    Snow near the cross

Free and amazing! Can't say enough good things about this trail. Take the hike up (walk to basin street trailhead one mile from cruise docks) and then hike up. Eat in the restaurant, spend $15, save your receipt and ride the tram down free! It is difficult in some spots simply because it's straight up but everything truly is mind over matter. Lots of places to pull off and sit if you take a break. Still a lot of snow in some parts so we couldn't make it to the cross but you can do the trail from the trailhead to the tramway with no issues in shorts and sneakers as of today 6/2/22. Ps Debbie upstairs in the restaurant is the absolute kindest , sit in her section!

So the sign of slippery steep trails is at the top but we started at the bottom!

I'm gong to write this specifically regarding the access to Mount Roberts Trail from the cruise ship. You walk through town and up some steep neighborhood streets to access Basin road. This walk to Basin road through town and across a bridge is at least one mile. From the start of the trail at Basin road it was another 1/2 mile of fairly steep inclines to get to the "official" start of Mount Roberts Trail going towards the tram. Now it says it's 2.5 miles to the top. Whew...I was already winded from the 1st half mile! Now I haven't exercised in 6 weeks due to a surgery and I'm not an avid hiker. In fact, as we walked across the bridge at Basin road we stopped a local walking her dog to inquire where the trail head starts. Her eyes widened and she immediately says, "are you experienced hikers?" We shrugged our shoulders...sure. She didn't buy it. "Do you have water? Do you have a cell phone? It's very wet and rainy today so it will be very slippery! Be careful!" And so our Alaska adventure commenced. Let's just say that probably only 2 miles from Basin road I was very skeptical that I had started this slippery rainy hike! Tons of switchbacks and yes there are some man made steps to assist but it didn't help a lot. My husband is a more experienced hiker and he called this one "strenuous." We were the only ones out on this rainy day and while the rainforest protected us from most of the rain, I couldn't tell at the top if I was soaked from sweat or from rain....probably a combination of the two. Later we learned that even locals don't hike Mount Roberts on a rainy day like ours. The trail was boggy and extremely slippery. This is not for the faint of heart as there were several places of sheer drops offs where I practically clung to the mossy rocks as I dared not look down. We couldn't even imagine doing this trail from the top going down as it would have been far more dangerous. Better to climb up and take the tram down where it is free with a $10 receipt from either the gift shop or the restaurant. We did see a deer on the hike and I'm relieved to say we did not see a Bear where it is apparently all too common to encounter them!

Typical steep rooty steps the entire hike up the 3mile 1800 feet elevation from Mt. Roberts Trail head to the upper tram area/gift shop

FREE, gorgeous but intense hiking trail. You do need to be athletic to climb up the trail because there are slippery mud in parts. That being said, I was crazy impressed by this woman who was carrying a 3month old baby and hand-holding her 6yo daughter who hiked up this 3mile-1800 feet elevation trail. Gorgeous scenery and very "rooty" steep steps (see my photo of the typical terrain on this trail). No, you don't have to pay $33 to get there (which is what the Tram station in downtown Juneau/Cruise ship might tell you) You do have to walk about 1.5 to 2 miles past downtown Juneau to the start of the Mt. Roberts Trailhead. Then you have to hike approximately 3miles, 1800 feet elevation to reach the top of the tram stop. There is a free nature walk around the top of the tram stop (where the gift shop is). There is another free but intense 1.5mile hike up to the Mt. Roberts peak from the top of the tram area. There were some people who paid $35 to take the Mt. Roberts Tram up and then hiked down (or you can just get back on the tram and ride down). We decided to hike up (and work off our Cruise Buffet Calories) and then took the Mt. Roberts Tram down. Apparently, if you spend $15 per person in the gift shop, you can get a free Tram Ride down, which is what we did. Please ask the Gift Shop at the top of Mt. Roberts to confirm if this deal is still ongoing at the time of your visit. July 2016

The trail is okay but you should have appropriate footwear for the rocks and tree roots and mud.

If you want to turn around here, the easiest way to get back to town is to spend $10 or more and then ride the tram back down.

It was truly one of the coolest and most unforgettable experiences I've ever had with brown bears. I felt completely safe the entire time, and it was absolutely incredible to watch these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Watching them fish was surprisingly fast, sometimes even hilarious! Wild Coast made the whole experience feel both thrilling and respectful to the wildlife. Wild Coast Excursions is the best opportunity to see bears in Juneau and probably Alaska! I cannot wait to go again and check out Pack Creek next time -- already dreaming of it! Don't miss this if you're in Juneau -- it's pure magic.

The day trip was very well-organized from start to finish, with a float-plane ride from Juneau to the island, a short hike to the creek-side bear viewing area, several hours watching bears, a nice boxed lunch and a return plane trip back to Juneau. Having grown up in Juneau, our guide, Peter, is very wilderness-savvy and adept at sharing his knowledge with his clients. He kept our group well-informed and about bear behavior and let us know what to expect from the experience while we were out there and afterwards shared photos and videos of our adventure. Spectacular scenery from the air and on the ground and a fabulous learning opportunity. I highly recommend Wild Coast Excursions!
