In April I attended the ESLC for training to become a ESL teacher. For $50 they provide a 2-weekend training at their headquarters in South Salt Lake; complete with heart-string jerking stories of their students, role playing real-life scenarios, creating a lesson plan and a swanky orange tote bag. The staff and mentors are amazing and I completed the program feeling a lot of responsibility in my new teaching role, but well-equipped and with an ample support system. They also encourage you to sit in on a class to get hands-on experience. The staff at ESLC opened my mind to what a impact confidence in language makes. Over the years I've attempted to learn Spanish several times without much success. I've enrolled in…read morecollege and community education classes and tried Rosetta Stone and other apps. Spanish just never made sense to me and being forced to memorize words, conjunctions, and tenses was downright boring. Earlier this year I planned to visit Colombia and hoped to learn more Spanish in preparation for my trip. I wanted to be more conversational during our travels and to be able to get around easier. I knew I wouldn't be able to master Spanish in a few weeks, but I wanted to learn as much as possible to make my trip more enjoyable and fun. I discovered EL KING Language Institute was near my home and called them to learn more about their Spanish classes. They invited me to attend a sample class and I showed up that next week for an evening class with Dr. Thomas Quiroz. He introduced us to the concept of the "one page book", his patented method for learning Spanish and other languages. Honestly, this concept seemed kind of simplistic and gimmicky when I first saw it. But when Dr. Thomas Quiroz started asking us questions in Spanish and we started using the "one page book" to communicate with him, in Spanish, it immediately clicked and made sense. This learning method is honestly a revolutionary approach to learning and it eliminates the drudgery of memorization typically associated with language classes. That evening I enrolled in the EL KING Language Institute Spanish class and began my new journey to learn Spanish! Our Spanish class met twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday for three hours, for 10 weeks. There were five students in the class, including myself, and the classes were fun and engaging. I was honestly surprised by how quickly the three hour classes went by. Dr. Thomas Quiroz is a terrific instructor and his stories and teaching style kept me interested and made the classes fun. Classes focused on the use of the "one page book" and learning the structure of the Spanish language. By understanding how to form sentences in Spanish and by engaging in conversations with each other, we quickly learned how to say many things and that learning came about very naturally. During our Spanish classes, Dr. Thomas Quiroz brought in native Spanish speakers (from their English classes) for us to talk with. We helped them with their English and they helped us with our Spanish! This cross training was very helpful and beneficial to both English and Spanish students. I traveled to Colombia in May, after a few weeks of Spanish classes. I was surprised by how much Spanish I understood and how much I was able to communicate with other people. Had a mastered Spanish in a few short weeks? Certainly not. But in only a few weeks at the EL KING Language Institute, I'd learned more Spanish than in any previous class I'd taken. By understanding the structure of the language with the assistance of the "one page book," I was able to ask and respond to questions, order from a menu, ask for help and directions, and carry on a basic conversation. This very much enriched my travels in Colombia and made by time there much more enjoyable. Dr. Thomas Quiroz is the head of El King and instructed me personally through private lessons. He will provide a good balance of encouragement with your progress while simultaneously reminding you the importance of practice and immersion. It truly is SO important to practice. You don't need to be "Smart" or have some "Gifted" ability to learn. All you have to do is apply yourself and PRACTICE! Dr. Quiroz is easy to converse with and will help build your confidence in speaking Spanish. Another separate thing I really enjoyed about El King is the opportunity you get to speak with the English students that are there. The idea is that you ask questions in Spanish and they answer in English, then vise versa. If Dr. Quiroz asks you if you'd be interested in practicing your Spanish with the English students, say yes. I was a bit nervous to do so, but it ended up being so much fun. You don't have to worry about saying the wrong words or mispronouncing them, because we are all learning and mistakes are expected. I learned so much in the near 2 weeks that I was there. I would have continued further, but demands at my work made it difficult to go on. I recommend staying with El King for as long as your work and personal life permits. Although my stay was short, El King has given me the confidence to continue practicing on my own through family, friends, and self-study.

**UNSAFE FOR KIDS AND UNETHICAL ADMINISTRATION** We enrolled…read moreour young son in Tender Touch because they offered an affordable after school option and we needed someone who could pick him up from school every day. One day, I received a phone call late in the afternoon from my dad saying that my son was not picked up from school and walked appx. 2 miles from school to their house ALONE. I immediately called Tender Touch to find out what happened, and they seemed to have NO IDEA that my son was even missing for the day. Not only did they fail to pick up my son and ensure his safety, but they did not call me and failed to even realize that he was missing. When they finally acknowledged that he wasn't there with them, they put the blame on my 6 year old for not being at the pickup point. I acknowledged with them that he should have been at the check in point, however, they failed to recognize or notify me as his parent that he was missing at all. As a parent, I was rightfully upset and worried about my son's safety. I asked for reassurance that there was going to be a process in place after this incident that would prevent it from happening again, and simply reassurance that I could trust them to ensure my son's safety every day. Instead, what I got from the staff was retaliation. They were very noticeably upset that I was holding them accountable to keeping my son safe and taking care of him as I was paying for, and so instead of working with me on this reassurance they raised my prices without notice and begin treating my family very differently. While I used to be greeted with a smile and a warm hello every day when I picked up my son, it immediately changed to the cold shoulder approach. As if this wasn't enough, they increased the pricing for days that school was out of session without notifying me. I then received late fees of $50 when I didn't realize that there was a balance left unpaid as a result of the price increase. The explanation I was given was "that they were helping me out with cost before, but now they didn't see a reason to do that". On another occasion, me and two other moms witnessed child abuse from one of the other parents picking up their kid in the parking lot of this facility. We immediately reported it to Tender Touch management, but were given the response that "they were probably just having a bad day", and they would "talk to the parent". I believe they have a legal obligation to ensure that reports of abuse, especially in their parking lot, should be reported in an ethical and legal manner. They never did report it, so we ended up reporting it out of worry for that child's safety. Lastly, due to all of the problems and the feeling of unsafety for my child, we took him out of Tender Touch and moved him to a new facility for after school care. To our knowledge, we were paid in full at that time, but there were charges that we didn't realize were tacked on and unresolved. The Tender Touch management team did not send us a bill, and to our knowledge everything was paid in full. A few months later, rather than receiving a letter, bill or other notification from Tender Touch, we received a collections notice instead, as well as hefty collections fees and late fees. I believe a legitimate business should send a bill or some notification of an unpaid balance, but Tender Touch management didn't follow that process. It seems they were pretty dedicated to putting us in our place for demanding that our kids be taken care appropriately and this was their way of making a statement. I would not recommend this facility to anyone, and believe they should be held accountable for their lack of safety procedures.
