This used to be one of my favorite stores in the area. NOT ANYMORE! Upon arrival the door was locked and you have to knock to get in. They then locked us in. We were told that masks and hand sanitizer was required, as if we were carriers of a deadly disease. We are in perfect health, but I acquiesced. Then we got the rundown of the store rules. 2 baskets, one for keep, one for things we touched and didn't want. I didnt want the baskets, but was told they are required. (Side note, it has been proven that C19 does not transmit on surfaces.) We were followed around the store as if my children and I were convicted shoplifters. My 9 year old son had to go to the bathroom. I was told they don't allow patrons to use their bathroom. We left disgusted and will never return. The women that run this store are so full of fear and negative energy that I don't recommend this store for anyone. Kinda surprising for a place that sells such wonderful spiritual goods. Save the trouble and go elsewhere. read more

I love visiting metaphysical stores for crystals but this is one I'll NEVER go back to. I visited here for the second time back in April, first of all they make you leave your purse behind the counter which is fine. Their store their rules, but not having a purse still won't stop them from following you around the store. As a Black woman we all know the stereotype that "Black people steal" and this place makes sure to let you know that they whole heartedly believe that. They'll have associates follow you around asking you if you need help every 5 minutes. It's not because they want to help you but because they want to keep an eye on you. After I told her on three different occasions that I didn't need any help I decided to grab what I needed to check out. When I got to the counter another girl came up to the cashier with a list, everything that I had in my hand was written down on that list. Meaning that I was followed around and everything that I picked up was documented before I even got to the counter. I should've left once I saw that but I ended up buying the items but will NEVER return to this place again. To be a spiritual/new age store this place does not give off welcoming energy. Sucks because they have one of the best selections of stones in the Pittsburgh area, but not worth being followed and tracked like a criminal. You wouldn't think you'd find such an Aquarian, Lemurian, Atlantean, Californian (?) place like this in the South Hills. The owner refers to herself as "Minister of the Mystic." Oooh... I had fun lurking around this store and uncovering everything from tarot cards, stones, figurines of mythical beings, and crystal daggers (!) to oils, candles, jewelry, and even gag gifts. While we're on the subject of gag gifts, if you're a conservative, ya might wanna stay out of here. You will be offended and deservedly so. Yeah, neat little establishment, and there's something around every corner. Just when you think you've seen everything, there's a hallway, a flight of stairs, and suddenly you come upon more treasures. However, I think the main draw is really Bahloo the cat. Or should it be spelled "Ballou" like the film "Cat Ballou?" Anyway, just like Zack the Maine Coon of Weldin's Wishes in Downtown Pittsburgh (are they still in business?), Bahloo is a permanent resident (guardian? familiar?) of Moonstones, and he is as friendly and mellow a cat as you'll ever find rubbing against your ankles. I'm told he has a fan club, and I'm sure he knows it and demands a percentage of the store profits. I was told that moonstones moved and wanted to give them another shot. Due to the pandemic, a lot of rules changed, including the ability to hold onto personal belongings. The staff was extremely helpful and professional. All of their rules were clearly discussed and very fair. Their products were lovely and I really enjoyed my time shopping there. read more

I walked by this place and decided to look around. This is a fun store filled with ehtherel objects and jewelry, gems, art objects, books and candles. The first floor has tons of jewelry and rings, so if that's what you want, you've found it. Another floor has tons of gems and stones and oils. I decided to buy some stones to help protect from bad luck. So far they seem to be working! The staff was friendly and helpful and helped me understand the spiritual side to the things that I was interested in. A fun store to browse! They moved from Dormont to Castle Shannon; the store is bigger, very well organized, and the team can now handle multiple spots to help out numerous customers at once! Amazing staff that treats you like family. Very knowledgeable. Various events occur, and Tarot is still offered (sign ups). Many people in the past were concerned about the "purse behind the counter" policy of the previous Dormont location... They are trying to not need to do that with the new location in Castle Shannon. If people were bothered by that, I'd say try checking out the new location and see what you think of the new spot! With the current situation of COVID-19, I'm not sure when they will be physically open... I have been wanting to visit this store since I moved to Dormont two years ago. I like funky stuff and I finally convinced my boyfriend to tag along with me. I figured Small Business Saturday was as good a time as any to check it out. I immediately regretted my decision when I opened the door to the store. I was quickly asked by the (owner?) to put my purse behind the counter. Not my book bag or gym bag, or even shopping bags, but my purse. This very much concerned me because who is to say that she will not get asked a question and go help someone in another part of the store and leave my bag unattended? Whose to say that she won't give someone else the wrong bag? This made me highly uncomfortable and I wish I would have just left the store right then. The store is quite large and there's a lot to look at, but most of it was my opinion more of a junky variety of items that you'd find on Ebay or in dollar bins in Chinatown. There were some cool oils and novelty items, but they are just too expensive and are already being used in the store (a cool Buddha desk lamp I was looking at was powered on and was all smudged with fingerprints). If you are that concerned with people stealing, then reorganize the store or hire more associates. Don't ask people to just hand over their purse! I feel like she wouldn't ask a little old lady to give her her purse, and so it made me feel like I looked a certain way to her, which couldn't be farther from the truth as I am just fine financially and have no problem shopping till I drop on some cool/interesting stuff. Just definitely not at this store! The only good thing was the store's cat. I will not be back. read more

