Amazing family camp! We brought our three teen children for the first time last summer and it was truly unforgettable. My husband attended Campus by the Sea family camp as a child and wanted his children to have the same experience. We plan on going again this summer and are bringing his parents with us! If you want to create memories with your children that will last and lifetime and build a legacy of godliness that will continue to your grandchildren, the I highly recommend registering for Campus by the Sea!

UPDATE as of OCT. 2019 Updated details are quoted corrections as requested by the business owner and they're details to better help anyone else planning an excursion. --Transportation is not provided by Catalina Express - it is a research vessel operated by the Long Beach Marine Institute. That's why your voyage was a little rougher. But LBMI's vessel, "Challenger," does have touch tanks on board for the kids to examine sea life sampled from the ocean's floor. Weather may have been too rough to allow this for your group. --In-house we refer to OTS as "Opportunity To Serve" --CBS is just the host facility for The Long Beach Marine Institute which provided your transportation to the camp and all the instructional and supervision elements of your experience. Campus by the Sea provided the meals, lodging, care for facilities and snack shop. *Readers might want to know that they initiate the Long Beach Marine Institute to line up a similar event. https://www.yelp.com/biz/long-beach-marine-institute-long-beach ----------------------------------- INITIAL REVIEW MAY 2019 Advice for future Catalina campers if you visit here in May: TAKE DRAMAMINE/ Motion Sickness Medicine if needed. Our boat ride to the island was VERY choppy and wet!!! Waves sprayed on the top deck. DRESS IN WARM & COMFORTABLE LAYERS When it got windy and cloudy it was pretty COLD BRING A WARM SLEEPING BAG BRING WATER SHOES (rocky beach) BRING EXTRA SOCKS & Clothes (at least 2-3 extra outfits) PUT YOUR NAMES ON EVERYTHING (Sooo much was left behind on the cabin floors, the ground, shower stalls, pj's dropped on the way to the showers, etc. BRING A RELIABLE FLASHLIGHT!!! No lights at night. They ran out of lanterns. ALSO a good idea to have shower items in easy to carry bag and another bag to keep clothes dry once in the restroom/shower. BRING BUG SPRAY/LOTION/CHAPSTICK (very dry air) SNACK BAR HRS after meals or during free play. Snack shop had chips, candy, ice cream, souvenirs, sweatshirts, hats, flip flops NO CELL PHONES We had lost phones (in the water)&chargers, so to avoid losing them don't bring them. Kids have a phone within reach, at their use at any time during the day and there was plenty of downtime to make calls home. WATERPROOF cameras advised or have one of those clear pouches attached to a necklace so kids can keep their hands free while they're exploring. STAFF are first-aid-trained. They ring a bell to cue the next activity. They may or may not give the kids a heads up, so they should just always be ready for the activity coming up. I'm sure each camper's experience is different, but here is the gist of our 3- day 7th Grader Itinerary with about 120 middle school kids and our chaperones. EACH DAY's DETAILS ARE NOTED IN MY INITIAL REVIEW FEOM MAY 2019

A place to rejuvenate and be spiritually fed. I've been coming her on and off since 1996 and have enjoyed every moment. I have fond memories of this place.

The room was large with a comfortable bed, mini-refrigerator, and table. The dressing area was outside the bathroom and spacious. The provided breakfast consisted of parties, bread, jams, cereals, and oatmeal, as well as coffee and tea. It was sufficient for us. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Our room rate was higher than we usually spend, but we were celebrating my daughter's birthday, so we splurged. They provided a bottle of champagne to wish her happy birthday.

Our room offered a nice balcony with views of the bay. The bed was comfortable and cozy. The bathroom was large. We had cups and a coffee maker along with a mini fridge, so it was everything we needed for our two night stay. They offer a continental breakfast each morning out on the patio, which is a peaceful spot to just sit, enjoy the firepit, and koi pond. Or the roof deck is awesome with a BBQ, tables and chairs and stunning views. They also offer trays so you can take your breakfast back to your room and have breakfast in bed. Spoiled! The staff couldn't have been more helpful, friendly and accommodating. Evelyn was awesome, thank you for the smiles and truly wonderful service throughout our stay. Off the boat, we went to drop our luggage to store until check-in. Fortunately we were there during the week, and our room was ready earlier, so we chilled a bit before heading out to explore and have lunch. They also held our bags upon check out. After we returned from an adventure, they allowed us to sit on the patio and enjoy the sun before we had to be at our boat. We couldn't have asked for a better stay, and we will absolutely go back. Just a note for anyone who has mobility issues. The hotel is awesome, but note that you have to walk part way up a little hill to reach the stairs to the small lobby. There are stairs to the lobby and depending on which floor your room is located, there is no elevator, just stairs. For someone in a wheelchair or needing a walker and unable to climb stairs, it is not doable.

