Stepping into the Mount Dora Firehouse & Jail Museum feels like stepping back in time--and what an incredible trip it is! This little museum is bursting with charm, local history, and personality. Tucked away in a quiet corner of town, it's one of those hidden gems that you almost don't want to tell anyone about--but it's just too good to keep a secret. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and enthusiasm. The volunteer guide was an absolute treasure, full of fascinating stories and local lore. You could tell this place is run with heart and passion. They brought history to life--whether we were peeking into the old jail cells or checking out the vintage fire equipment (some of it dating back over 100 years!). Every nook is packed with Mount Dora's rich past--from the early days of the town's fire department to what it was like spending a night in the town jail (hint: not exactly luxury). It's immersive, quirky, and surprisingly educational in the best way. You don't need to be a history buff to enjoy it--this place makes learning fun and personal. Bonus points: it's super affordable, family-friendly, and a quick walk from all the cute downtown shops and cafés. If you're visiting Mount Dora, do not skip this museum. It's the kind of place that makes you fall in love with small towns all over again. 10/10 would "get arrested" again!

Not to mention being behind a flea market has its perks when there's some downtime. I like antique shopping. This is a great event for families (bring chairs if possible). There's educational performances and demonstrations, craft and food vendors (get an Indian Taco), and of course dancing. Saturday usually has the most people. My mother and I were there for the weekend and had a great time dancing, visiting with friends, and winning some "luck of the draw" money. This is done in place of dance competition so everyone gets a chance to win something. If there's ever a problem at the gate the best thing to do is to speak to a someone at the committee booth. They can help if there's miscommunication. The dancers are a major part of the powwow and are welcome into the circle for Grand Entry with the proper attire. Their powwow, their rules. After Grand Entry, anyone is allowed to come in and dance during the intertribal songs, as long as you be respectful.

It was raining, but we got in line then we were told it was men first then women second and as I approached the circle to dance I was told my attire did not qualify. I had bought the one nation shirt I was wearing at the last powwow from a vendor named Randall and had a long rawhide skirt with owl leggings, and high top boots. I was wearing feathers in my hair. I have attended powwows for many years and never been told that I cannot stay and dance. This was disrespectful to me. There were very few people there at that point because of the continuing downpour. We immediately left. Powwows are about honor and a special opportunity to teach about Native ways. There was no announcement or written rules posted regarding who would be allowed to dance at the end of the night. I would not recommend this to families due to my experience.

Note that we were not told next steps or any sort of direction after this. No direction with a deadline, or requesting us to submit an extension. We do not hear back until 3 months later with a notice that our account was sent to the law firm. Then when I contacted Jo Ann; she said "I wish you had contacted us before this year" which I then sent her proof of us reaching out to Sentry in November 2025 and apparently this didn't matter because even though I was able to prove that we did contact them and didn't receive any direction, they still told us the fees would have to be paid although their company dropped the ball. I know many people who have had this management company and have received final notices before warnings. It's very sketchy and I feel as if they are trying to get extra money even when it was their fault. I know people leaving my neighborhood due to this management company and would never recommended them.

I then received a notice that I would have to appear online at a hearing unless the issue had been taken care of. I emailed Sentry Management letting them know the issue had been resolved and requested the time for the hearing as they had not provided it. When they refused to provided the time for the hearing I spent almost 4 hours on Teams waiting for them to appear. They did not appear and now want to fine me $1000 for leaving a trash can out. It appears they only wanted to fine me as they made no effort to respond to correspondence or to appear at the hearing they scheduled. Update: I spoke with the representative for my neighborhood and we got the issue settled. While I still feel a $1000 fine is excessive for a trash can left out, I understand better the situation. I still think they should have given me a time for the meeting instead of me sitting online for almost 4 hours. I still feel they should have replied to my correspondence instead of ignoring me. I will give them an extra star for solving this misunderstanding.