I wanted to love this shop. I really did. Made my first (and last) trip here a week ago. Walked in and browsed for about a minute before this nice girl approached and asked if I needed help. I told her I was interested in the larger crystals. Girl: "Okay. Can I take your purse and hold it behind the counter?" Me: Blank look on my face as I try to process what she has said. For six years now I have been threatening to purchase a salt lamp for my bedside table. The early spring and late summer when I'm using allergy medication like a fish uses water, I thought a little natural relief while I sleep would help alleviate the morning sneezing fits. I got one here for an Amazon price of relatively cheap. I also bought some healing stones and crystals. She also carries some impressive jewelry and stones that can be set in necklaces and brackets. The place is huge, and just when you think you've seen everything, you can walk down a hew hallway and find more things. Great little shop that reminds me of a shop in a Stephen King novel called Needful Things. Although that shop was owned by Satan and made his customers do unspeakable things to each other, this is far from that. But you do get the feeling here that we are not alone and there are other realms to our world. Books galore on the occult, spirit worlds, shadow people, how to rid your home of evil spirits and I just wish she wasn't closing the store when I was walking in. She was nice enough to stay open until I purchased my salt lamp. I'll return and get my fill of this place and look around for four or five hours. read more

I was excited to come to this store when I moved to the neighborhood because I LOVE stores like this. Not a fantastic selection but pretty decent. The merchandise is weirdly organized. I go in today after picking up a few groceries and they tell me that they need to hold my purse and my bad of groceries. Which sure, I guess that's ok. My problem is I feel like I was targeted. There was another woman with her purse and they didn't ask her to hold her stuff. There was something I wanted to buy but I ended up leaving after a few minutes of half hearted browsing. To the owner of this cute little shop - I pass your little shop twice a day on my way to and from work and was super excited to finally get the chance to go in and purchase some items I have seen through the windows as well as other potential items I may have found. As I entered the shop, I was asked to leave my purse at the counter. Check my purse, yes, but leave my purse with complete strangers? I don't think so. I am entitled not to be made to feel as a potential thief before I've even made it through the doors. I work in the industry as well and know that before you can accuse someone of stealing, you'd better know for sure that they have pocketed or stolen something or you can face a potential lawsuit. While I understand as a company, you are entitled to your policies and this may be your way of avoiding potential thieves, I am entitled to shop where I can hold onto my wallet with which carries the money I would have spent in your store today. read more

I have to say, as far "new age bookstores" go, this one is the most impressive shop I have had the privilege to visit thus far. Moonstones is deceptively small looking from the outside, but on the inside there are as many things to see as there are spiritual paths. After years of searching, I found a pendulum! I was so surprised to find the unassuming tiny metal acorn literally jump at me! I had assumed that what I needed would be an ornate crystal pendulum, but "great things come in small packages". After I took it home it took no time to get acquainted with it. The store contains many crystals, gems, jewelry, oils, and even jars of dried herbs. There were around 60 different bumper stickers to chooses from. And hard to find matchstick incense. It is exactly what you think, a match you strike that burns as incense. Speaking of which, I was disappointed to not find any "pick your own" incense sticks. My supply is quite depleted, and I need more. I did but a very dainty scarf from the selection of hats and clothing on the top most floor of the labyrinth. I hope to attend one of the interesting classes that I have seen mentioned. It does appear that the list needs to be updated. I also LOVE how the shopkeepers don't keep a hawk's eyes on you. Instead they allow you to spend your time browsing the merchandise alone. After all, it is difficult to hear a small voice when an item is calling out to you if you are anxious from unwelcome stares. read more

Occult bookstores run tha gamut from dark, dusty and creepy, to bright, airy and pleasant. Moonstones is definitely one of the latter. If one was only looking for books, I'd say the store was disorganized, but only because there are small clusters of books to be found all over the store. The extensive collection of birthstone jewelry is amazing, even for one NOT interested in mystical themes. The incense and candles were very neat and orderly, unlike many stores I've been to, not just the occult-type. There was a fairly decent collection of crystals and other esoteric supplies. I have made many excuses for why I haven't taken the trip out to Moonstones before, but never again. I absolutely LOVE this store and can't wait to have reason to go there again. read more

