I just had a wonderful first visit with Dr. Stewart. My rescue dog, Yeti, has a bit of fear aggression when at the vet. Dr. Stewart spent 30 mins discussing Yeti's behavior and allowing Yeti to become comfortable with her presence in the room. I usually ask that he is muzzled when getting vaccinations but Dr. Stewart was able to administer his bordetella shot without any reaction from Yeti (thanks to some distracting and delicious treats!) As an owner of two rescue pups, it is so exciting and such a relief to spend time with a vet who cares so much about dog behavior and is really invested in their growth into happy healthy dogs. Could not recommend this place more! read more

First impression....Very rude receptionist. Called today for records on a client who is transferring to the hospital I manage and was immediately told to send an email to them for whatever we needed. Told her I just needed records and she said I know and you need to email as she continued to converse with her co workers , while I was on the line . No hold on a moment please, just direct and rushed rudeness. If any of my staff EVER answered the phone in this manner, they certainly would not be working at my hospital. My family took one of our pet here and they were very unprofessional, and made rude comments that made the visit uncomfortable. If I had the option to rate my experience with this clinic as less than 1, I absolutely would! I typically am not one to rate businesses however, this experience was HORRIBLE. I brought my 11 month old golden to an initial appt to be seen for a lump on his neck. To start off, the receptionist staff were terrible and lacked people/communication skills. My puppy was seen by Dr. Stewart who checked the lump and prescribed medication for an infected abscess- she told us if the lump doesn't get better, they can consider surgery to drain it. For aftercare and next steps, initially we were advised by the receptionist to give meds as prescribed and come back in 4 weeks. That didn't sound right, so after some push back and questions from my husband, the receptionist called Dr. Stewart, and then came back to us and said "on you're right he should come back in 2 weeks." There was no precautionary measures, no cone given to stop my puppy from itching where they had taken fluid and irritated the abscess. Within a day, the lump got worse and spread across his face. When we called on Wednesday to discuss this, the receptionists were flippant, condescending. Dr. Stewart contacted me and immediately began using language that was blatantly "CYA" protocol. She was blaming of me and my family, suggesting we misunderstood or did not register her recommendations correctly. Suggesting we should have known to call because after he itched the area they had worked on. Thankfully we were intelligent enough to consider our own precautionary measures and we took our puppy to Central Vet Hospital in North Haven a day and a half later, and he was immediately rushed into CTscans and recommended for an emergency surgery. The swelling was so bad that it was obstructing his respiratory tract and he needed to be held in ICU for monitoring after the procedure. All communication with Dr. Stewart and the staff at mt Carmel has been accusatory and condescending. Because of their inaccurate diagnosis, we had to double pay for another provider to conduct an accurate assessment. Dr. Stewart's negligence almost cost us the life of our puppy. Please DO NOT make the same mistake of bringing your pet to Mt. Carmel Vet in Hamden. I am thankful to team at Central Hospital who helped us out pretty much saved Oliver's life!!! read more

I am disappointed with my experience at Mt. Carmel. My pet has a persistent infection, which has not been effectively treated through multiple rounds of medication and tests. Although medication-resistant infections can take place with proper treatment, I am most discouraged by my interactions with the staff. In one instance, I was presented a treatment plan on paper and sent a long follow-up text. The follow-up text was largely duplicative of the on-paper treatment plan, with the addition of a very specific instruction ~75% through the message. I had discarded the text because it read almost identically to the paper treatment. When I called to learn about next steps after a failed test, the staff was rude with me for missing the instruction. In the same call, I asked for clarifications on next steps. The staff was short with me, stating "the instructions are all on the paper." I'd accept this as an answer if the same call hadn't started with a miscommunication as a result of the prior treatment plan being communicated via paper and text. Similar instances occurred enough times that I am convinced this interaction was not individual bad day, but rather a more pervasive customer service issue. I don't think the quantity of negative reviews are a coincidence, unfortunately. In their defense, my pet's issue was emergent and we did not have an established vet relationship in the area - Mt. Carmel was able to accept us same-day. On the other hand, the availability may be a symptom of the service. read more

I had been taking my cats to this hospital for years when Dr Matz & Dunn worked there. I never had a bad experience with Dr Stewart, but the vet assistants were awful to my cats. I actually heard my cat yelping when he was there for an exam. I decided to take the cats to a new veterinarian, and the new vet didn't have the paperwork/history for my cats yet, so they called Mt Carmel to get the records faxed over. The new vet put them on speaker phone and the girl from Mt Carmel begins to complain to the new vet about me! They are very unprofessional. read more

