Based on my documented experience I would not recommend Sheldon Maughan, nor would I use him again…read more I would recommend that you use Laurie Cordero of the Atwood Agency in Placerville. In my opinion Mr. Maughan, for whatever reason, refuses to perform even the most basic business functions such as opening the mail or emails regarding his clients policies and consequently does not perform even the most basic functions of his position as a agent in a professional or timely manner. Time and again he has failed to provide service to me when I needed it. On Sept 24, 2018 I called Mr. Maughan to inform him that I had sold my house and would be cancelling my policies. I also gave him my new address. On Oct 1, 2018 I sent Mr. Maughan an email telling him again that I had sold my house and to cancel my home owners insurance as of Oct 5, the close of escrow. The email contained my new address where he should send the refunds. The insurance had been placed with Lloyds of London through Abrams Interstate Insurance Services in Rocklin. On Oct 2, I sent a copy of my cancellation email to Abrams Interstate. Abrams sent Mr. Maughan a form for me to sign, since insurance must be cancelled in writing. On Oct 22, 2018 I called and inquired about my refund, since I had not received it. He admitted that he had not even read the email from Abrams which contained the cancellation notice, and then sent it to me, which I immediately signed electronically. On Nov 7, I again called and inquired about my refund, which I still had not received. He admitted that Abrams had mailed him the refund on Nov 1, 2018, and that he had not even opened it or checked his mail until I called about it. He claimed that he would mail me the refund on Nov 7, 2018 but as of Nov 13, 2018 I have not received it, although my new address is only 20 miles from office. Once again, he has failed to act in a timely manner. You have to ask yourself, in this era of wildfires, do you want something as important as home insurance in the hands of an agent who doesn't even open the mail or email regarding your policies? I have filed 2 complaints against him with the department of insurance.

When I took possesion of my rental I was told not to change my property's status as the price would go up if it changed from rental to owner occupied. Lying on my policy is a HUGE liability, but this is what my broker instructed me to do. Then my liability policy for my 3 acres of "dirt" was cancelled. I had no idea for 3 months that I had no liability policy. The only reason I found out was because I check my financial well being including the status of my insurance. I was promised that Farmers would "check on it". Never heard about it again. After changing to Allstate in September I was sent a bill for 3 days of policy coverage or "shortage" of $40.22 for October. I sent copies of my Allstate policy which clearly showed no shortfall. The final straw was that Sewell's staff had been telling me for years that "no one in my area covered fire insurance" and I was pushed off to California FAIR Plan. Turns out Farmers has moved out of California and pushed fire coverage off to a secondary service provider. Allstate provided me fire insurance for less money than CA FAIR plan. Sewell office staff will lie to you, cancel portions of your policy with out telling you and ignore it when you provide proof of insurance when you leave their services. Because I will not let a collections letter ruin my credit I paid the $40.22. But, moving forward, I will not hold my breath waiting for my refund. DO NOT USE FARMERS OR INSURANCE FROM THIS BROKER.