Walking into this place is like walking into another world. It smells amazing and is almost visually overwhelming at first. So many beautiful stones and lots of unique merchandise! I've only visited once so far, but my experience was wonderful. I was repeatedly asked if I needed any help. (But only when I was obviously confused - so they are clearly observant of their customers.) They were quick to lend assistance or advice when I had a question. And I just adore the beautiful watermelon tourmaline I bought! The resident cat is a bonus. Such a sweetheart! read more

Moonstones is a real treat for me! I feel so energized after going there. The staff is always very helpful but not overly so. They have a super Collection of crystals and amazing pieces of jewelry! I have shopped there for years and feel so grateful that the store is there. We don't have lots of places so cool to shop in Pittsburgh for crystals especially! They do have a strict bag policy upon entering the store. It has never bothered me, I just don't take it personal. I've been shopping at Moonstones ever since they first opened. I have always loved Bahloo the kitty who walks me around the shop like he's showing me new items when he's around. Brightens your day as soon as you enter the store. I tend to feel lighter when doing so i've always loved the atmosphere of this store. They have everything for my magickal needs. Incense, candles,herbs, stones, books, jewlery,drums, stickers, art, figures, crysal balls, skrying mirrors, etc. Anything and everything you could use for your spiritual needs. The employees are very imformative and helpful when need be and let you do your own roaming around without an eye over your shoulder every 5 mins which is nice. For anyone looking for something different in the Dormont area this is the place to stop. Looks can be deceiving on the outside, once you enter there are multiple rooms and a little upstair area of clothes. Moonstones first location was up the street where Sugar Cafe was, well when i was younger it used to be Potomac Furniture and my mother was the cleaning lady for that furnitue store for 12 years. So as a child i would play in the front window displays and amoung the furniture throughout the store. So when Moonstones first moved into that building it was kind of neat for me to step back into the building i once new as a child. I do like their new location now on the corner or West liberty and Potomac. read more

Beautiful, natural products! It's hard to leave and hard not to buy it all! In fact, I no longer live in Dormont but still visit MS when i come to town. The staff is knowledgeable and always helpful when I've visited. It a great mini-community. They carry clothes, jewelry, and various religious items. They have a bumper sticker display that has hilarious sayings. Due to all the tiny items they ask for you to hand in your bags. So if you don't like the policy, I recommend leaving your bag in your car. Some stupid people have taken advantage of this lovely store (and other local stores), one should not take this policy personally. read more

Fantastic little shop that has a bit of everything. I've been there several times and the staff has always been helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. I've bought a gorgeous tarot deck, a load of stones and some incense as well. Some things are pricey but it's a small business, what do you expect? Speaking of expectations, the purse/bag policy is really minor despite what some of the reviews say. Is the secret to immortality in these peoples' bags that makes them sooooo upset about giving them up? For crying outloud?! Again it's a small business! They probably can't afford to take losses via thievery. Don't take it personal. Ignore the whiners and just take your wallet out of your bag and keep it pushin'. They give you a number that is identical to the one they put on your bag so it won't be given to the wrong person. The vibe is super chill to the point that I've gone in just to relax and browse. Quite frankly the folks saying there is a funky or negative vibe seem suspect to me. If you're devil determined to be mad about a reasonable policy no amount of stones, incense, reiki, or anything else is gonna fix it. For those sensitive to crystals this place is the bomb. Just wanted to update for 2020. Since the shop has moved to it's new location, they no longer require you to leave your purse with them or follow you around. I think because of the multiple levels in the old shop, they felt it necessary to monitor shoppers at that time and never had a problem with complying. I've had only good experiences at Moonstones. This place is super cute. The staff is really friendly, and they have a great selection, but they always seem to be out of candles :( I happened by here on the advice of a friend, and she couldn't have been more right. I spent a lot of time just wandering around browsing and walked away with quite a booty for the price. The selection of crystals and jewelry is unmatched in Pittsburgh. I would like to see a larger book & and tarot selection though. The staff is great, and they aren't overbearing, but really helpful and friendly if you have a question. First time visiting the store because we arent from the area. When you walk in the door they check your purse at the counter, which made me very nervous but i did as they asked. The store has a great vibe until we walked in the door and are approached by a very suspicious clerk requesting that my wife check her purse. No problem for us until I suggested that my wife take her money out. The clerk assumed that I was suggesting that she would steal from my wife's purse. My thought was she would need her money in case she wanted to make a purchase. Very suspicious clerk made us feel very unwelcome. We bought a few things and left promptly.
