We absolutely loved our stop at Moreno's. We were spending the day at starved rock national park and wanted to find a fun place to eat along the way. It was actually about 20 minutes outside of our path, but it was well worth it! The Decor was so fun and reminded me of an episode right out of the Andy Griffith show. The food was absolutely amazing. Comfort food all the way! And the incredibly kind owner sent us away with cucumbers fresh from her garden. Wonderful experience... Took my Mom and four other family members for a Mother's Day breakfast. Easily the worst breakfast we've ever had. They even screwed up the coffee. How do you make undrinkable coffee? They did. The food was cooked by an older lady, and it was as if this meal was prepared by a person who has never cooked a meal in their entire life. Service was awful. Food was awful. I moved to, admittedly "B.F.E" (ie. the middle of nowhere) and was thrilled to try this charming cafe in the nearby town. In an unfortunate world where most "mom and pop" restaurants have turned to hermetically sealed bags of chicken noodle soup or roast beef from big food distributors or Costco, Moreno's is like a breath of fresh air. There are a few of the commonplace menu selections that can be found in about every place in downstate IL (fried cheese appetizers, frozen pizza) BUT, aside from that: EXCELLENT and extensive choice daily specials, all of which I have tried so far were made from scratch. Daily selections of HOMEMADE PIE One of the best ITALIAN BEEFS I've ever eaten - you will not find Italian beef this good in very many places outside of the city. Absolutely top-notch. The owner is always in the place, a congenial, lovely woman who shares her Italian heritage in many of her specials and know the fine art of connecting with her customers. She always makes it a point to chat with us when we come in. The waitstaff is always attentive and very nice to deal with. If you happen to be in this neck of the woods, perhaps making a Chicago to Peoria jaunt, it's worth travelling 5 minutes off the highway to get some great food and a dose of small town hospitality. read more

We love having this cafe near our home. The food is always fresh and home made. The pricing is amazing considering the high quality home made food. We normally spend more at a fast food restaurant to feed four. They do everything on the menu well. Very thankful for Moreno's! read more

Totally unimpressed. Ordered Italian French toast which is supposed to have raisins, coconut, caramel etc on it. She brought me plain French toast. I asked her nicely for what I had ordered and she told me they don't make it when they are busy. Never bothered to tell me that when I ordered. Would have ordered something else as I don't like syrup and the Italian one had a caramel sauce so syrup wouldn't have been needed. Also very dirty, gave us wrong change, no apology whatsoever for the wrong food. Just kind of annoyed. read more

Wow! What a wonderful and tasty experience. On way home from Peoria, I stopped in for lunch. The owner Linda greeted me immediately from the table she was sitting and was cutting apples to make their fresh apple sauce. So much of what they offer is homemade- including the ham and bean soup and ridiculously good corn bread. It was fried chicken special day, so I went for that. A terrific batter, nice and crunchy, and not greasy. The apple sauce was soooo good and so was the homemade cole slaw. I was too full for dessert their, but got some peach cobbler to go. I'm so glad I did. It was a nice treat with some coffee later that night. Looking forward to my next trip to Peoria, or maybe just a weekend drive, to try others things on the menu. read more

Randomly found this place on the way to Peoria from Wisconsin. Wow.. what a hidden gem! Loved it here. Super friendly and cozy, feel good atmosphere, great value and home cooked original menu items. Try the onion casserole! Now that's comfort food. Really liked the fish sandwich and homemade potato salad I had for lunch. They gave our little boy a side of homemade applesauce when we walked in too, how thoughtful! He devoured it. My wife got some cherry cobbler for dessert too. The owner really made us feel like welcome and appreciated guests. I can't remember the last time I felt so comfortable and "at home" in a restaurant. We will definitely look forward to our next visit! read more

What a hidden gem! On our way home, we were hoping to find a great breakfast place. Wow, what a find! We just happened upon this cute little restaurant. It was exactly what we had hoped for! First, the exterior caught our eye with it's beautiful flower planters flanking the doorway. The interior was warm and cozy with a wonderful hometown feel. The meals were so fresh and delicious! The portions were generous and the presentation was thoughtful. My blueberry pancakes were almost too pretty to eat. Our friendly waitress served dual roles as chef and server. She wonderfully prepared and served our meals in a timely manner. We highly recommend!!! read more

This place is a gem. We went b/c we had a coupon and are always up for trying something new. It's a small place with a lot of character. My husband and I each had a cup of the homemade cream of asparagus soup and it was absolutely delicious. It's obviously homemade and fresh. My husband had the Italian beef sub and it was huge and yummy, if a tad salty. I had the pork tenderloin and it was delicious, one of the best I have had. It was obviously homemade and very large (and I chose the small portion so I can only imagine what the large one was like!). My daughter had a pancake and sausage and it was very good and well cooked, my son had a pork tenderloin like me and he cleaned his plate. The staff was VERY friendly and accommodating and the owner came over and welcomed us as well. I would definitely recommend the food here as well as the down home atmosphere. Thinking about going here this Sunday is it worth it or should I go someplace else? I have heard the food is not good.

My comment is not so much about the restaurant or the owner. My remark is about the morning server, a petite blonde, who has always served us with a great abundance of charm & attention for which we have always tipped generously. Unfortunately we encountered her at the Granville BP station where she was asked politely to move her car up some so we could pull up our car to the gas pump she was partially blocking behind her. Her response was a snarling "LAZY!" in a loud voice, after which she did pull her car forward. I write to let this young woman know that while Moreno's is a fine diner, we will be sure to avoid going there so as to never give her our gratuities ever again. As a former worker with people of all sorts, I can only recommend to her to learn to recognize the faces of the clients you serve as well as the faces on the paper bills you so readily accept as tips. How you behave outside of your workplace reflects back on you as well as the establishment at which you work. We all have bad days, but if you work with the public, you had better learn to grow up & behave like an adult. As I said, we ALL have bad days; we just don't need to take it out on others, the people we depend on for $$$. We won't be seeing this woman again, hopefully, & she won't be pocketing our gratuities. We will be sure to pass this info on to others in the area. Your behavior is what people judge you by. read more
