I started at Crawford train station, then A-Z trail, Ethan pond trail, then Willey range trail to the top. Willey range trail from Ethan pond to the summit is extremely steep. Both uphill and downhill is hard. Maybe it is better to be uphill. I am glad I was uphill. If you climb up to only Willey, there is another way to go there. Option is from Crawford station via Avalon trail and Willey range trail (this is steep but not bad), and the other way is trailhead on Crawford notch road a little south of Crawford station. Actual summit doesn't have a view, but there is a viewpoint a little south of the summit where you can see Presidential range.

There are a few brook crossings and a bridge or two. The trail is steep, so do not be fooled. It's right up hill, as us new englanders never thought switchbacks were a good ideas. Bring a good amount of water, and some summit snacks for a perfect day of hiking. In the winter time it's a different story. You should really be as prepared as you can be, hiking in the notch always, but especially in the winter. The snow creates hardened trail, that sits above the roots and rocks, so there is much less high stepping through out the hike. Still super slick, and steep, so I would suggest micro spikes or crampons. Carry the ten essentials, always, no matter how small or short or easy you think your hike will be. Doesn't hurt to also carry and buy yearly, a hike safe card, that supports search and rescue and could save you a big fee in the event of needing rescue. Plus it's only $25 dollars for the whole year. Do it! It's worth it. No matter what season you do your hike in, the last several yards, coming out of the woods and seeing the vista of the notch in front of you... it's just so beautiful. This is a great trail, any time !

This peak has a very nice view. I did a loop from route…read more113. Total is around 9 miles, 3327 feet elevation gain. Stated with Baldface circle trail, go to South Baldface, then Bicknell Ridge trail, then coming back to Baldface circle trail. In this loop, you can have two peaks, which is nice. I did this on a very hot day (38C degrees), so only 2 other people were hiking. All the peaks were only us! It was nice to take a nap on the top. Another good thing is you can stop by Emerad pool, which is great for swimming and bathing on a hot day (0.1 mile each way detour).

My quest to hike the forty-eight 4000-footers in NH brought me to Mount Tecumseh this past weekend (#7 out of 48 for me). Having had knee surgery in January, I was excited to put my hard work and training to the test in the mountains. Not wanting to overdo it... Mount Tecumseh, the shortest official 4000 footer on the Appalachian Mountain Club's list, fell into my sights. This is a great mountain for easing back into alpine hiking... or to ease into it for you newcomers! A short hike distance-wise when it comes to the mountains (5.2 miles round trip), the Mount Tecumseh/Sosman Trail that delivers you to the summit is devoid of anything considered to be very steep and drives a consistent and moderate grade up to the top. The trail is well-maintained and offers a few sights along the way. Three stream crossings early on put you at the bottom of what used to be an old logging road (hence the straight-shot upwards with few switchbacks to the top). At the halfway mark up the mountain, you get your first glimpse of the beauty that is Waterville Valley. There is a sign directing you to "View" and about 30 feet off the trail you reach one of the ski trails from the Waterville Valley Resort that resides on this mountain (this view is pictured in the photo of me sitting on a rock with my purple backpack). Soak in this view because it is the last you will see before reaching the summit. The trek up after this point is a bit monotonous. Just lots of climbing in a relatively straight line. As you get closer to the top there are less random rocky outcroppings and more established "stairs" to scramble up. This trail meets up with the Sosman and its not long before you reach the summit. There is a cairn at the top to mark the peak with a decent view of the Osceola's, the Tripyramids, and Washington way off in the distance. Parking for the trailhead can be found in the Waterville Valley Resort, Lot 1. The actual trailhead can be found just across the street from the lot. It is very difficult to see from the road, just park in lot 1 and look across. You will see the very small sign for the trailhead there.

You've heard "The Song that Never Ends", well this is the HIKE that never ends. The trail up…read moreTecumseh winds around and up up UP (up the backside of the ski resort). Rocky footing and few glimpses of the landscape also make this trek particularly less gratifying considering the 5.1 mile roundtrip. The trail base is at the base of the ski resort. The head is difficult to find along the side of the road, you have to go off to the side and there is a weeeee little sign pointing into the woods. It is an easy start over relatively level ground, switchbacks and loops around, crossing water and then spitting you out at the base of a rocky scramble up the route to the top (this was exhausting and I was glad to have boots with ankle support). The ridge just kept climbing upwards (on and on) until you meet a fork which loops up to the 4,003 foot summit and back around. The peak offers a thin view from a narrow slab.....and then you turn around. A necessary trail to tackle in order to bag all 48 400-footers....but it's a long, drawn out rummage that should be approached in the sunshine (otherwise you'll have no view at all).

It is one of the mountain in the Presidential Range. Via…read moreCaps Ridge Trail from Jefferson Notch road, it is 2.5 miles to the top. Out and back is 5 miles. 2600 feet elevation gain/loss. Good thing about this hike is the trail reaches the ridge early, so there is a lot of time to see the good views. Trail is challenging a little the last 1 mile: some scrambling required, but doable. Dogs friendly, but tough for dogs for the rocky scrambling part. The top is very windy but there is always one side winds are blocked.

Once on the trail, there are few views, until you reach the summit, then the views are spectacular. The peak itself is quite interesting to hang out and picnic on. This is also part of the Appalachain trail There are several tent sites near the peak, that I believe are first come and first served. They looked really cool! I have heard during peak seasons, rangers will do grocery runs to keep you moving without leaving the trail. We did not camp, this was a day hike for us. In the book I had used to navigate the trail, it incorrectly says the trail is under 6 miles round trip=wrong. It is under 9 miles round trip on the shortest path. This is a pretty intense hike, so plan accordingly. Also there were black flies and mosquitos on top- bring bug spray. As always when hiking large peaks, tell someone where you are going and check the weather conditions. The ranger stations are always full of information. You can also buy your National Forest usage fees there, not needed for this hike, but many spots in the White Mountain National forest do require a parking pass.
