Kids were able to play here this morning, it's near the arrival port, across the street from a golf cart rental place. Nice port views with lots of boats. It's a pirate ship design playground with a slide and some climbing stairs.

Cute but very small playground next to the cruise ferry terminal. Not a whole lot of space but the playground is ideal for smaller kids. Due to the fact that it's near where all of the tourists get off the ferry, if you want the playground to yourself, come before lunch time.

Machine Gun Park on Catalina Island in Avalon honors machine guns from World War II. I find it odd…read moreto utilize weapons of war as a City Park, which is why I can only offer 3 YELP STARS here. This park is located behind a golf cart rental and as I was riding my rental bike around the island, I came across Machine Gun Park. It is kind of built up on a hill but there is the standard park features such as picnic tables and a playground for the kiddies. There is also a replica of a machine gun placed around the perimeter front entrance. This weapon is a captured German machine gun that was presented to the city of Avalon by the Catalina Island Post 137 of the American Legion. This patch of green grass is called "City Park" in Avalon but is also colloquially referred to as "Machine Gun Park. " Apparently. the history of this island does include quite a bit of war craft, especially during WW II. A story on KCET.org mentioned the intrigue. "Catalina Island nimbly reinvented itself as a training camp for spies, commandos, merchant marines, Coast Guard recruits, and other uniformed service members. Vacant hotels became barracks. Empty marinas, yacht clubs, and even the Chicago Cubs' spring training ballpark were transformed into simulated wa rzones. Engineered by the Wrigley family, which controlled much of the island, the tactic saved Catalina from economic disaster." When my daughter was younger, my ex and I used to take her to play in this park, when we visited Catalina Island. So it has many fond memories for me.

One day we went to the botanical gardens and the Wrigley Memorial. With the level of membership we have, we saved ourselves the entrance fee to the botanical gardens and memorial and our shuttle up to the gardens was complimentary. If you aren't a member the fees are nominal and it helps the conservancy. John was our driver and he gave some great information and history of the island on our way up and back. We didn't know what to expect from the botanical gardens and we loved it. We walked up to the memorial which was really interesting. There are plaques that explain the history of the memorial to Wrigley. As we walked back down we took all the various trails throughout the garden and some some interesting plants, insects and ended at the little amphitheater where we watched a couple of the films they have on the island and the gardens. I have read that others found the gardens to be boring and they only spent a short time. Everyone is different, and the time you spend is dependent on your interests. We took the 10:15 am shuttle and came back at 11:45 am. We found that to be plenty of time, but not too much time, it worked out well for us. It was fun! We also booked our shuttle up to the Airport in the Sky for a hike and lunch through the conservancy. It was great. Our driver was so friendly and explained so much about Catalina's backcountry.
