I consider myself a fortunate person in that my friendships with a diverse array of people expose me to an equally diverse array of activities and venues I otherwise wouldn't have ventured to. That said, on some summer evenings when others are bar hopping, I get to tag along and visit galleries.
Mountain Fold Gallery showcases a variety of art: photography exhibits, sculpture, paintings, video installations, performances, etc. What I liked about this place is that you wouldn't find these pieces in traditional (read: boring) venues, as Mountain Fold supports emerging and underground artists.
This venue is run by the most adorable and down-to-earth young couple, allowing for suspension of any pretentiousness. The visitors usually range from the requisite androgynous hipsters, esteemed professors, independent artists, buyers, and a cohort of really WEIRD people.
Like I said, this is NYC, and there are pockets of subcultures in every nook and cranny. Well, when I was here, I got to witness a group of gallery crashers who disband upon entering a gallery, pretending they don't know each other, and all they do is drink the complementary champagne and wine, like fishes. One of them shook my hand and held it for all of 5 minutes. It was weird. He was drunk. When we left, we noticed that they gathered together again to talk about booze. My friend snapped a picture.
Notwithstanding the weird people, this is a really great outlet for creativity and culture. read more
