Certainly a place I would stay at when back in the area and in need of a place to stay. The rooms are furnished, recently refreshed and the bathroom looks new. The linens seemed clean as one would hope! Breakfast, well, it's a gift with purchase and certainly not anything to write home about. While I understand some of these chain type hotel breakfasts can be the same, most will at least change it up and rotate. Every single day was the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I love me a waffle, but some variety would be appreciated.

The second was the soft, distant piano music as if someone was in another part of the hotel offering a welcoming serenade. Then I notice the decor is perfect as is the architecture. I would not have been surprised if an ancient Majordomo or Concierge came out of some hidden nook to greet me. The exterior and interior appearance is perfect. The people were great! Always right there to assist. Our room was super clean and well maintained and the bed was great (if a little high for my short wife). I had a couple of requests after we arrived that were handled promptly and with ease. Breakfast was attended to by a charming hostess trying to anticipate our every need. Not the largest selection, but certainly more than adequate in a clean and pleasant library setting with an inviting fireplace. Disappointingly, they'd lost their old Bassett Hound "Waddling Dog" earlier this year. Pictures of and referrences to him were all about still. Connected inside the hotel was a great local Pub offering local beers & ciders plus tasty foods. We had a lunch and a dinner there. Again, here the staff was super attentive. Probably the most surprising of all was the nameplate, Quality Inn, which I think of as third tier accomodations. THIS was absolutely on par or even better than some Choice or Clarion properties I have stayed in.

Beacon Inn - Lopez Island room

Normally I would not pursue a hotel near an airport for even an overnight stay - I prefer B&Bs or…read moresmall hotels in an area of interest. However, in choosing a place to overnight on my way home from Quadra Island, BC, I found Beacon Inn. It is a lovely, Edwardian style inn built in 2000 with modern finishes. It is the area's only Canada Select 5-Star accommodation. The Victoria BC airport is actually in Sidney, up the peninsula, which is a very pretty small town on the sea. Communication ~ all done via email, perfect and timely Rate ~ fair for my choice of room (third floor, no elevator) @ $166 with all taxes Location ~ just outside the commercial area of Sidney and it is easy to find Service ~ they offer an evening sherry in the lobby along with tea and coffee station, lemon water and snacks in the dining room. There is a binder of menus in the lobby. Room ~ stunning in decor: a high bed, flat screen TV, free Wifi, electric FP, windows that open for a breeze, portable air exchanger and a large bath with spa soaking tub, glass shower and full array of Nourish bath products. (see photo) Food ~ I am certain that their "gourmet" breakfast was just that, but my flight to Seattle left at 9 am and I had to return a rental car. They offer two seatings - 8:00 am and 9:15 am - neither of which I could enjoy given my schedule. I was pleased to take their Grab N Go from the fridge, described as "scrumptious." But it consisted of only a Red Delicious apple, a tiny piece of cheddar cheese, a chocolate candy, a tiny raisin muffin and a juice box. I was disappointed since part of the price of a room includes breakfast and this was less than comparable. The kitchen did not even offer a styro or other take-away cup for coffee. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. I would highly recommend this inn if you are staying near the airport or visiting Victoria, just 30 minutes away. There are a few tourist sites within an easy drive of Sidney as well.

The room was so nice the first night we decided to stay a second night in the third floor suite and spend the day at Butchart Gardens. They also accommodated us at breakfast with a gluten free speciality, a frittata filled with ham and veggies and sour cream or cheese and a fruit and yogurt parfait. Although we rarely spend this much for a place to stay, the whole experience was a time to remember and I'm sure will be a highlight of our trip to Canada.

First, the parking and registration is not so easy. If you're carrying luggage, be prepared to wheel it down a windy path toward a the reception door. When we were asked for a travel voucher, to which we presented the Orbitz reservation number; however this was not reflected in any reservation for The Latch Inn. They were also booked with no availability, so we had to find other lodging accommodations. We called to ask for an earlier check in since the Orbitz reservation indicated check in only from 4:00pm - 6:00pm. But at 3:15pm there was no answer at The Latch Inn, so we left a message. At 6:10pm a representative from The Latch Inn called us to ask what the message was because she could not find our reservation. Bad experience with Orbitz and with this situation. I am open to management response.

There were two gentlemen working there - not sure if they were brothers or not, but they were overwhelmed with the breakfast service. While the food was very good, the service was painfully slow - plan for in excess of one hour for breakfast, even if there are only 3-4 other tables. When I think of an Inn, I anticipate a caretaker with a lot of knowledge of the area. The two men working had a huge language barrier thus we stuck with the basic communication. And yes, you will hear your immediate neighbors very clearly.

David (who has checked us in each time) is the best! Their motel rooms are quite comfortable, rustically stylish, and come with a Nespresso coffee maker (and plenty of pods), mini-fridge, a smart TV, and triple-sheeted duvets. The breakfast pastries and dinner offerings at the on-site restaurant are delightful too. I recommend making resos far in advance since they book up quickly for summer weekends. Check-in was done at the lobby. At the lobby one will also find a store and a coffee shop. Complimentary movies and games can also be checked out at the lobby to enjoy back at your lodging. The store offers a little bit of everything, from clothing to snacks. Complimentary ice machines are available. Bagged ice can be purchased though. Lower-level parking is limited and was completely full in the evenings. We were lucky enough to get a parking spot every time we returned from playing. Wheel barrel type carts located at the gate make transporting luggage effortless to rooms. Adirondack chairs are scattered about the edge of the property to enjoy sipping a beverage, reading or admiring the view. A fire-pit, community BBQ, picnic area and kids play area help pass the time while on-site. The paly area is at the lobby end for those who do not wish to have quarters near noise. The cabin we were given was number 10, a handicap unit. The very first cabin upon entrance and the furthest from the lobby and play area. Our cabin was clean and well equipped. Snug Harbor provided us the peace that we were seeking at the time. My one suggestion would be to offer fresh baked chocolate chip cookies in the lobby to establish a more personal touch.

And when I say excellent price I mean about $100 a night, so yeah pretty great for 4 people. Plus there was a complimentary breakfast and free wifi, all included! There was supposed to be a free shuttle from the port where we came in to the hotel, however when we called to confirm that they apologized saying the shuttle runs to the airport instead of the port at the time we needed it. So what did they do? They called a cab for us, and PAID OUR CAB FAIRE. Now that's service. Everyone was extremely courteous and friendly. In our room, the phone didn't work because of an old cable, and when we told the desk they switched it out for us immediately, no problem. Their continental breakfast was surprisingly varied, although don't expect a Hilton line up. It was filling and plenty tasty. The room was clean and pleasant, with a very nice TV with a huge channel selection and like I said, FREE no-strings-attached WIFI. Finally, after leaving the hotel, a concierge chased us all the way to the port attempting to return a book that he thought we had left behind. I have never received such excellent service, well anywhere really, before this. I recommend this hotel 100%, 10/10 would stay at again. The town it's in is quaint and very pretty too. The pub next door however? Definitely pass on that.
