Excellent Catholic liberal arts college, but I'm really just reviewing the campus for it's value to visitors. Beautiful Neo Gothic architecture, the grounds are lovely. Perfect for a leisurely, peaceful stroll, even if campus is in session. They have a very good cafeteria, I love a good cafeteria! read more

Because of the small class sizes it is easy to take a leadership role and make an impact. I am so happy to have graduated from Mt. I truly hope to not get in trouble for writing this review because Mount Mary did place a "Harassment Injunction" against me (but I shouldn't because I haven't contacted nor attempted to contact anyone at/from the college). I attended Mount Mary when the college was named "Mount Mary College". Now it's been changed to "Mount Mary University". I attended from August 2003 to May 2008 (graduated with a good standing, etc.). I went back to pursue a graduate program, not once but twice. When things didn't go right the first time I should've just stopped myself from attempting the second time around. My graduate spell didn't go nowhere near how well my undergraduate spell went; I surged as an undergraduate whereas I failed as a graduate. I loved the studies as a graduate and did all assignments (and on-time) but the things that took place during my time as a graduate is what made me drop-out and ultimately fail. I'm not ashamed either to admit my failures. On one occasion I received a graded paper back from a professor crumbled-up with coffee stains on it, and I'm seriously thinking to myself "I KNOW I didn't turn this in like this!" Other occasions involved a professor's openly-comfortable use of the n-word--yes it was in response to a piece of literature that included the word, but the tone in which she said it was surprising. The final straw was me being harassed by classmates. We all had to write a short story and read it aloud to our fellow classmates. Ok, no problem...until after reading my short story classmates assumed that I was the main character (ok, so I'm totally just going to write a story about myself [sarcasm]) and openly said things like "I don't like her at all", "I just want her to get hit by a bus", etc. etc. Hearing these things said to me, and not to others, was highly uncomfortable for me. The professor just let it happen. Afterwards I did withdraw and decided to make this all known. I took all the proper steps as a graduate student--I KNEW what proper steps to take since I am extremely experienced with Mount Mary's policies, procedures, etc. Long story short, I tried to communicate my concerns with the President of the University but quickly afterwards I was slapped with a $1,700+ bill (which, prior to withdrawing I was assured over-and-over that I would NOT be billed--and plus, as I stated, I was fully aware of policies even financial aid ones, etc.). They also hired a lawyer who then filed a harassment injunction. I will admit that I did contact the college a lot, but not to where it warranted the injunction! I contacted them in attempts to discover why I had been billed (after being told I wouldn't be) and to attempt to tell the University's president that I have the proof of everything that was said to me (since I always recorded lectures with professors'/fellow classmates' permissions) since she seemed to find it so difficult to believe me. She shunned me, and now I have to appear as if I'm some danger to the world when I'm 100% NOT. I attended and graduated during a time when the college had a different President who was more welcoming and the culture of the college was completely different (in a better way). It's disappointing now though because I love Mount Mary College and have my share of good memories. It's terrible that the good memories have been out-shadowed by the bad. This is a women's college who used to empower women to have a voice (it's where I honed my voice). Nowadays though, if you do, beware! Risk being shunned. The campus itself is beautiful and peaceful--so much greenery surrounds you. Inside, it's cozy and you truly do feel safe. When I was last there as a graduate updates were made to the library and student lounge areas. It was great being there and I'm not going to take things out on the campus itself since the campus always embraced me. But now I'm currently banned from the campus, so yeah. I would like to just state that, when people bring situations forth (whether it's via a review or in-person), and it's not what a person wants to hear, that person/those people bringing things forth shouldn't have to suffer the consequences especially when they did so with good intentions. What I did, just like what I'm doing in providing this review, is with nothing but good intentions. (Yet I've been villainized.) All it took was a sit-down and chat. That's what it still takes. Is this a university or a soccer field? Your administration deserves to be FIRED. How can you charge students hundreds of thousands of dollars and then consistently uses their campus resources for outside influence. They deserve to have the tuition spent on them! Not soccer moms and dads coming in for the weekend. How dare you block the entrances preventing students getting to class in the morning with your outside activities. The campus should be used for the people that pay for it! Absolutely pathetic and your program counselors are not good, causing students to take extra courses and spend extra money that they do not have just so you can use their campus as a soccer field. You should be ashamed. There are plenty of other parks that could host these events but instead you choose to inconvenience your students. I really hope you think next time and actually provide something besides cafeteria food that makes you sick to your stomach after you eat it and something for your actual students. Once graduation rolls around we will never donate to you because we can clearly see you do not give a hoot about the people that actually matter. Instead of spending money on mowing huge swaths of grass so people that do not attend your university can come play soccer how about some extra grants for the students or the huge hike in tuition costs. I am a graduate of Mount Mary College, class of [May] 2008; I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication. During my undergraduate days, I loved being a student at Mount Mary. I just wish that I could've better predicted the future before deciding to attend Mount Mary College as a graduate student. I attended Mount Mary as a graduate student within its English Professional Writing program. In one of my courses I received one of my graded assignments back from the professor in a crumbled up state and severely stained with coffee. I of course would NEVER EVER turn in an assignment in such a disgusting state--what I am basically saying is that the professor did it and absolutely did not care. In another course, I would often have to hear a professor repeatedly say the word "nigger"; I was the only African American in that class of six students. During a time when we had to read a story (aloud) that we had written--of course as an assignment--my story was critiqued SO severely by both the professor -and- my fellow classmates that during the next occasion I decided to accompany myself with a recorder. I have it RECORDED of the professor and students often saying "nigger" and of other comments vile in form; i.e. (one older male student stated the following): "Your punctuation in your story is so bad that I felt as if I was getting shot at" -and- "I hate your character and just want her to get hit by a bus. Is the character you?" I absolutely would NOT lie about such events, and the recorder that I STILL have in my possession is proof. I attempted to make my matter known to the president Eileen Schwalbach, because as a woman I thought that we were to EMPOWER ourselves, but it has only led to retaliation (an unlawful bill -and- an unlawful harassment Injunction). She absolutely did not want anything to do with me, which was confusing because I thought that such matters are to be brought to her attention since she is the "leader" of the college. I was only passed along to Mr. Mickelson, Eileen Schwalbach's secretary, Reyes Gonzalez and then to attorneys. I am dead in Mount Mary's book and I've done NOTHING wrong. And I would've went to court to fight the injunction but I had to go into the emergency room due to a miscarriage. Beware if you decide to empower yourself as a[n] [African American] woman, because while empowerment is "encouraged", it is not tolerated. read more
