Holland & Barrett was recently one of these time-warps and before I knew it, I'd spent 30 minutes browsing their, um, aisle. It's not a big location, but I found cleansing detox tea, flax seed, aloe vera supplements, granola bars, daily vitamins, protein powers and a decent selection of gluten free items that I never knew I needed so badly. H&B is a great little shop and it certainly did the cathartic trick for my health-food store craving.

Your run of the mill health-food, vitamins and supplements store…read more Quite wide selection of vitamins and protein shakes. There is also an organic foods section (lots of frozen offerings) in the back. When I was there they had a promotion, buy 1 get a second 1/2 off, though it was a bit confusing to know which items qualified---apparently protein bars do count! Service wasn't that helpful, I spent quite a bit of time looking at protein shakes and you would think someone would eventually ask to help, but sadly no. That said, I'd go back here mainly because of the selection and location. There are actually 2 Holland & Barrett's on upper street, so if you don't see what you are looking for at this location (near Angel) ask them to ring the store near the Highbury and Islington tube.

How did it all start? 1- saw an ad on the tube…read more2- called them and talked to a cheerful lady explaining the idea, checking what food I don't want to include in my diet, biometrics (I fell in love with the process as it doesn't involve going to a nutrition clinic where they will measure you and some stick thin woman will judge you and lecture you on healthy eating habits like carrots and celery whenever you feel hungry!!! who will feel full after eating raw vegetable!!!) ** so the highlight point was that they believed me when I gave them my biometrics over the phone 3- of course your card details and address 4- post my building entrance key 5- started received the 3 daily meals+ 2 snacks in a cool bag every day for a month with a leaflet every day explaining what you will be eating that day ** another good thing about them is that you don't have to stick to a minimum period - you can do as short as week on the down side though- meals are very small, I often found myself still hungry even after having the snack- but you have to exercise some self control if you want to see results and it is very pricey - I paid around £700 for the month 6- by the end of my month- I didn't lose any weight but felt good about myself 7- a week later I received letter detailing what i should do to maintain my weight and healthy eating regime - which was nice I would give it a 4 or even 4.5 if it was a bit cheaper but in general I am impressed with the idea and process

It's a small/medium sized store, which was previously located in Moorgate. I've bought slimming products, snack bars, vitamins, cereals, teas and, so far, everything I've needed has been available. They also have a small cooler section which I noticed stocks meat alternatives and a wall almost solely dedicated to body building supplements (frequented by many a city gent I might add!). It's worth popping in just for snacks as there's usually some sort of offer on and the price gram for gram is usually better than the small enticing packs you find near the counters of the nearby sandwich shops.

Yes, I am a bona fide health freak, a hangover from a youth spent at Steiner Schools surrounded by iridologists, naturopaths and alternative health freaks of countless other persuasions. As such I have tended to feel a little lost in Shoreditch. There being hundreds of places to buy a drink and not one purveyor of Milk Thistle, Vitamin B and Evening Primrose capsules. Just a few of my own personal drugs of choice. And so I've become acquainted with the Holland and Barrett store on the fringes of Leadenhall Market, this great British health food chain Mecca for the health conscious. Stocking a dizzying range of vitamins, minerals and supplements, a good variety of vegan, wheat/gluten free food and the kind of herbal teas that haven't quite hit the mainstream - i.e. Tesco - Holland and Barrett should sate even the most hard-core health fanatics and the staff are lovely to boot.

Thirdly, it's on my way back to the tube from the personal trainer who's getting me into shape. Well, a different shape from round I mean. Yes, as below, they could make 'em a little colder but I was at least offered ice the other day. Haven't experienced the carrot sludge problem yet but will keep an eye out.
