    Baked Potted Eggs

Brisbane! You just keep surprising me don't you? Whilst being the area at the 'Gabba for a charity fitness event for the MND & Me Foundation, my workmates and I were hungry for tasty and filling feed post workout which would sit and cater for a large group. At first glance when we arrived at Moose and Gibson, we felt out of place a little bit underdressed as we were kitted out in our swanky (albeit sweaty) matching corporate workout garb in comparison to the hipster and stylish vibe that the Café presents. However, within minutes we were made to feel welcome by the staff and an appropriate sized area was cleared for us whilst we were left to peruse the ample and delightful breakfast menu and a drinks order was taken. The coffees are made well and if you dare to order a mug - you'll be in store for massive serve. I after much debate over the menu items decided to go for the Baked Potted Eggs, let me tell you I was not disappointed. The eggs were cooked to perfection with a great combination of chorizo (my fave!), tomato, spinach and herbs to season with a delicious side of brioche bread that could be topped off with a truffle (omg, yes) butter! Presentation of the dish was also top notch (see my 'Jamie/Donna-esque' pic). From a group perspective, all of the dishes were well enjoyed and all came out within timely - which was a godsend for the hungry troops esp the Mad Moose Dish if your belly is especially rumbling post wake up. Overall would definitely recommend this restaurant onto friends and colleagues for Breakfast - great vibe and tasty treasures in an unassuming location.

    Breakfast burger special

I've got to be honest here, it took three visits for me to finally understand what the Moose and Gibson hype was about. Previously I had found the joint to be fairly mediocre. Having ordered first the eggs on toast and second the avo special. I can't honestly say I walked away feeling the moose was any more special than my kitchen at home! However! Yesterday I visited the place again and it felt like a whole new establishment, the vibe was vastly improved, the staff seemed happier, the service was better, the coffee was the best thing since 1989 and the food came out in record timing and was absolutely delicious!! We both ordered the breakfast burger special - bacon, egg, haloumi, avocado, hash brown and a tomato relish absolutely hit the spot! If this is what the moose and Gibson vibe is really about that I'm glad it's three times a charm!

Portion size way too small for what you pay for

I'm about to go to town on this - keep reading if you want to know the details. The wait was excruciating, waited a good 15mins before the wait staff even acknowledged we wanted to order. Coffee was good. The 'lychee mint coconut' frappe was not. Tasted like ice and mint leaves. I ordered the coconut pancakes. My mate order the chorizo something. Anyway, the photo attached is my pancakes with a gocard for reference - tiny. The 'coconut' pancakes were also very flour-ly. "Wow omg caramelized banana and some ### nuts. Much original!" Is what I would say if I were surprised. However as you could tell so far, I was far from it. The chorizo something also looked and tasted pretty ordinary, considering were waited 30 mins for these meals. The back of house felt way to small for the front of house requirements. The chefs are probably brilliantly capable however I feel they were just pumping out food to keep the masses happy. My bill came to $27 for one coffee, pancakes and a frappe - with a dash of waiting and being ignored. tldr - coffee is good, kitchen too small, staff too busy and food is over priced and boring (cooked well but the recipes need some larger inspiration) And this is why this place gets stars. My baked eggs with blood plum vinegar. Not bad.

A nice little cafe with lovely decor and flowers on each table. It has a great renovated basement feel with reasonable service and several brunch selections. I liked my baked eggs and coffee however nothing amazing. The eggs were cooked nicely with a fully cooked exterior and runny middle and it included several pieces of chorizo, spinach and beans. It came with some lovely fresh Turkish and some blood plum balsamic sitting in a lighter vinegar however I don't know what that added to the dish or how it was meant to work so I just dunked my bread in it. There was free chilli sauce on the table and salt/pepper grinders which were appreciated - I did need them. The coffee was fine if a touch small, and I had seen an Instagram post about hot salted caramel mocha for a limited time on the menu - 3 weeks later and not even halfway into winter the waitress didn't know anything about it and after a few attempts told me it wasn't available any longer. Overall a nice place and the food not bad but flavours weren't anything you would rush back for.

