The bouldering area was partially set from a recent competition--half was still comp-style problems, and the other half was in the process of being reset. While we didn't get to climb much in that section, the problems we did try were well-set and fun. I especially liked the "tunnel" feature--it's a unique touch that adds a lot of character to the sets in that area. I mean who doesn't like to climb on the ceiling!? The roped climbing area was definitely the highlight of this trip. The walls are impressively tall, and every rope station is equipped with a GriGri+--for any experienced climber you likely grimace, but no issues using the GriGri+'s installed. they all worked as designed and were clearly well cared for. The staff was absolutely amazing. We were helped by a brunette woman at the front desk (I wish I had gotten her name!) who was incredibly welcoming and thorough in showing us around. Although we didn't explore the kids' area this time, it looked like a blast--and we're already planning to come back with our kids soon. This gym has a great vibe, and we're excited to return!

She had so much fun and is already asking to go back. We are talking to all of our friends about it and encouraging them to come with us next time. My daughter's favorite was jumping off the buildings, and I found myself climbing up those walls as quickly as I could. Something I did not think I was going to be able to do. We can't wait to go back.

A day session is $25 but they have a cheaper rate for certain drop in hrs so ask if you have flexibility. There is also a sauna which is lovely. The only downside is that it is very small. I went for bouldering only and it's one large room and that's it. It was fine for 1-2 sessions but if I'm a regular, I'd really want a bigger gym with more routes. That said, any rock climbing gym in the community is always a big big plus for me!

Nightlife in Tahoe? Climbing gym :)…read more I love checking out climbing gyms wherever I go, and I thought Blue Granite was pretty good! Disclaimer: this is only based on my one time experience here. The gym is located a bit of outskirts of town but since I stayed a bit out, it was only 5 mins drive. Super cute building sitting in a forest, small parking lot but I didn't have trouble finding parking. Workers are required to give you a tour of the gym and mine was very friendly and thorough. The gym has little touches here and there to make it special. There is a partner board where people leave their information and names, how cute is that? Also, I enjoyed browsing through the climbing artworks they displayed in the hallway. Lastly, I loved how they up-cycled ropes for bathroom curtains. The route settings are fun! Since the wall space is precious, the settings can be compact. Lots of different colors of holds to identify and read. I'd say the grading is somewhat on the same level of Movement gyms in the bay, so slightly harder than the touchstones. The vibe is chill and friendly, not super packed, kids aren't running around, I personally got tired of the music towards the end though, but that was it. I didn't get to try their yoga/Lyra/Dance classes, but it's so cool they offer those especially Lyra or Aerial classes which you may have to pay $40-$50 for in the Bay Area. Will definitely be back!

I almost died here…read more I was climbing Snake Dike for the first time. At the point where you are supposed to traverse left, off of the dike you've been climbing on pitches 1-3, and onto another one...I didn't. I just kept "riding the dike". This route is called "Snake Dance" and goes at 5.9R. Long story short, the first bolt must've been 90-100 ft above the anchor. I had climbed up 80-90 ft, could see the "first" bolt but was getting pumped out trying to reach it. I started shaking, was filled with terror and then...then I was falling. I was cheese-grattering down the granite slabs, and I was oddly at piece. I remember thinking "well, I had a good run, I guess now I know how it's going to end." I tried to keep my feet in front of me as I was coming up on a ledge. I thought it would be better to break my legs than my FACE. As I neared the ledge my clothes had shredded through down to my skin (it was cold day, wearing a shoftshell probably saved me from even more sever road rash) and the, suddenly, the rope caught! I didn't know what injuries I may have sustained but at least I wasn't going to die. I mean, as long as my belayer held on. And she did, boy did she ever. I had fallen all the way down to the one of the previous anchors. How...convenient. I had my climbing partner hold the rope tight and I swung over to the anchor. I had her rappel down to me and...her hands were very very badly burned from the rope. But, she held on, and she saved my life. We limped out and eventually got to an emergency room. Her hands would have to be in bandages for weeks, but they are all better now. Luckily, I got away with just a cracked rib, bruised heels, and road rash along my arms, thighs, and butt (sorry bro). We came back 6 months later, stayed on-route and had a great time. A summit has never tasted so sweet. The "actual" Snake Dike route is till VERY run-out in places. There are spots where there is only 2 or ever ONE bolt on the entire pitch. But, most of the climbing is in the 5.4 range, so it's not anywhere near as heady as 5.9 slab. (yeah, I'm a punter, 5.9 slab with epic runouts gets me real skeered, especially now...seriously, my hands are sweating all over my keyboard as I type this...) Best part of Snake Dike is that you don't need a permit. I don't expect it will be like this for much longer, get it while it's hot!

