It has never been so dramatically unkempt as it has been this past year. I'm embarrassed for the Brooklyn Diocese. My family plot is "Mastrangelo" is always kept up by our immediate family every occasion. We ALL paid for the PERPETUAL CARE which includes cutting of lawn and seeding where necessary. They are concentrated on the perimeter installing new stone foundations, and not existing PERPETUAL CARE pre-paid SPONSORS! My cousin passed away in October 2024. I enclose photos where there is no seeding, just crab grass growing in spots. This is despicable. New plots are being made for more money, we understand. Why should the existing plots be discriminated against. Also anyone who reads this, MERIDIEN Monuments across the street from the cemetery took 8 months for the inscription to be completed. Think twice if you are pre-arranging your funeral arrangements with Mt. St. Mary's and/or MERIDIEN. I have photos to substantiate the above.

But the people who run it aren't like those typical directors who put on dramatic expressions just to make a buck. They are honest, kind, sincere and professional from beginning to end. (Circa 1790 -1810) Colonel Remsen commanded the New York regiment during the Revolutionary War in the Battle of Long Island fighting valiantly with six other Remsen family members who were commanding officers as well. Unfortunately, many of the headstones were stolen or vandalized post war, but during 1980, local American Legion and other civic groups erected a flag pole and made it a New York City landmark. The property is now owned and maintained by the New York Parks Department. As a Son of the American Revolution, I feel honored to have a piece of Revolutionary War so close to home.

It seems unusual to be reviewing a cemetery but this is an unusual little spot in the middle of a…read moresomewhat busy area right off of Woodhaven Boulevard, near the intersection of Trotting Course Lane and Alderton Street. Although I consider myself a history buff of my hometown, Forest Hills, I had no idea this place existed. I lived several blocks from this spot for three years and missed it. This cemetery has been identified as the burial ground for the Remsen family, and dates back to the late 1700s. As noted on the sign, the oldest grave is for Col. Jeromus Remsen who fought on behalf of the the Kings and Queens Militia in the Battle of Long Island in the Revolutionary War, as were several other family members who are buried here as part of a family plot. There are other older stones here but the inscriptions have long since worn away. At some point, a flagpole and two American WWI doughboy statues were added in honor of other veterans. According to one of the signs, the NYDAR and other local American Legion chapters helped maintain the park over the years. It was given NYC landmark status in 1981 and is partially maintained by the city. We saw a volunteer picking up garbage and tending to the garden areas. If you are visiting the Trader Joe's or Home Depot on Metropolitan Ave and are a fan of history, leave your car in the lot and walk two blocks to the Remsen Park.

Dizzy'a grave is apparently unmarked, and that man doesn't want to be found. I'm sure if you spent enough time, or went to the front office, you might find him . . . But I didn't do that. This is just a basic cemetery. No notable graves that I saw besides Armstrong. Unless you're an Armstrong fan, there are more scenic cemeteries in NYC to visit.
