This is EMA's second location with the original location being near Port Union and Lawrence. We decided to come to this location because it offered the adult class and the junior class at the same time which meant that my hubby and daughter could go to class together. What I love the most about EMA is the positive energy you feel the moment you walk into the school. Everyone greets you by your first name (which I find is incredibly amazing with the number of people that go through this place) with a firm hand shake and a bow. Children are definitely the main focus here and they are treated with respect and honesty by the staff and the teachers alike. And I find it impressive that they do not shy away from teaching discipline to kids that can sometimes become disruptive and unruly. We've also hosted my daughter's birthday party here and they offer a full service birthday party for the little ones where all you have to do is show up with a birthday child and enjoy the party with them without busying around trying to make sure that your guests are all taken care of. I can't say enough good things about EMA and I hope to remain an EMA family for a long time to come.

I continued even after my children quit and in November 2022 I got my black belt. Today, at the age of 55, I am in the best physical condition of my life, and it wouldn't have happened without EMA.

You should think of it more as a fitness class (that's what roughly 40 min of each class is devoted to) that teaches some self-defense techniques rather than a martial arts class, especially since it's located in a gym. Super sketchy when it comes to money though. The instructors will use high pressure sales tactics to get you to buy all the equipment through Dan, the owner, even if you're only interested in classes that don't require/need boxing gloves, thigh guards, etc. Really long lead time to cancel recurring billing (over thirty days) and no flexibility from Dan either. For your money, if you're not in the downtown core (and even if you are and can afford a longer travel time) go somewhere else.

I renewed my membership and then continued with private training sessions. I am the strongest I have ever been and feel and look pretty great (never thought I'd feel like this as a woman in my 40s with three kids). Dana is motivating and a fantastic teacher and trainer - she fine tunes and gives great prompts to assist with form and make sure the exercises are done properly and safely. In addition, my kids have trialed the jujitsu and gymnastics classes and loved them but couldn't continue due to their other activities, but from what I observed, Bobby is a knowledgeable, patient, and fun teacher. I went to the location near Yonge & Eglinton, expecting to see a dojo like in the pictures on their website (bright, airy, clean). I was disappointed to see that it was in a basement, the walls were dirty & had holes in them. The mats on the floor were also worn looking & dirty. We talked to Chris about classes, etc & he was very knowledgable, nice & friendly. But I was put off by the condition of the practise room. It was one room and a small room for doing martial arts. Which is probably why there are holes in the walls. We watched a class for about 30 minutes with about 8 guys in it. They seemed kind of cramped. I'm giving them a middle rating since I didn't actually take a class. But for the location I would give them less. They might want to invest in new mats or at least take some time to thoroughly clean them & repair the holes in the wall & repaint the walls. Seeing this place didn't make me want to take a class there. Sorry to say that but just my opinion.

He teaches in a way that's really accessible to beginners, while giving options to those more advanced. It's a pretty small and humble space, but the quality of instruction is definitely there. It's a really great way to learn practical self-defense techniques and I definitely recommend trying it out. The classes I've been to have skewed more male, but there's aways at least a few ladies and I feel like it's a very welcoming environment.

That's what I was first reminded of when I first signed up my son here. Master Kang and his instructors motivated the kids and cared about making them better. Shortly thereafter, my older son (who initially swore he had no interest in martial arts because they make you do push ups and doing the same thing over and over again was hard and annoying) asked to join his brother for classes. Being heavier set and having quit multiple other martial arts training before, we didn't expect him to last more than a month but we proceeded. In a couple of months, not only was he still taking classes with his brother but he is even more engaged to do so. His kick height has doubled where it was before, his confidence has increased, he's more respectful and he's pushing himself harder and I credit the instructors and Masters for this. Seeing both my kids' improvements, my husband and I decided to sign up and learn with our children and unlike what we initially feared, we feel quite at home and Master Kang gave us the opportunity to take part in something important to our kids which became important to us too. We now all challenge and encourage each other to do better and I can't say any other martial arts gym have ever had our entire family as engaged as Master Kang's! Try it for yourself!!
