I recently attended an event at Morrison Hotel Gallery and was absolutely amazed at the fabulous photography that they have available for sale to the public. There were some of the most iconic images taken of rock and roll stars both on stage and in more relaxed settings. Being the multi-tasker that I am, I knew I wanted to see a show at the Morrison Hotel Gallery so I scheduled a business lunch at the Sunset Marquis so I was able to kill two birds. This friendly little gallery was displaying photographs taken by and of Stevie Nicks. The woman working in the gallery was very pleasant and welcoming, offered information about the photos on display and encouraged me to sign up for updates of future shows. She also encouraged me to walk around the hotel because fascinating pictures and pieces of art are on display throughout the Sunset Marquis. The gallery is tiny, so if you're coming just to see a show probably best to arrange to grab lunch or a drink at one of the really good places in the hotel. And hey, that way you'll get a validated discount on the (necessary) valet parking. read more

5 stars as long as the Bob Gruen photo show is resident. Fantastic and classic images, mostly from the early NY proto punk and punk scene (Dictators, Patti Smith, Ramones, Blondie, Television, Lou Reed), plus the big boys like Zep, The Who, Stones. Some great Sex Pistols shots too. I love the unlikely pairings most, like Mick Jagger and David Johansen. read more

Sure I'll miss seeing John John Jesse's work at CBGB gallery, but I'm glad Morrison Hotel Gallery moved in! Walking up the Bowery, a monumental print of a mustard-smeared Sid Vicious invited me in. The staff smiled and welcomed me as I immersed myself in Bob Gruen's "Rocker" prints. This is one of THE best photography retrospectives I've ever seen. Like most folks, I've poured through hundreds of rock photos over the years. Bob Gruen's prints capture his subjects in a sincere, day-to-day style rarely seen in the rock glossys. The Installation of a teenage bedroom in the center of the gallery- plastered with vintage fliers-grounds the exhibit. Walking through the installation; I felt as if it could have been my own teenage bedroom, and the photos surrounding it were each and every show I'd been to as a kid. Here are my highlights... -Print of The Boss on stage with his mom. (Cute!) -Photo of Joey Ramone in swimming trunks! (Rockaway Beach?!) -Photo of Johnny Rotten getting some vocal back-up from a council-house eight-year-old at holiday show. (This is what it's all about.) -Photo of Tina Turner kissing David Bowie. (Hot!) -Glossy of Mick Jagger looking pissed-off as he records with John Lennon and Yoko. (Just go and look for yourself--he's not "concentrating", he's pissed!) -Print of a tired Malcolm McLaren in his office. (This one's interesting 'cause there's no button-phone and there's no computer; just stacks of paper.) -Shot of Joan Jett just sorta' hanging out. (Rock!) At the opening in L.A., Gruen walked my little sister through his prints, and he was genuinely thrilled to share his stories. It makes me like his work even more to know that he's a genuinely nice guy. You can just tell that he loves life and that he loves his work. Anywho, It's a great show and it's free to wander 'round! Hey, you might even find something to hang above your guitar case. (P.S. I secretly hope that Morrison Gallery will some day hold a retrospective of Pat Graham's work! There's a new reason not to be too depressed about CBGBs disappearing...next door to the former rock club-turned John Varvatos shop is a new outpost of the Morrison Hotel Gallery, a rock'n'roll photo gallery, and it's essentially a rock'n'roll museum, without a ticket charge. This gallery is a bazillion times bigger than its SoHo cousin too, which makes for a good half hour or more of browsing. (The prices are still the same though--$350 for an 8x10 b&w rock photo...but it's free to browse! In fact the staff encourages it) I noticed this place open up a few months back and pass it nearly every day walking up the Bowery. I'd never set foot inside. Now, I'll be back for every new exhibition they have--and it's open till 9pm on the weekends so it makes a great pre-dinner destination. Now showing is a massive, almost encyclopedic show by rock photographer Bob Gruen. You know the photo of John Lennon on a rooftop with shades and a "New York City" shirt? He took that one...and it turns out he took a lot of other pics you'll recognize too! There are fabulous pics here of drug-addled rockers from CBGBs' prime--Richard Hell, the Ramones, the Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Television. There's a beautiful shot of the Ramones on the G train, guitars in shopping bags on the way to a gig in the city. I stared at that one for a long time, it was such a beauty. There are other great shots of David Bowie hanging out with various bands in Max's Kansas City, a bizarre shot of Lou Reed with a nearly shaved head and a stray-cats-like outfit, a shot of Dylan swigging from a jug of wine onstage before a show in '74, and some great shots of Debbie Harry, including one of her crawling from the wreckage of a flipped car. These are truly great photos. Gruen spent a lot of time with John & Yoko and the Rolling Stones--there are many shots of them. It's really a pleasure to come in here and spend some time sifting through rock'n'roll history. And it's all free. In the center of the gallery there's something special that reminded me (and may remind you) of my boyhood rock dreams--it's a three-walled recreation of a young kid's rock'n'roll bedroom, photos and magazine covers plastered all over the walls...sit down on the bed and take it all in, you'll feel like you're 14 all over again! read more