M&G is a cute spot in Woolloongabba off the main Stanley St strip of restaurants and shops with a lovely spacious but welcoming feel. I had the opportunity to sample their new breakfast menu recently and then went back for a re-visit on my own. While it was all nice, there was nothing outstanding about it and I had questionable service during my re-visit. After re-vamping what used to be an interesting menu, I'm a little disappointed to see that it's lost some of that uniqueness. That's not to say that it's all just Smashed Avo and eggs on toast (although they have that still!) but it's not quite still there. During my menu sampling, I tried the Breakfast Burrito which includes chipotle baked beans, crispy smoked speck, rocket, scrambled eggs and avocado on a gluten-free wrap ($15.9) - note that I said 'on a' instead of 'wrapped up in' as that's how it's plated making eating it difficult unless you just go hands-in and wrap it up yourself. The ingredients however are nice and I love that it's a gluten-free option (although the wrap is a tad dry) but it didn't blow my mind. M&G are known for their Baked Potted Eggs which are eggs baked in a rich herb tomato sauce with large chunks of locally made chorizo with olive tapenade and baby spinach, served with toasted Turkish bread and blood plum balsamic ($18.9). The general consensus of the table was that they were delicious but salty and you would have to be a big chorizo fan to get through the generous amount, plus a few extra pieces of the toast wouldn't have gone astray as there was plenty of that delicious sauce to mop up. But that's all personal preference and I know that they're hugely popular! On my return visit, I showed up on a weekday morning to a relatively full cafe and hovered for a few minutes around the 'Please Wait to be Seated' sign but after no one appearing or acknowledging me, I sat down at one of the front benches. After waiting some time and no one appearing, I asked the barista if it was table or counter service...he replied table and sent a waitress over to me. After sweetly asking if I'd like some coffee, I asked for a menu and water which she did bring. After perusing the menu for some time and no waitress, I chose to order at the counter instead as I was in a bit of a hurry. The waiter at the register was very friendly and it transpired that it was the waitress' first day. I had the Avocado on Sourdough with persian fetta and lemon oil ($9.9) plus a side of mushrooms (+$4) and on gluten-free bread (+$2). I also ordered a long black with a side of milk. The food didn't take long and was nicely presented on the plate with the gluten-free option being English muffins, which was a nice change from the usual small thin sandwich slices! I was disappointed to see only four small Swiss Brown mushrooms on the plate and the amount avocado slices looked a little minimal but honestly once I spread them on the muffins there was clearly plenty of it and the feta. The mushrooms were sauteed nicely but I still think not the best value given that all of the other sides like haloumi and bacon are the same price, although they may be small serves too. My long black arrived a little later and was an excellent brew on Seven Seeds beans. Overall I was satisfied with my meal but underwhelmed, meaning I'm probably not going to rush back here when there are so many other great options around. Not to say that the food here is bad - it's not - and they are very open to feedback which I really appreciate but there are a few things stopping it from excelling for me and also I just look for a different type of breakfast usually. There is street parking available around and it's quite easy to ride to, if cycling is your thing. I'd recommend not sitting out the front in the morning at this time of year as it can get very sunny!

    Buttermilk pancakes

Reading previous reviews I'm unsure if service has improved dramatically, or it was a quiet day for them during their breakfast to lunch change over. It's beautifully decorated and a well thought out design. If I had some beautiful studio apartment, I'd want it to be kitted out with the same semi vintage wares and greenery it has. When we sat down the waitress bought over water and gave us menus. I was hard pressed to choose between items. As a vego that's a rarity on a mostly bacon filled menu. We ordered buttermilk pancakes and the spiced labna with gingernut crumble. It perhaps could have used a little more spice and a sweet sauce or simply maple syrup over the top but it was lovely. Coffee was very Brisbane standard. Not a lot to rave about but wasn't burnt. I'll go again for the food and ambiance.

Instead, I saw the sign for Bean, and having passed it several times, I thought, hey, why not walk through this shady looking garage and dumpster (looked like one) and see what's up? I was just looking for a cuppa to-go, but was rather tempted to plant myself and look around. The cafe isn't big, but there is a good amount of table space, either to study at or to play the many board games that this place houses! I was quite pleased at their game selection of Cluedo, Scrabble, Jenga, and more! This is also one of the few cafes in Brisbane that provide free wi-fi. So much win! As for the coffee, I've only had their skinny latte, which I do enjoy. For Brisbane, it is definitely good - a bit bold, but not overly dark, like I find the places around here. The coffee has a bit of a fruity or nutty aftertaste - I can't quite tell (must have it again!), but I would definitely have it again. I wasn't sure if they had food to offer, as I only saw some cupcakes on display, but it looked like they might serve sandwiches... Alleyway cafes seem to be very characteristic of Brisbane's hip cafes, and although my friends know me to always find these places with shady entrances, quite a few of them turn out to be good, if not intriguing! I'm sure there'll be more over time. There's a few alternative music magazines on a table for reading. As a fan of hardcore music, I like this place a lot down to the graffitied walls and pin-up art. Death Before Decaf is the latest addition, located on Brunswick Street New Farm, open for about 1 week. The name describes how I feel and react when I hear people order "Decaf". Seriously? It's like ordering chocolate, and asking don't add the chocolate. Death Before Decaf is the kind of place Brisbane needs, because its open 24/7, and we don't too have many places, if any, open for the long haul to service the needs of an ever demanding caffeine addicted public. The décor is edgy, with a twist of tattoo, punk, metal, street, and some cool graffiti-esque artwork on the wall. The vinyl, posters of hardcore metal, skateboards adorning the wall, all add to their rockstar feel. The comfortable leather couch and deer head on the wall seems out of place and more at home at a venue like Alfred & Constance, but I like the over-all aesthetics of the place. They serve Bellissimo Coffee (The Ultimo), which I actually drink at home too, so I do like the coffee. Due to the limited seating available, this place works well for take-away coffees, and at $3.50 for a small sized cup, is well worth it. Hardcore heavy-metal music isn't my thing, but I'm still a fan of Death Before Decaf.
