We called from the middle of farmland while we were on our way because we were fearful we would miss the opportunity to eat here. But thankfully, the wonderful woman who answered the phone took our grill order and when we got there, it was waiting for us. Their place is in the middle of nowhere, and the menu is fairly simple, but it's always crowded with a line out the door. No indoor seating either, so come prepared if it's a hot day. But the servers are always kind and friendly, and the burgers are delicious! My recommendation is to start small and work up if you're hungry: the burger patties are surprisingly thick, and I've seen several people struggle through the infamous quadburger (four patties). We really enjoy going to this burger joint in the middle of the country. Great burgers and pork burgers, they have a lot of old type sodas and different flavors. Have a variety of chips to. I believe they have ham and cheese sandwiches and a couple of other items also. I have seen a lot of jeep runs there, poker runs with motorcycles, tour buses stopping in. Moonshine is what it is. Period. You can get excellent cheeseburgers. If you want gourmet, then don't even bother trying to find the place. The Moonshine Country Store is exactly what it says it is. It is an old country store. There are novelties everywhere. Out of fashion signs say things like "Complaint Department, 100 miles to your right". The atmosphere is down home, unpretentious and very NOT fast paced. The bathrooms are port-a-potties across the road. There isn't indoor seating. There are some benches and a few chairs but these are for the people waiting to pick up the orders. There is ample room for seating outside. Plenty of picnic tables. Once in a while the tables do get full, but that is mostly during biker rally time, or on occasion a busy weekend day. It is true that the grill is turned off at 12:30 PM. There has only been one exception. During a biker rally one year (I think 2004) there were so many people already in line to order that one of the owners came out and said that everyone currently in line would get fed. The grill stayed open until 1:15 that day. Speaking of the owners/staff; there are about 6 employees. They do this every day and they have for years. Very very nice people. Burgers, chips and bottled soda is what you get. Come for the experience, come back because you know what you are going to get. It is a great experience. read more

This place is owned by two older ladies who were part of the original family of the owners who started the place. All condiments are self serve at a stand outside. Few tips: 1. It is, I reiterate, in the middle of NOWHERE. If you have pretty much any cell service besides Verizon, you're SOL. Make sure you old school Mapquest/print your directions. 2. CASH ONLY. I'm not sure if there's an ATM on the premises even, now that I think about it. 3. No indoor seating. You will be sitting outdoors at picnic tables. There is no cover in case of rain. 4. This is a biker Mecca. Nothing wrong with that, but just a heads up. 5. The Moonshine Store has hats, t-shirts and other souvenir type items, no foods or other perishables for purchase. 6. It closes at 1230 SHARP. They WILL shut you down if you roll up one minute late. All in all, if you're ever in the area, or are an avid biker, this place is cool to check out. I made the drive to Moonshine, IL on Saturday. This place is about as far into the boonies as you can get, so make sure you've got your directions correct. My friend and I got there at about 11AM on what was -to my knowledge- a normal Saturday. No bike rally or group event. Just a normal Saturday. And there was easily a crowd of 200 people there. We parked and immediately got in line. It moved quickly, and once inside we were able to grab chips and a drink from the cooler. The line worked its way past a small display case of souvenirs, and during our 15 minute wait we had plenty of time to absorb all the kitsch of the interior of the store. We got around to the counter by the grills and it was time to order. There are maybe 20 items on the menu. More than I expected. We got two double bacon cheeseburgers as well as a pork burger for my friend and the special fried bologna for myself. Payment is on the honor system. Eventually you find yourself in front of the old proprietor at the cash register, and you simply tell her what you ordered and she charges you. Simple as that. We found a spot on one of the many picnic tables outside and waited impatiently for our names to be called. Upon retrieving our food, we stopped at the little table of condiments and dressed our sandwiches with the staples. Then we ate. The burgers: BIG. The patties are lumpy, asymmetrical, gigantic hunks of beef. And they're good. The bacon was crispy and the cheese was melted. The cheese, buns, and hell, even the beef are nothing to write home about. There didn't seem to be any secret recipes or carefully curated ingredients at work. But the burger in its entirety was heavenly. The fried bologna was ordered on a whim and consumed the same way. I paid 99% of my attention to the burger, and rightfully so, but the other sandwich was indeed very good. Maybe it was the long drive that ensured that I wouldn't be disappointed. I mean, what kind of idiot drives 2.5 hours for a cheeseburger and then doesn't find it amazing? Did I trick myself? Maybe you should try it for yourself and see if that's true, except that this place is in the middle of nowhere in the midst of the cornfields. The Moonshine store is a grocery store cum burger joint. The quaint little store is decorated with nostalgic collectibles and signs on the wall and it smells like hamburger when you step in. The menu is short and limited to a few varieties of hamburgers, chicken and pork sandwiches. Although hamburgers seem to be the most popular choice, I had my eyes on the bacon chicken sandwich. It was well seasoned but the store-bought bun was a little too soft for me. The red pepper relish and pepper mustard from the condiments table went well with it though. These are not fancy Iron Chef affectations. They are thick fried fresh beef patties with option of American cheese and/or double patties on store bought buns with do it yourself fresh tomatoes, lettuce and pickles on the side. No fries or onion rings, just choose a bag of chips and a canned or bottled drink (non-alcoholic). Eat outside on an old, many times painted picnic table in the midst of corn and soybean farms.