Worst experience of my life with a vet. Dr. Stewart and her staff lack even basic social skills. They speak in a demeaning manner to their customers, regularly berate them if they think you're not doing what they say when they say it, demand money up front before you've even been evaluated, and demand money for costly unnecessary services. The front desk staff are rude and completely lacking any veterinary knowledge (I was told "you can bring FIV in the house on your shoes"....lol. For comparison, that's like me telling a person they can get HIV from sharing a toilet seat with someone.) they bully you into paying for things you don't need, and accuse you of lying (!!!!) if you explain why you don't need it. I have hated every minute of my interactions with them but was too busy to find a new vet. The final straw was when Dr Stewart literally followed me out to my car to yet again berate me, tell me what a terrible person I am, and that "no one in the office likes you". Lololol. She also insulted me by saying she's "shocked" I myself am a doctor. At least I know not to be a psycho and follow patients out to the parking lot to insult them!!! Seriously would not believe how awful this place is if I hadn't experienced it myself. There are plenty of other caring vets out there who don't treat the pet parents like utter garbage. Oh, she trash talks customers to each other too. When I didn't spay my pet immediately instead of asking me why or what obstacle might be, she called another of her customers "negligent" and "uncaring" (which I'm sure they'd love to know their vet spoke of them to other customers this way), and no doubt she's spoken ill of me to other customers as well. She is passive aggressive constantly , demeaning, rude and tesches her staff to be the same way. God forbid you question ANYTHING said to you, you will be spoken to like an idiot. The icing on the cake is total lack of responsibility for literally anything (if you don't believe me read their negative reviews here and on Google reviews). After she followed me to my car like a crazy person, somehow she decided it was also my fault that her front staff "only make minimum wage" so I should be nicer to them (btw I've never so much as raised my voice to her staff-- I calmly told them I did not appreciate how they rudely spoke to me every time I was there ). Hey -- maybe YOU should pay your staff more than minimum wage if that's what's making them cranky. Literally no clue how that's my fault. This place is a hot mess. read more

