Overall a good place to go and see some animals. Unfortunately it gets super uncomfortable due to the heat and humidity so both you and the animals are looking for the shade. So you may not see as many animals as you want or they might be just lioning around (see what I did there?!?). They do offer night programs for separate charge. They offer both single and double strollers for rent for your kiddos if you didn't/don't want to bring one. They have a cup holder for the kiddo as well as pockets in the back for the adults to put stuff in there and the "roof" flap is a screen with option to unroll a solid piece to avoid too much sun getting through. read more

Lots of things around here could improve starting with attitudes. Next communication after the woman had already swiped our card, she informed us that the train was down and our baby was not tall enough to ride the scooter. They do not provide refunds even when they decide to tell you these things after being charged. Multiple animals were not in their habitat was a fat waste of money! All these things should be voiced before your card is swiped. read more

Fun day at the zoo. The zoo is plenty big enough. We were able to see tons of animals being active. Some of the enclosures seemed to need maintenance or are dated. It seemed like they were struggling with staffing. We did the skyline for $5 ea and totally worth it. Being able to look down on giraffe, zebra, and lions was a different and exciting view. There is a train, but we did not do that. You can get seeds on a stick for the parakeets/budgies to come land on your hand. The restrooms were clean and efficient. The restaurant/cafe food was good. The gift shop had updated and reasonably priced merchandise. I would visit again. read more

Probably one of the sadder zoos I've seen. A lot of the cages had signs saying animals where coming soon, or the displays where animals where actually in were small and so so unkept. The animals that were here looked sad overall. I think the giraffes were my favorite to see because you could pay to feed them and they were actually lively. As well as the parakeets. Though careful with the vending machine, we put the correct money in and it kept our money and didn't give us any food and off course nobody was there to help There was a train and sky train which both were no working. There were tons of spider webs and dusts in exhibits. Overall I would suggest skipping this zoo it's not worth the time or money. read more

It's worth going when you can come. The animals are well cared for, of course with this heatwave we've been having either coming early or later in the day might give you a better chance of seeing the animals when they're active. The sky lift is fun and gives you a great view of the zoo. The height requirement is a bit iffy, I still felt like I needed to hold on to my child for dear life. There aren't seatbelts on the ride. This summer my daughter participated in the summer camp. She was disappointed, out of the week long experience she enjoyed only 2.5 days out of 5. When it's 96 degrees and humid outside, I wasn't expecting many active animals but they were troopers! I saw more animals here than at larger city zoos. It's $16 for adults and $15 for military. I had iced water and if you have a fan mister, it might save the day. There's shade so I paced myself and moved as slow as the animals. There are a ton of benches but the ants believe we're invading their space and like to bite so I didn't sit for very long. If you can't last all day, here are the places I would be sure to hit. - Jaguars - Lions - Tiger - Stingray petting and feeding: go into the visitors center and pay $3 for feeding then go to the indoor stingray area - You can also pay $3 to feed the giraffe (by the cafe) I also liked watching the flamingos and emu. read more

Truly the saddest zoo. Half the exhibits were empty, the reptile house was incredibly disappointing (half empty with paper signs for the animals that were there, and FAKE plants in the terrariums). The restrooms were absolutely disgusting. All the animal exhibits had additional, new chain link fences a few feet out from them keeping zoo goers further away from them (I'm assuming there was vandalism or harming the animals in the recent past that inspired this). The sinage was extremely minimal and sometimes nonexistent. The train ride was surprisingly long and went around a large lake that the zoo appears to do absolutely nothing with. That seems like such a waste of natural resources and a whole ecosystem that could be used to educate. Most importantly, in my opinion, was the condition of the animals and the small spaces they have. Some of the animals looked like they had terrible skin conditions (the otters and buffalo especially). One of the largest spaces for animals to roam had 3 buffalo and some ducks. It would have been nice to see other animals in the same space. Overall, the entire zoo looks like it needs an overhaul to fix things, make exhibits safer for the animals and people wanting to learn more about them, and bring more animals in for zoo goers to see. I went for the Christmas lights. The staff was incredibly rude and the entire thing smelt like cat piss. Some of the lights were beautiful but it would be an 1000000000x more enjoyable thing if they got tolerable employees. The lady at the front (white, blonde, with glasses) acted like I was forcing her to work there. She also said that they don't do military discounts which was honestly crazy since there was a sign promoting military discounts...... all the money wasn't worth the hassle. read more

We enjoyed our visit to the Montgomery Zoo. We arrived early, and while the zoo didn't get terribly packed by the time we left (11:30 a.m.), arriving early allowed us to get two train rides in (toddler's orders, haha!). We spent 2.5 hours here and saw most of the animals: flamingos, sloth bear, pigmy rhinos, giraffes, buffalo, deer, black bear, alligators, and many more. We purchased many of the extras: feeding the parakeets, petting zoo feeding, feeding the giraffes, and the train ride. Our 2.5 year old LOVED feeding the giraffes and the train. These were worth the small fees for us. The parakeets and petting zoo? Not so much. The parakeet cove is a cute idea, but none of us got into it. We never made it to the petting zoo, so I can't comment on it. We had a quick bite to eat in the Overlook Cafe - average prices for an attraction eatery. A previous Yelper mentioned the zoo needed more signage, and I would agree. You're provided with a map, but even the map isn't the best. Would love to see better signage for navigating around. The only zoo I've been to in recent memory is Zoo Atlanta. For the size of the Montgomery Zoo and what it offers, the $15 ticket price is fair. If you're looking for a fun way to spend a few hours with a young child, I recommend a visit read more