I started as an absolute beginner, a…read morevery fearful beginner! and it was comforting to know that I was safe as I learned how to climb. They took care of everything so that I just didn't have to worry about a thing except climbing! As I got more comfortable with climbing, they knew how to progress me to more difficult routes, and how to coach me up more challenging rocks. I wanted (and still want!) the caring eye of seasoned professionals who will teach climbing technique and suggest ways to climb better. And the emotional support and kudos from Chris and Jarad when you do something spectacular makes it all worthwhile. There are guide services who will set up a rope for a new climber, without much concern that you are in unbearable heat, or that it's an exhausting approach... and just let you flounder on the rock. You don't want that. You want the full attention and skill of accomplished and certified professionals who know the area, who can choose appropriate climbs, and who will give you a great day with great memories. And, not a small extra, by the end of the day you will feel that you have made a new climbing friend. They'll remember you when you come back and cheer you on to do your next big thing.

Our family went climbing with Jarad from Vertical Adventures twice: once in Tahoe (Donner Pass) and…read moreonce in Joshua Tree. In both locations we climbed with other guides before, and Jarad clearly stood apart. First, he is very very knowledgable of both areas as he lives in those places for multiple years and is not a seasonal worker. Second: he uses this knowledge to tailor the day for us. He is not shying away from a challenge, and we did a multi-pitch, hard single pitches and fun rappelling routes with him. That the difference I observed with other (highly reviewed) guides. Every guide worth their salt will keep you safe, but few will make it as exciting as Jarad from Vertical Adventures could. Another (more personal) note: Jarad is a steward of the place where he lives and works, and gives back to the climbing community by maintaining existing routes and establishing new ones. It is important for me to support this kind of local business that contributes back to the local society and keeps outdoor climbing spirit going.

When I first walked in, I immediately noticed all of the natural light coming into the room. It really added to the outdoorsy ambiance. The employee at the front desk was super friendly and was quick to get me set up. As for equipment, grabbing shoes was easy (pulled them out of the storage cubes to the left of the front desk), and they provided a harness as well. I'm not sure if the staff normally does the walkthrough on tying a proper knot, since my friend and his friend did it for me. Nonetheless, I do like that they have that area separate from the main climbing area. Helps to take the pressure off a little bit if you're new. There seemed to be dozens of different climbing paths to choose from, with signs at the bottom indicating the level of difficulty. I found that particularly helpful since, as a newbie, everything looked hard. Also, the people I observed and interacted with on the floor were extremely friendly. Really great vibes coming from the community here. The pricing, based on information from my friend, seemed reasonable, since it included the gym and classes. However, I live in Elk Grove, so I probably will stick to visiting this place only now and then. Recommend giving it a try, though!

When we walked in she was nice but our waiver was filled out incorrectly, which was on us for not reading properly but her tone was nasty. She gave us attitude at first but we let it slip since we were wrong. However when we went back with our CORRECT waiver. She started being super rude to my friend who was stuttering a bit. The reason why he was stuttering was because as we gave her our name she kept giving us like looks like we were speaking another language or something. The final straw was when she loudly and rudely cut off my friend just to say " SORRY? I cant understand you." First of all I don't understand why staff cant be patient with new comers. Second my friend was speaking perfectly fine with some minor stuttering, if she cant even handle that the she shouldn't be working. Third, we are minors just trying to have fun so I don't understand why she was acting like the child. Also to clarify one more time, we are new to this so we don't understand some rock climbing terms, when we were asked about the payment and equipment we thought we could buy the whole bundle. As I was about to tell her we wanted the bundle she mentioned something we didn't understand so we asked her what that meant. Instead of explaining she repeated the word again but loudly, like that explains what it is. Instead of being a patient kind person she pushed her tasks to the sweet man who was KIND ENOUGH to explain everything to us, he was patient and understanding when I said sorry that we were confused. The rock climbing experience is fun, but the service was horrible coming from that lady with a bob cut at the front. Never coming here again and would not recommend to anyone tbh. I hope this reaches the boss or workers and I hope you guys become more patient with new customers.