At first Dr. Stewart seemed fine, but that's how she gets you. The second you have a dissenting opinion both her and her staff will be out to get you. We have tried for the better part of 3 years to not switch vets, but she is just impossible to work with. My dog has a rotten tooth, like squishy and extremely wobbly rotten, yet Dr. Stewart refused to recognize this reality when we asked her to check her teeth. She would prefer to belittle us and make passive aggressive comments about a disagreement from 2 years ago. Putting up with her is not worth it for the subpar level of care they provide. If you plan to see Dr. Stewart the level of care your animal receives will be entirely dependent on how much she likes you. I think that she forgets that while the animals cannot speak, we are the ones who spend everyday with them and must advocate on their behalf. Horrible doctor! Dr Stewert will euthanize your pet even when you chose to live out his last days at home. She did it anyway after messing up his surgery and lecturing, practically yelling at my grieving daughter because we made a choice she didnt like. Twice has added fees that we didnt tell her to do that I do at home. I didnt want our babys nails clipped since he was in pain and they werent bad yet guess who did it during his last day alive?! The lady is set on doing what SHE wants not owner. She may be a doctor but she does not know pets, saying ours wasnt in that much pain yet and we should wait until the problem grew! Less than an hour after we put our beloved cat Apollo down using a home visit from a traveling vet, we received a call from Doctor Stewart who was Apollo's primary care vet. She spent the first 10 seconds of the call expressing condolences and then proceeded to "Remind" us that she does offer at home euthanasia and that our other cat Rocky, "Isn't doing well" and may need it soon. We were in such shock to receive this phone call trying to sell her services and reminding us that our cat was dying that we hung up and didn't raise any issues. When I told this story to my brother, he was understandably upset on our behalf and made a call to them to complain. Mt Carmel proceeded to minimize and lie to him. Stating that they did not reference the fact that Rocky was sick (They 100% did) and telling my brother that I was "Abrasive" and he was only hearing one side of the story. The vet is totally incapable of hearing any criticism or dissenting opinion. Do not dare question Dr Stewart or you will face her lies and her wrath. (See her responses to other negative reviews) After they lied and minimized the situation on the phone with my brother, she proceeded to call my girlfriend and blame the mobile vet for "informing them too early." She also said that my brother was "yelling" when he only politely tried to make it clear how inappropriate the phone call was. He raised his voice once to counter the fact that they would not let him get a word in and were unable to apologize or accept any responsibility. The timing, one day, one week, doesn't even matter when you are literally trying to sell us on your euthanasia services to put down a second cat. This is just the last in a string of unprofessional and shocking behavior from this vet. I am literally in shock at the lack of bedside manner, the lies and deceptions and gaslighting we have been put through. She never missed an opportunity to shame us and make us feel like we were unsuitable pet owners even though we spent thousands of dollars and thousands of hours loving and providing for our three 17-year-old cats. As I'm reading all the very bad reviews, I also left Mt Carmel Vet almost a year ago and so very Happy I did. Since Dr Dunn left, I saw a big and horrible change in the way Dr Stewart operates this Vet business. She has lied to me as well and twists the stories around for her own well being. She even had the nerve to call my home after she read my last review and left a detailed message. The truth hurts doesn't it? I noticed she even removed my former review. I will never forget the many times I told her to check my dogs teeth. I could tell they needed cleaning. She kept saying his teeth are fine, you're looking at his gums. Hello! I know gums from teeth and to me they look like they need cleaning. To make a long story, and after a few years later, she agreed to clean his teeth. I was appalled after hearing she had to extract 8 of my dogs teeth, after asking her year after year to check his teeth. If she did what I told her to do in the first place, my dog wouldn't have had eight teeth extracted all at one time. I also found out that her prices are way sky high compared to where I now take my dog. Yes, some of her staff can be rude, that needs to Stop! We pay your salary, are you forgetting that? Without your dog patients you wouldn't be able to stay in business. You need to keep that in mind at all times. I do agree with all the others, take your pet elsewhere not Mt Carmel Vet. Do not bring your pet here! Every time my dog needed a vaccine they had ME pin her down in the entryway of the building! Didn't even let us in to the office to receive the vaccine. My poor dog was confused as to why I had to hold her down, I've never experienced this in a vets office and I've had dogs for over 25 years. Usually a vet tech holds the dog, as they're trained to do? I can *maybe* see if my dog was a crazy monster, but she's never even growled at any of them and she's only 30lbs. As a previous member of this practice it doesn't shock me To see how bad these reviews are. Dr. Stuart reuses syringes for her "shelter cats" which is completely disgusting and unethical. She washes and reuses gloves to keep her staff from using too much product. She does not give any printed papers such as bills/ receipts/ rabies certificates to clients in order to conserve paper ( which for some older clients can be difficult because not everyone uses email or has a smartphone) . She not only will belittle her staff but she speaks to her clients in a disgusting manner. Her way of practice is completely inappropriate and puts good veterinary medicine and care to shame. I'm truly surprised she has not been shut down yet by the better business bureau or at least I hope she has it coming. Not meant to demean the staff or Dr.'s, but this is a copulation of comments I wrote on their Facebook site regarding my interactions during my visit on 3/25/21. If you look further on you will see that, Kim D., Burgaw, NC., 10/28/2020 had an almost identical experience. You decide..... ( I wrote) Really not happy with Dr. Stewart. The conversation could have been handled better. I did not need to be told 5 or 6 times that the tumor was "so" big & that I should have recognized that it had increased in size so much. It felt very condescending & demeaning to me as a caregiver to my dog. Been going here for over 10yrs. & never had an experience like that. Will consider looking elsewhere for Vet. care. Dr. Stewart has cared for my four dogs and three cats and the countless rescue animals I have homed for the past 3 years and I could not be any more impressed by her commitment to each dog in taking the time to chat with me about each animals specific issues & their care. She is always spot on with her advice. Amy, Rosalie and Laura up front are absolutely amazing. