Happy to report the THIRD time I contacted Mort he 1.) still took my call 2.) was as responsive and knowledgeable as I remember and 3.) had not raised his fees when he remembered me. Nice guy, honest, but incompetent. Definitely better options out there when buying/selling property. Hired Mort when I sold my condo and the whole process was full of miscommunication. The biggest mistake they made was sending out emails to the wrong e-mail address, despite me correcting them several times. Even the day before closing, Lisa M manages to send out messages to the wrong e-mail address, which nearly ruined the whole deal. If any deadline passes, you have to contact them to see what's going on. Moreover, I often found typos and mistakes in their official responses which is strange for a law office. My feeling was that they were probably over worked. If you do hire these guys, negotiate them down to $250. Otherwise go with someone more competent, there are plenty of lawyers in Chicago. read more

The problem with buyers and sellers is that they view real estate lawyers as parity... And hire them at the last minute....on short notice... Trust me, any real estate lawyer can screw up a deal or cost you more money... This is why you want Mort Rubin as "your attorney" and not their attorney! First off, and this is funny as all heck, I recently got a call for a reference on Mort's ability to represent a buyer and, get this, their main concern was; "Mort is less expensive than the other attorneys I have spoken to and I am afraid that I will get what I paid for!" Have bought and sold houses for many years with Mort Rubin and would never go anywhere else.... Why? If you engage Mort Rubin in a real estate transaction, you not only get Mort, you get his staff! And, trust me on this, Mort's staff keeps the ball rolling! Now, if you are like me, you like to talk to "the boss." And, after a few transactions, I started reviewing the emails and letters and came to the revelation that Mort has built "a machine" with highly competent people who are both responsive and know when Mort needs to intervene.... In other words, once you engage Mort, his staff will be contacting you, relaying information to you and making requests for information, far in advance of your closing, to make sure that you will close on time! Mort's staff is as important to you as Mort....Perhaps more =) But, fear not, if the buyer or seller makes an unreasonable demand or circumstances "change" and you are worried; Mort will not dodge you, he will be accessible...