All boats to and from Catalina Island were cancelled on 2 days of my visit, forcing other guests to change their travel plans. I ended up being the sole guest for all 3 nights of my stay here! With some whispers of Mt Ada being haunted (but not as many as Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors), I was a bit concerned, but fortunately had no paranormal experiences. To briefly review Mt Ada's history, it was once the Catalina home of William Wrigley Jr. and family, of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs fame. He was instrumental in putting Catalina "on the map", and his descendants still own the Catalina Island Company, which runs Mt Ada, Hotel Atwater, Pavilion Hotel and Banning House Lodge, as well as other businesses. All my stays at Mt Ada have been with the Company, although it was previously run as a private B&B. Mt Ada still runs as a B&B, as opposed to a hotel. It's a pricey stay but has many many perks that justify the expense. These include transportation to and from the boat or helicopter terminals, use of a golf cart throughout your stay, daily made-to-order breakfast and lunch, pre-breakfast continental breakfast, afternoon wine/cheese/charcuterie, 24-hour butler's pantry with snacks like gelato, chips, cookies and popcorn plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, discounts on Island Company tours and activities. Currently there are about 4 main people interacting with guests at Mt Ada, plus "behind the scenes" kitchen and housekeeping staff. My past reviews have mentioned a stay here is more like a visit to a home, as opposed to a hotel. There will be times when you may not see any staff (especially at night). But Pierre, Liz, Tim and Yoli (Yollie?) work their hardest to accommodate guest needs--they are the chauffeurs, front desk, waiters, luggage handlers, concierges, etc. I applaud them all. One of Mt Ada's pluses is its location on the hill (Mt Ada) above Avalon Bay, even above the main Bay viewpoint that all the rental golfcarts stop at (traffic jams are common here). It's quite peaceful, although in busy times the noise from "downtown" does carry uphill. Mt Ada has 6 rooms. The room I booked was the Grand Suite, Mr. Wrigley's former bedroom. It's the largest room, with a separate living and bedroom, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub, and a large terrace above the first floor terrace. It has a fireplace, as do 3 other rooms, and a raised bed that requires stairs to access, as does one other room. The living room has an antique "radio" that is seen in photos with Mr. Wrigley. There are radio stations hand-written on it; I was appalled to see "graffiti" defacing this historic relic. The terrace is fabulous, but alas the weather prohibited much use; I feared the high winds would blow the cushions on the chaise lounges over the railing. Even the dining tables on the first floor terrace were stored; in more temperate weather it's the loveliest place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. The breakfast and lunch menus have some new items and some old faves. Once again a fabulous and peaceful stay. Thanks again to all the staff. With the Pavilion Hotel reopening soon, Mt Ada may be the next property to undergo renovations. I hope it does not lose its charm or homey character.

We wanted the same experience and the same room. We got a Studio Suite room in the back of the hotel in the upper private area. The last time we stayed here, our room seemed bigger, and I was a bit disappointed about how small the room seemed compared to last time, but we ended up really enjoying our stay. The room was clean, although housekeeping did not clean our room the first time we asked the front desk. Before our third and final night, we went up to the front desk and told them we were extremely upset our room was not clean the day before when we had asked them to clean it so they promptly came up and cleaned our room. The linens were clean, white, and fresh and the robe was nice though short. The towels were comfy and clean and they gave us more towels when our room wasn't clean the second night we stayed after we asked them. The outside the patio was amazing. We had a gorgeous view of the city behind us and the ocean in front of us. We loved to sit outside in the comfy chairs and just soak up the view and drink coffee/tea that was provided for us with a Kuerig machine. We had plenty of free water bottles and ice and kept asking for more and more because we drink like fish and they gave it to us all for free. The room had a couch and a little table, but the table was too short for my husband to use his laptop. He said he would have liked a bigger table, but we made do with what we had. Also, there were no nightstands in the room and the closet space was very, very small, just a small wooden box in the room with only enough space to hang our jackets. There were no real drawers to place our clothes in so we left them in the luggage the entire time. The bathroom was made of beautiful Italian marble with a large bathtub that we filled to the top with warm water for our nightly bath soaks. The only thing we didn't like about the bathroom was that the toilet was right next to the wall, giving us little room to sit and do our business and the sink had no area around it to place our bathroom essentials except for a really, really small glass area above the sink to place our toothbrushes. We took really long naps while we were there with the air conditioner on full blast and really loved our bed. It was sooooo comfortable. Also, our room had a refrigerator where we placed food we bought from the market and left over food from the restaurant. We are definitely coming back again to the Bellanca hotel for a simlar Studio Suite room, hopefully next time, a bigger one light last time, but even though there were things we didn't like about this room, we may request the same room again because the view outside looking towards the ocean was amazing. Oh, and the hotel gave us two free drink vouchers worth $15 each for mixed drinks at the Naughty Fox which we used and enjoyed.