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. Just an awful experience. Dr Stewart May have thought she was telling me so thing new in her demeaning and condescending tone..she was actually losing a client as she spoke. The care she gave my pet was substandard and non compassionate. I asked if my dog can have his nails clipped. Needed it desperately ( he won't let me at all do it ). She would only clip his dew claws...really? Let the other nails be long? I also got scolded for making my own dog food. Having my dog not groomed (long nails). And the dog having an ear infection. Dr Stewart is truly one of a kind. She is honest and always puts the animals first. I have never met a vet as dedicated to helping animals with a willingness to go above and beyond. I have been bringing my dog, Tremble, to this vet for years... when Dr.Dunn was still working here. My dog is known for having allergic reactions to every vaccine he receives, (not the vets' fault... that's just his allergies). Dr.Dunn always remembered that Tremble needed special care when it came to vaccines and would need to be given a shot of steroids to counter-react the allergic reaction or else he would literally die. (His face gets extremely swollen and he can't breathe) It's worked every single time he's gotten a vaccine. A few years ago, Dr.Stewart took over as the main vet and every single appointment we have had, Dr. Stewart has challenged me in regards to Tremble's allergic reactions. Dr. Stewart did not believe me at first when I mentioned his allergies. After giving him a vaccine and seeing his reaction with her own eyes did she finally believe me. Dr. Stewart gives him the shot of steroids and he's immediately much better. However, she continues to give me an issue on the shot of steroids and his allergies for every single appointment. Dr.Stewart claims that he doesn't have a reaction to ALL the vaccines only four out of the seven made for dogs. (A ridiculous claim: He is MY dog, who I would do ANYTHING for and I know him better than anyone- he has had a reaction to EACH and EVERY vaccine he has received). Today he had another vaccine for his routine checkup, and this was the last straw!!! He almost died! After getting him home, sure enough he begins to have an allergic reaction (his vaccine was at 10 and he usually starts to react an hour later) so we quickly call the vet and they tell him to bring him back. We bring Tremble back and instead of a shot of steroids, Dr Stewart gives him an oral steroid pill without consulting me. As soon as my dog gets home he gets sick and throws the pill up. Now he has no steroids to counter-react the allergic reaction and his face gets so swollen and red he starts to cry but can't breathe. We called the vet about 10 minutes later (at around 11:45am) and everyone is on lunch break until 3pm. THREE PM. If you were a responsible vet and you knew you just had a dog who was having an allergic reaction, wouldn't you call before going on lunch break to ask how he's doing and see if he's feeling better? Or is your three hour lunch break that important you forget about him???? Absolutely ridiculous. The receptionist is a nasty woman who will give you attitude for calling about your pet and Dr. Stewart should go back to school and be taught how to actually care for pets and listen to the owners. Never in my life have I been so disgusted by service received. All Mount Carmel hospital cares about is charging their customers and having no care for the wellness of your pet. I am so glad I changed vets today. Tremble is at the hospital now staying for observations after receiving the care he needed. No thanks to Dr.Stewart. Moved to Connecticut about a year ago and looked for a Vet for our pets. We found MCVH near our home because of convenience. After a few visits with one of our dogs we decided to bring our other one. Without giving many details about each dog I will focus the review on their conduct because that is the route and core of this review process. Dr. Stewart has a very condescending demeanor when speaking with her. Her mannerisms are unprofessional and borderline abusive in tone. As for the care of our pets let me just say this, if any of my pets were dying and I had a choice of Dr. Stewart or Dr.Kevorkian I would chose Dr. Kervorkian. Trust reviews folks, trust your intuition and trust the people who take the time to read and write reviews. I will never bring my pets there again. My only regret is not having spent the time to read what people had written here before going there..LESSON LEARNED. MCVH needs to rethink why they are there and change the way they go about the care of animals and respect their owners with compassion and understanding instead of condescending back talk. Have been taking our many pets here for over 15 years. The Dr's are great. Dr. Stewart was incredibly kind and caring when we had to put our dog down last year. But the push for expensive treatments and guilting done by the front desk staff is so unpleasant and off putting that we're going somewhere else. My last encounter with the receptionist when my husband and I had several mix-ups over appt times was so rude and obnoxious even after I'd explained the mix-up and apologized profusely that I don't want to go back there ever. I waited an entire year to write this because I was so shocked, heartbroken and genuinely disappointed. I was a client for far too long. Dr. Stewart and the receptionists at this practice are rude, curt and insensitive. One of our dogs was at the end of his life and Dr. Stewart refused to listen to his heart rate during his last appointment - yet recommended a procedure that was costly and essentially ineffective. He was elderly and his heart was weak. We ended up calling a holistic vet who took the time to assess his condition and put him to sleep in our home. read more

