I pinned the location on my Google Map app and we were able to find the home very easily. A great marker for the next fan to find is look for the huge water tower with Andy and Opie mural painted on it. The house sets near the base of that tower. I parked outside of the home and took a few snapshots with my phone. The house was already closed for the day. I was just happy to see the home.

And sits just outside of the historic Main Street area that has shops and places to eat along with all kinds of Mayberry props for the die hard fans of the show. I did not stay here so I can't speak for the setup inside but you can either drive by to see this home yourself or take one of the Mayberry police car tours and they will swing by and show you the home. Overall interesting and cool thing to check out if visiting mount airy North Carolina.

Earlier in the week I had signed up…read morefor the final spot in one of their tours today as I made plans to spend a long weekend of wineries, waterfall hikes and breweries. And the wine hop bus tour was a major component of what I wanted/planned to do this weekend. In claiming the final spot on this particular tour I thought I would be joining other singles, perhaps, and some couples for a day of wine tasting and winery touring. But no. This was a a group of 8 30-something women out on a girls day out for a birthday celebration. Vine Line knew that when they allowed me - a single man (while social and gregarious I am in my early 60s) - to book the reservation and board the bus. In spite of this incongruity everything seemed fine until we got to the first winery when one of the women "without wanting to be rude" very rudely said they did not want me at the winery - a concept I understood because it seemed odd to me as well. She then told me I wasn't even welcome on their bus - a service I had paid Vine Line for, and not them - and that she had called Vine Line about this. A few minutes later I got a call from Vine Line confirming this. What was supposed to be a gorgeous fun day winery hopping turned into something awkward, uncomfortable, and embarrassing for me - and unnecessarily so given that Vine Line owners - either Shannon or Dennis - could have (should have) interceded so that I did not end up totally out on of place what effectively was a private tour. I don't blame the ladies - except for the tone/words of one of them. This was all on Vine Line. Vine Line's first solution was to offer a private driver to take me to the different wineries. No go - signed up to go to the wineries with other people and not to be privately chauffeured by someone I didn't know. I had to ask for a refund before I was offered one - that should have been the first thing they did. This would be a one-star event. But the owner did take ownership of the situation and apologized for it (although the further he went into his explanation the less logical sense it made but I decided not to challenge it - it was a negative enough day as it was) . Over two hours later they made a mitigating offer of two gift certificates for future use. Because the owner took ownership of this mess and apologized, and because of the mitigating offer my one star is now two stars. When I once again have someone in my life with whom I travel I will go out and give them another chance - this is something that really should have been a lot of fun.

We still had a twenty-minute drive to the lodge when we reached the North gate. The drive was pretty, though, and passed quickly. The circular driveway in front of the lodge was clogged with cars, forcing us to park down the road a bit. No one was around to welcome us, and finding someone took us a bit. Once we did, the valets quickly took care of us, and we were checked in. Our room on the second floor overlooked the 18th green and a valley on the backside of the lodge. It was terrific: large and spacious, with lots of wood and chunky lodge-style furnishings. The bathroom was huge, with a large tub, separate shower, and his-and-hers sinks. The minibar came stocked with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and some snacks. While staying here, we enjoyed their astronomy presentation at the top of the silo, walking on several trails through the nearby woods, time in the spa, and making smores out back by the fire pit in the evening with the other guests. There was a special cocktail hour with apps and drinks, and a chance to talk to some of the local providers of food and items to the hotel. They do an excellent job of using local sources for the lodge. Dining was top notch, except at the Stables family-style restaurant. The Stables was a disappointment. Our other meals though in the lodge were top notch. The staff at Primland is the best, and they are what make this place so special. Come visit in the summer and enjoy the cooler temperatures of the mountains.

They have avgas on the field, 100LL, and maps and other pilot goodies can be found. On weekends, it is a great place to shoot the shit if flying is your thing. Office hours have always been shaky, if you are coming in at night and need services, call ahead and make sure someone will be there, otherwise divert to Winston Salem (INT). Lastly, it must have the brightest damned rotating beacon in the known world. You can see the thing in night VFR conditions climbing out of Charlotte (CLT)!

It has a pretty loud window type air conditioner (that smelled like it was on fire when we turned it up but it mellowed out), a small coffee maker missing the pod tray, and a mini fridge. The bathroom is tiny and has a corner triangle shower. It'll get the job done. The exhaust fan sounds like a cat in heat. If you're bougie dont stay here. If you are thrifty definitely stay here. Front desk guy was super friendly!

The manager of the campground was very friendly and helpful. He showed us to our site, saying to be sure to let him know if we needed anything or had questions. The next morning, our truck would not start, and he and his wife were so kind and helpful. He even came to our site, crawled under the truck to see if he could figure something out. His wife checked to see if any local mechanics were open on a weekend and made sure we were able to stay in our site as long as was needed till we could get to a dealership that would have the parts and mechanics on hand to diagnose and fix our truck. The manager even drove my husband in to town to pick up a few needed items at a local store! We really appreciated the way they extended such hospitality, going above and beyond to help us out. We will come back here again, for sure, the next time we are back in this area!

The cabins are clean and comfortable, however they have no running water, so you'll be enjoying the aforementioned restrooms and showers. Beautiful setting, with a stunning sunset view. They also offer WiFi, which is something of a rarity along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
