). They changed my delivery date 3 times, and they were in a big hurry to get out of here. I had to ask them to unwrap my grandfather clock so I could see the condition! Some of my collectibles and furniture were not packed well. I had some damage to a few items when goods arrived - fortunately minor - and I received no response from them when I sent an email and pictures of the damage. I have been able to repair some of the damage myself, but never received the requested claim to report the damage for any insurance payback. There was no inventory anyway for proof. They left a moving blanket and a cinder block (used to hold the front door) behind. There was wall damage in a newly painted apartment from them banging things. Very stressful move. Use them at your own risk - I did.
