These folks saved my neck on a sticky (to me) IRS issue. Knowledgeable, responsive and incredibly kind folks.

I had a good experience with Flatirons Advisors in 2024, but I'm updating my review because my 2025…read moreexperience was very negative and I can no longer recommend them. I have complicated crypto taxes and did my best to communicate this from the start, including a 45-minute call with Steve specifically about my crypto taxes before my 2024 return was filed. I made clear that the documents I sent, including a Schedule 1, were generated by my crypto tax software. In 2025, I discovered that the Schedule 1 income I provided had been left off my 2024 return. Steve never asked me what it was, never requested supporting documentation, and never told me he was omitting it. He simply left it off silently. When I raised it, he claimed he hadn't known I had complicated crypto taxes, which I believe is false and I have messages with the firm showing we discussed it. He also declined to prepare my 2025 return due to the crypto complexity, leaving me to find a new preparer on short notice. When I requested a refund of my 2024 prep fee, he refused unless I provided evidence of the income's source. While compiling that, I found that a mistake in my tax software had overstated the figure, and that the corrected amount was lower. I decided the refund wasn't worth pursuing, and I'm having the amendment handled by another firm. Steve was right to question the number. But the professional response was to ask for documentation before filing, not to silently drop income off a return without a word to the client. At no point did he acknowledge any mistake or take any accountability. In my opinion, that handling was not what a client should expect from a tax preparer, and based on my experience, I can't recommend them.

Brad also gave us some good advice about creating a new bed and breakfast business that we were planning. For 2018 the situation was not as happy. We created the bed and breakfast as a limited-liability company partnership, and asked Brad's firm to prepare the tax returns for the LLC as well as our individual returns. After looking at the paperwork for a few days, Brad called on February 28 and declined to do any of the work, saying that he didn't have time to make the March 15 deadline for the LLC filing (we turned the paperwork in on February 25), that this was not what he was expecting after our conversation last year, and that he didn't appreciate having this sprung on him. He advised me to find another firm to do the work, and asked me to come in and pick up my paperwork. He did not offer to file an extension for the LLC (I later found out there is a form for a 6-month automatic extension), and did not offer to do the individual returns if we could get the LLC return finished somewhere else. I thought it was unlikely I could get a new CPA at this point, and was not aware of the possibility of getting an extension. After some studying I decided that the TurboTax Business program could probably do the LLC return for me, without getting an extension. I spent about 2 days studying the forms and instructions, and about 2 hours entering and checking the data, and was able to file on March 4 without too much trouble.

When I asked for an example of strategic roadmap or for a list of what was included in it they would not give me a direct answer. They pontificated about how it depends on clients situation and said it's a heady and complicated subject. They were very prompt in sending me requests for payment after every interaction I had with them but didn't answer a single one of my questions asking what was included in their services. My experience aligns with the poor reviews here. They like to say "our teams knowledge and experience makes what we charge worth it". But I'm sorry saying that you're knowledgeable does not make it so. When they can't even show a basic understanding of what a good financial plan should include by at a minimum putting into a list what it includes for potential clients that does not instill confidence.

I am incredibly grateful to Ernie for helping be with what could have been a completely devastating financial situation.
