D&W used to service transmissions for a small mechanic shop I worked at in Leelanau county, so I've seen them do over 40 transmissions in my short time as a mechanic. We never had a problem with any of their work! Not a single tranny, and I'd be willing to bet that's the norm for Wayne and the D&W crew. So now, when the trans in my plow truck finally had had enough, I confidently took it to D&W. Wayne took me for a diagnostic cruise in my truck so he could explain what was happening and what would have to be done for repairs. It's always scary to walk blindly into a shop to get some work done, especially with my limited…read moreunderstanding of how cars work, and that's what I did here. The price for labor at Keystone is reasonable, especially compared with other shops in the Traverse City area. I was given an estimate for the repairs which they suspected I needed, but once they popped the hood, they found it wasn't quite as serious than they initially expected. Rather than make those repairs anyway, and charge me an extra hour of labor plus parts (which I've experienced before from a more dishonest, mainstream auto repair shop), they reduced the price from my estimate and made the correct repairs. Not only that, but they knew my situation was difficult, and that I needed to travel several hours by car that same evening, so they began the repairs immediately in order to get me on the road before the shop closed rather than the next morning. All around a good experience and an honest mechanic, and I will return the next time my vehicle inevitably needs work.

An hour before he's supposed to be there he texts that his daughter is sick & he is starting to feel sick too & he will get a hold of me when he figures out his schedule. 3 days goes by with nothing, I text him finally to find out what's going on & that I'm probably going to have to find a real mechanic to do the work & he says he won't be able to work on my car because life overwhelmed him this past week/weekend. One had 4wd problems & one shop here in Harrison was quoting $1000 before they even started. These did a complete exam & charged me less than $100 to fix a simple repair. The other truck was a different story, I just had a truck rebuilt & had spent big money from front to back rebuilds. The rear diff was going bad & I knew it was gonna cost me. Looked around & was getting prices around $2000 and that was on putting a used one in from a junkyard. Took it to these guys & got the whole thing rebuilt for less than a grand. Also my rebuilt engine was springing all kinds of leaks including a rear main seal . The place I had the work done was in the Detroit area. Knowing they didn't do a great job the first time & already taking it back twice, I called Lake to see what they could do. As always, he took great care of me , actually replaced almost every gasket in the engine & fixed it right the first time. I work in an auto parts store, so I deal with shops everyday. One thing I can tell you, if you can find a good shop that isn't looking to over charge you, your lucky. Not only do they guys charge a better than fair rate, their work is top notch . They replaced the spark plugs, but during that process they damaged the valve covers. About 10 months later, the damage led to an oil leak. I had my trusted mechanic downstate look at it, and he told me the valve covers had clearly been damaged during that original service and recommended I request a refund. April 2026: I returned to the shop and showed the owner, Diana, the faulty parts. At that time, she acknowledged the issue and said she believed we deserved some money back for the mistake. May 2026: When we followed up, we spoke with Pat (the owner), and the conversation went completely differently. Pat immediately became confrontational and started yelling, saying he "don't give refund checks." Instead, he expected us to drive the truck 250 miles--while it's leaking oil--so he could fix the problem he created himself. The attitude and lack of professionalism were honestly shocking. Mistakes can happen, but how a business handles them matters. Between the poor workmanship and the way we were treated afterward, I would not recommend this shop.