I had just adopted a cat from the Meriden Humane society and I called Mount Carmel because it was close to my home. I had no idea that I wasn't able to meet anyone face to face or that I wasn't allowed to go in for the exam with my newly adopted cat. The cat freaked out when given a shot and I was told that my cat had a parasite and needed treatment. Everything was done by text and e-mail, very impersonal. I'm an elderly women and not very tech savvy. I was upset about having to pill a cat I hardly new and I hadn't read the directions properly, so I had called them numerous times the people answering the phones got very annoyed with me and were clearly impatient. They spoke very condescending and had a nasty tone. I decided after talking with a women named Breanna, who was clearly irritated with me that this was not a good place for me and my pet. I don't recommend going to Mount Carmel Vet hospital unless you enjoyed being spoken to like a child. read more

DO NOT GO HERE FOR EXOTIC PETS! I have 2 sugar gliders and was planning on getting one of them neutered at this vet. I am so glad I asked questions because I was extremely disappointed and immediately cancelled the operation with the answers the (very condescending) receptionist gave me. Sugar glider procedures are meant to be very simple to provide minimal stress to these small and social creatures. They seem to take every step to make it as costly and dangerous as possible. They also informed me that if he were to stop breathing during the procedure it would cost $200 for a 2%-3% success rate. And worst of all, they failed to inform me that they had NEVER DONE A SUGAR GLIDER NEUTERING! This would have been useful information before I spent almost $100 for his pre examination. After cancelling the condescending receptionist told me I would not have much luck finding other vets who would do this procedure and would cost more with the methods I'm looking for. Maybe she doesn't realize that we are willing go to whatever distance and cost necessary to get our glider safe and responsible care. Dr. Stewart was clear with us about what we should expect as we charted a course of palliative care for our cat, but also sensitive to our feelings, and her table-side manner was impeccable. This experience was replicated throughout our not-quite year of visits to Mount Carmel, and in our interactions with the whole staff. When the time finally came, Dr. Stewart was never the less than kind and supportive, but she was also honest about what was best for our pet, which we greatly appreciated. As if to underscore the level of care shown, today we received a card in the mail, with a personal note from Dr. Stewart, signed by the rest of the staff. I found Stewart and her "staff" to be lacking in compassion and caring for my dog. Very poor communication between staff, Stewart and myself. Just an aside, the place is not kept well. My poor dog had a BM while we sat in a waiting room for over an hour. There were no gloves etc to clean it up so I had to leave it there. I could go on and on, but there are a lot of really good Vets to chose from in the area so I am not going back there. read more

I had the pleasure of bringing my pet to Dr. Stewart. My dog was having some worrisome resource guarding issues. Being a first time pet owner, I was incredibly distraught and nervous. Dr. Stewart was tremendously reassuring. She was incredibly nonjudgmental, comforting, and detailed when it came to recommending next steps to overcome the issue with my dog. She is so passionate about what she does, and I highly recommend you bring your animal to her - especially if you are a first time pet owner like me! She answers any questions you may have - no question is "too silly", and her opinion is well informed and valuable. I will be bringing all of my pets to her in years to come! read more

Dr. Farrell is truly missed at Mt Carmel in Hamden! He loved animals and made a connection with them and their parents (pet owners). The new staff at Mt. Carmel is cold and can careless about the well-being of the animals or the owners. Often, people walk away feeling berated by the Veterinarian who accuse owners of not properly caring for their pet (i.e. food choices, flea/tick protection, heart worm medication). This is your kind of place if you have lots of money, want to receive follow up calls requesting more test, and want just the "facts". It's obvious that Dr. Farrell got into the profession for one reason, a love for animals, and it is obvious she got into the profession for another reason... read more

Dr. Stewart always goes above and beyond! I would recommend all my friends and family to bring their pets to her for all their needs.

Throughout the first few months of having my dog, I was taking her to Mount Carmel. The staff at the front desk was friendly, however the vet tech had a terrible table-side manner and throughout multiple phone calls with her to discuss lab results, I have been offended by her demeanor and the way that she described my pet's conditions. As a first-time dog owner, I am bound to have questions about my pet's various issues, and when finding out that she had a serious case of Giardia, rather than explaining calmly what was wrong with my dog, the tech bluntly stated what her lab results found, and then proceeded to berate me with irrelevant issues that I found flippant and unprofessional. I have no problems with Mount Carmel as a facility, but will not be returning here after multiple incidents with this type of treatment. read more