I exited the tender and walked along the waterfront where I passed a few children's playgrounds with a pirate theme. Then on to where the golf carts are rented. I walked to the pier (Green Pier) where there are bathrooms and many small shops all hoping for the tourist business. They carry the typical port souvenirs. After a long walk on this short pier I got to the end where there is many people fishing with poles and the little set ups they will sell you for a few dollars and the bait too. There are plenty of benches to sit and watch the boat come in and out of the harbour. There is a small beach area that has lots of pretty colored little rocks along the shoreline. The walk to the round Casino Building is pretty much the end of the road before a mountainside resort. I passed by some waterfront restaurants that were even crowded on a cloudy day. Our family and friends live here so they have a real car to take us to interiors. Yes you will need a real car to do that! Avalon has enough restaurants and bars to hang out. Casino is also a movie theater to show older movies on certain weekend evenings. They offer tours of this historic casino too. They host NYE gala every year. Beach club is great for summer times. Last year, Vista and Snug were under the same ownership, which is no longer the case. Snug now has closer affiliation with Hotel Aurora a bit up the hill. Snug is a cozy and charming 6-room inn. There is staff on duty during the day; welcome in-room wine and snacks are provided as well as daily continental breakfast. There is no staff on the premises at night, although someone is on-call. My stay was lovely and somewhat surreal. I visited during the February rains which caused the cancellation of all Catalina Express boats on 2 days during my Avalon visit. This forced guests here for the long Valentines/Presidents Day weekend to leave early or relocate. I ended up being the sole guest for my 2-night visit! And with minimal visitors on the island, evenings were also pretty quiet, despite being right above the main drag (Crescent). Snug does provide earplugs and eye masks if needed. I moved up my arrival date due to the weather and Snug was able to accommodate me, even offering the same room, which was the Santa Catalina room, the inn's "crown jewel" situated on the corner with two large bay windows, one facing Avalon Bay with Casino, Bay and pier views, the other with a built-in window seat facing Sumner and the hills above. All rooms have a fireplace and deep soaking jetted tub. The rooms are not particularly large but are full of charm, coziness and warmth. No robes or slippers, but there were 2 clock/music/alarm machines. Complimentary reusable water bottles are provided; there's a water/ice machine in the hall. The welcome snacks offered were olives, pretzels and high-end nuts (i.e., no peanuts). The continental breakfast was quite ample and includes a small loaf of warm banana bread, yogurt, fresh berries, granola, milk, juice and coffee or tea. You fill out an order slip as to what you want exactly and what time you want it delivered. There are 6 delivery times for the 6 rooms, which of course was not an issue for my stay. There is a common room with a sofa, fireplace and machine for coffee and tea. There is a closet for luggage storage, a public restroom and umbrellas. The front door is open 8-5, key access is needed in the off-hours. Shout-outs to the great staff I met--Jackie, Destiny and especially Johnny at the front desk and housekeeper/breakfast preparer Alicia. Overall a fabulous stay. Also one of the most expensive. But here's the thing, most of the other places on Catalina required a two night minimum. So technically more per night it worked out perfectly for us because we didn't have the time to commit to three days on the island. I've stayed in hotels all over the world, and the room didn't have physical problems like almost 100% of other stays. By "physical problems", I mean: something dirty, something broken/damaged, or in need of updating. I can attest to what other Yelpers are saying, the amenities are lacking. There is an unheated pool, and that's about it. If there was a hot tub overlooking the bay that would have been rad. I might have been disappointed in the amenities if we were just going to be be hotel-bodies. But Catalina beckons you to be outside. The golf cart shuttle was a great touch. We were picked up after getting off the Catalina Flier, and driven over to the Zane Grey. Our room was already available so we got to check in early. The the day we left the Flier wasn't leaving until 4:30pm, but they let us leave our bags at the hotel and then brought them to the pier for us. All the staff we encountered were super kind. Complementary breakfast was delicious! Made-to-order omelets & French toast, bacon, potatoes, etc. Nice way to start the day, instead of dropping cash in town for breakfast. While we did have an awesome corner suite with a beautiful view of the harbor, the room itself was worn and the walls were super thin. You could hear every move above and below and all around, so it wasn't the most relaxing stay. Plus, the hotel is next to the big island bell that rings every 15 minutes and is heard all over the island. Finally, neighbors played music at 6:30am in the morning that woke us up. Why are people not considerate these days? The furniture is showing its age. We brought games to play and the little table we used was all beat up. When you take a shower, you can hear the water moving down the tubes and from other bathrooms. Don't put money in their vending machines. I went to get a Diet Coke and there was no refrigeration. The Coke came out warm. What was particularly maddening was there was a worker in the room and he didn't warn me it didn't work. The pool isn't heated. Being May it was still cold, so no one is in it. The note with all the information on it, left in the room seemed kind of harsh. Don't do this and don't do that. It didn't feel welcoming. The pros. Best view! Loved the cool air and balcony views! Free breakfast. It's nothing super fancy but nice not to have to go out to get some. On our last day, they kept our luggage for us and brought it down to the ferry later that day. That was super cool. :) Finally, last bit of info, it's on a hill away from town. Good for the views. To get to town you can call for a golf cart ride or walk. We walked up and down to get our exercise. Overall, it was an okay stay, wouldn't call it luxurious or super friendly.
