Tucked away on the west side of Taylor Hall, an art installation by one of the former art students of Herron can be found. The piece is called "Mother's Helper" and leaves me a little bewildered about the artist's intent.
At the base, there is a large cross made of stainless steel. A sculpted infant curls up on the intersection of the cross with an metal dictionary by the head. On either side of the cross are "rockers" that support a high chair that rises high above the cross. I've never seen a high chair with rockers before since it seems hard enough to get kids to eat without having them sit in a moving target.
I'm not sure why the artist selected the position of each piece in relation to the others though I can interpret that the elements included may be relevant to the artist's belief in childhood development.
