Old seedy and…read morebeautiful Hasbrouck Park has been around for a while. It became a park back in the 1920s and was the first official park in the town of Kingston. The area was used for mining for a long time and when it was mined out ended up with the town. It's a large park of about 45 acres with rolling hills and woods surrounding the open areas. Lot of stuff in this park including basketball courts, softball fields, picnic areas, a large pavilion and great views of the Hudson River, A very cool place but one with an edge. Lots of graffiti on walls and broken bottles scattered around. When we were there I saw a prostitute with a customer as well as several people smoking what I assumed to be illegal substances. An interesting park that has it's own stark beauty but definitely a place I would not want to be at night. The views of the Hudson River from the top of the hill are beautiful but all the graffiti and skanky stuff going isn't. A park that reflects what is beautiful in Kingston and some things that aren't.

It's as close to the…read moremiddle of nowhere as you can get in the Catskills -- it may be a half hour to get to another commercial establishment, and the only reason it was on the way to where we were going was we first decided to go on a more scenic route, and *then* we got lost. And then, poof! There it is! Announced with a National Park-style sign, a themed home-made labor of love based on the legends of Rip van Winkle. It is impossible, simply impossible, to get a more authentic and original and well-situated theme for a course. The holes themselves are homespun -- could use some maintenance and a few cases redesign -- but that is part of the charm. The fact that it's free to play makes it extremely difficult to complain about this aspect of it. The amenities are very relaxed -- a bar, coffee, and a souvenir shop which seemed to be staffed in an irregular rotation -- and I only regret we were there on such a busy day that it was hard to get the attention of any of the staff (staff? owners? auteurs?) I've never been to a mini-golf where you could sit in a chair in the middle of a roaring brook between holes. There's no cell phone service here, near as I can tell, which (a) may account for the low number of reviews, and (b) is a feature, IMHO. You can imagine the sense of isolation and wonder of the old Washington Irving tales from 200 years ago pretty easily without your magical screen functioning. Whatever mad genius thought this place up and keeps it open -- my old school tipped dutch hat is off to you, sir or madam. May you be here forever.

The folks in the pro shop are always welcoming and the food and service in the Greenside clubhouse are great. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone. If you're walking, you'll have a few hills to navigate but the views of northern Schoharie County are worth it.

They offer discounts on certain days to veterans and seniors; I don't remember who else. The rides are included in the admission price, and they offer a weekly pass which is less than an admission for one day at a water park. These small communities do an amazing job. This is a fun fair and one certainly steeped in agriculture traditions. We recently attended for…read morethe first time and enjoyed ourselves, but there were a few quirks we ran across that I will get to later. Depending on your age and when you go, many of the carnival rides are included in your admission which helps justify its $22/person price (for kids over 2... ouch!) It is nice that they don't nickel and dime you over every ride, but that is pretty expensive if you don't want to go on the rides and there isn't any other option. They have lots of areas to watch animals (cows, horses, sheep, chickens, rabbits, etc.) prepare for judging. There are buildings set aside for other interest, such as the model railroad exhibit, the carnival except, and the farm equipment area. Some were locked up when we arrived and we never got to see them all. That was disappointing. Plenty of food was available for sale with all the usual suspects present and even a few new ones that surprised me (pickle pizza? Um, pass). Inexpensive food was also for sale by the local Fire Department for those who wanted to save a few bucks. Many places have similar things at different prices (I saw corn dogs for sale for $5 and $10 each... I wonder what the difference was). Now, a few odd things. The doors open at 9AM and when we got there it was deserted. Literally, we walked through an empty carnival. Past food vendors that were closed, past rides that weren't always securely shut, past buildings that were locked tight. What was going on? It turns out that the rides and food open at 11AM but you can go early for... I dunno. Perhaps they open at 9AM so that the farm animal exhibitors can get an early start on judging. It was very eerie to walk through an abandoned carnival and it reminded me of a Scooby Doo episode. In sum, we had a good time trying out a new fair but I am not sure if we will be back. For those who enjoy the rides and go in the afternoon, you will probably have a blast.
