Whites Landing tents are operated by Catalina Mountain & Sea and offer Airbnb tent options ... we went in August 2022 after their regular summer science camp season was over. The place is basically 1-star because they can offer rustic toilet and shower buildings (rather than an outhouse or a dug latrine) but not much else. The MASH style tent was fine and the private Whites Landing beach site is awesome. Food is expensive for what you get (but no other food options nearby), no shower curtains, toilets limited (or clogged as during our weekend stay). We had such High Hopes for this trip to Catalina with our Adventure Guides. As a group we've camped all over Southern California in all different types of facilities, many times in our tents without any issue. This Whites Landing location itself has undeniable beauty peacefulness and tranquility. Where the camp fell short is in acceptable life health and safety issues. Complete with a lack of leadership. One main issue was the dock. It seemed like a cross anchor was loose and the what is shifting upon our arrival. This itself didn't cause any issue luckily. The bowline for the ship stretches all the way to the beach and is under enormous pressure and just is waiting for snap and slingshot into someones head. Also one of the support lines for the dock was broke and left the entire dock in my opinion unsafe as it shifted wildly during boarding and navigating the gangway which was elevated a few feet off the dock. The "Mash" style tents were fine for our group, but the bunk beds didn't have a top safety bar on the exterior and my child rolled off the bed from a 5-6' drop on to hard wood floor. I mentioned this to the group to only discover it happened to two others within our group that night. The plumbing and boys bath houses should be condemned and reconstructed. They knew they had issued when the did their introduction meeting with our group, but the restrooms stopped working the first night. Leaving the group scrambling to find relief. It left raw sewage running out of the facilities in which we needed to open air shower within. They also side market parts of the facility to Airbnb as a eco tourism location. This poor bachelor party that booked the facility was asked to help serve dinner for a group of 200+ children and dads. Not cool. During our groups time to "help out" the staff serving staff disappeared during cleaning duties. Leaving me to scramble three different times dads to help clean up. I left my 10y/o child in the dark at the "dads and sons" campfire without me. Just when I was about to leave I was asked to operate the main industrial dishwasher by myself with no working knowledge. When I grabbed the camp director to help, he said "he's never used this machine before!" What! You're asking a camp volunteer and staff to work an industrial dishwasher without any working knowledge yourself! Shameful. The staff was young and green for hired positions, many lacking communication skills and common sense. If they are this unprofessional on land, I would hate to find out what their boat looks like on the education and sea experiences. My children will not be attending anything this group is a running. Facilities are run down with multiple toilets out of order and multiple shower heads capped off, rusty appliances sitting out in front of the restrooms, and tents are kind of dingy. Staff was tough to deal with. We also watched some folks inappropriately tie up an aluminum boat at the end of the pier (which is for inflatable boats only, based on the posted sign) which proceeded to sink at the dock. After salvaging the boat they got it to the beach where they proceeded to sink a SUV into the sand while trying to drag it up the beach, then the tide came in and the rescued boat started to float away and had to be saved by someone else... Too expensive for what it is and the demonstrated level of knowledge around the water. read more

Reading the three earlier reviews I had to laugh. Everything has to be shipped from the mainland and that isn't cheap. This is a boy and girls scout camp converted to a rustic camping site. The water comes from a metal tank installed on a hill behind the camp, just like everywhere else on Catalina. Welcome to rural living. It is beautiful, isolated, has excellent for hiking, and one of the most perfect bays for water sports on the island. Great kids camp converted to a rustic, isolated camp, with hiking, camping, and a full range of ocean activities. Scuba trips, snorkeling, sup, kayaking, sailing, and fishing. A variety of accommodations are available, from surplus army tents for large 20 person groups, to 8 person tents, down to individual two bed tents all on raised wooden platforms with beds and camping mattress. For people who want something a little less rugged there are individual beach shacks available maybe 8 foot by ten foot right by the sandy beach. Now you need to set your expectations this place is rustic. The showers have clean hot water but they're open to the sky, the shower floor is concrete, the toilets all have roofs, but it isn't the Ritz. Kitchen available, space in fridge and freezer if you want to bring in your own supplies. Basic camp food, burgers, hot dogs available. Good solid breakfasts, cereal, Bagels, toast, hard boiled eggs, camping food, this is a camp site. The site from the beach, all the way up into the hills is incredible. After 4 months in covid lockdown it was nice to come to a place with so few people you only wear a mask when you enter a building or if you are in the mess hall/kitchen getting food. No Wifi, at all. Verizon cell service works well, I spent most of the week working from my new office hammock. Yes, there are bison here. Well worth a visit to either get away or to bring your family to a very secluded, campground with hiking and crystal clear water. They do offer educational camping for kids, while I was here there was a group of about 10 teenagers getting their dive certifications. The staff is fantastic, knowledgeable, well rounded group of men and women that know the area and take great care of both the guests and the campers. Plenty of room so you aren't bothered by the campers. Can't wait to come back, swam and hiked every day I was here. read more

This camp should be avoided until major operational improvements are made. The facilities are antiquated, dilapidated, dirty and decrepit. The food was barely edible, and generally bad. The drinking water was nasty, barely drinkable, and the resulting widespread under-hydration of campers and chaperones was evident. Meanwhile, the staff drink from other water sources, not available to guests. They would apparently prefer that you purchase drinks and supplemental food from their "camp store," which charges movie-theater-concession prices for junk food: candy, chips, popcorn and sodas. The diving equipment was heavily used, mostly in poor condition, and clearly inadequate for the number of guests. The result was kids going on their first ocean snorkeling experiences with mostly ill-fitting wetsuits, many of which had serious seam failures and significant holes. The masks and snorkels were not sanitized between the multiple users each day, they were just dipped into the same muddy freshwater rinse tubs where dozens of wetsuits were also rinsed in-between check-outs. All of the kayak paddles were broken. While there were several good staff members, overall the staff was significantly under-qualified for leading outdoor education. Ratios of staff to campers were dangerously low for many of the activities, such as a night-hike with over 50 campers from multiple school groups and a single indifferent staff member with no clue about how the guests were faring, or a chaotic night snorkel with a single instructor in the water leading over a dozen kids, along with one or two untrained parent chaperones. read more

My daughter's class was scheduled for camp in April of 2020 and of course the trip was cancelled due to Covid-19. We paid fully in advance. We were given no refund of our money so I (and every other parent) am out $400. I could understand a partial non-refundable amount but to keep the entire payment... That's $400 per kid at I'm guessing about 60-70 kids. I think it's horrible business to take advantage of people during a pandemic. I was unemployed for 8 months during that time so it's not as if I couldn't have used that cash. read more

Wow... so much money for such a crappy field trip... I don't think they are prepared or equipped to have so many kids. The food was disgusting, everything is over priced. My daughter had her backpack stolen by another group in the island and they wouldn't allow me to look for it, and they didn't do anything either. It was the lunch and water bottle and snacks for 3 people :( So we bought cup o'noodles and water and souvenir cups for about $60. I thought it was expensive because this not an amusement park, it's a camp... Rooms are dirty, eating areas are dirty, bee infestation... Nothing good but a couple of counselors... read more