Ok this is the 2nd time I have been here. Last time was July last year which I almost died in the heat walking around.......yet I decided to come back, at least at the end of Aug so I don't die of heat as much....yet this is a testament on how much I like this place....and how much I'm willing to sacrifice for my kid. After the above rant, if you are still reading then I have to say this place is really great money for value. The whole zoo has lots of lush green trees and hedges so plenty of shades to hide from the said sun above. My fav part is the parakeet cage near the entrance. We brought the two dollars bird feed from the machine and reanacted the scene like birds from Hitchcock ........a swamp of them birds landed on us and some pecked at our heads. Though lucky as we were none of them popped on us :D This is not a huge zoo, but good enough for me and my toddler. Any bigger we would have been way too tired. We also pet the goats lambs and there's a lama at the petting zoo. Though the feeding at the petting zoo was not as fun as the birds, as the goats were big bullies and none of the lambs dared to come near to be feed. Feeding the giraffe was cool too but it's really fenced. Last but not least, do yourself a favour and grab a frios popsicle locally made in Alabama. The key lime pie one is like a frozen pie! The price of $15 per person isn't bad, but you'll soon find out why it's so much lower than other zoos. There are no employees to guide you around the zoo and a severe lack of signs to point you in the correct direction of certain animals. Also, many things cost extra, such as feeding the giraffes, the skylift, and the train ride. Overall, this zoo definitely needs to schedule more than two employees per hour and invest in more than five small signs. read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE to go to zoos! This is a cute little zoo with lots of animals and a great pavilion to eat at. They have a fairly large playground and a few little picnic areas. I have the greatest time here. The Mann Wildlife Museum inside the zoo is pretty cool, if you like stuffed bears and fossils. They really had a lot of neat stuff. This zoo seems lacking in general animal cleanliness.The hippos had no water in the pool but it was littered with a lot of feces. The ruminants have no grassland,even the giraffe was trying for the very last dead leaf on a dead branch..The chimps were bored and solitary parrots were screaming. Did not see any enrichment activity. A number of the locations seemed to be missing the animals posted. Peacocks seemed to want the koi food.no attendants around.The zoo needs to be investigated!! We visit Montomery several times a year and enjoy taking grandson to the zoo. For first visit in 6 months, we paid to ride the train. Unfortunately visitors to the zoo are blatant violators of the mask and 6 ft distance policy. And the zoo staff made no attempt to encourage adherence to the stated zoo policy. We were the 1st seated on train and a family of unmasked adults and young teens proceed to sit immediately behind us. We mentioned the 6 foot distance and they laughed at us. I cannot actually rate the zoo because I was there at night time for the Ballet and the Beast but the zoo from what I could see was small. I'm looking forward to coming back and exploring since the weather has cooled off a lot. I've heard great things so once I get to go I'll be writing a proper review. The animals that were listed at the zoo definitely showed a wide variety and regardless of the small size of the zoo there are lots of animals to see. read more

We just left the zoo for Harry Potter night. $50 per person and we only stayed 1 1-2 hours. We and many others were surprised that we actually could not see any zoo animals at the zoo. We enjoyed the activities but would not recommend the zoo for this type of activity at night and at this price. We came from Columbus and will spend more time traveling then the visit. My children were disappointed not to see animals. And to pass the playground on the train and tell them that is closed too did not help. It was their 1st visit. However the volunteers did an excellent job and we enjoyed the animals which were display except the lady with the owl was not engaging at all. read more

Just rating the overlook cafe. Bring water with you if you visit this zoo! They force you to buy bottled water and they don't have water from the fountain. On top of that they have the audacity to put this bogus sign on the fountain machine next to all the calories of the drinks. I'm thirsty and angry but this cafe really grinds my gears. It says refills cost 1.25 after your first one. The exhibits aren't bad though but I feel like a zoo animal drinking watered down Powerade while I meander around the grounds. I went heavy on the ice and got Powerade to cheat the system. They were out of tea but I bet it was all sweet tea so they can fatten you up before feeding you to the lions. I think I've written enough, I'm going back for another refill. read more

This was a fun zoo experience! We came on a sunny day in January, so it was a bit nippy, but not too bad. Due to the cold, some animals were not out, but that's okay. There were still a lot that were out and about and moving around! This zoo has a good variety of animals, pretty much all the typical ones you'd expect, and they are organized by the continent that they come from, which I think is a nice learning opportunity. Like most zoos, it's a bit of a maze when you're walking around, but they do provide a colorful map with pictures to help guide you along. We ventured through in a reasonable order and saw all the animals. At some exhibits, you can pay a little extra and feed the animals. I saw this for the river otters (50 cents for a handful of feed) and giraffes ($3 for straw). The river otter is always one of my favorites. One of them was swimming around and gladly took the feed we handed out. Several of the big cats were up, pacing back and forth, which was odd (were they just bored??); they are so beautiful and it was neat to see them up close. They also have a stingray bay where you can touch different stingrays. Cool! In the center of the park, there is a cafe that has restrooms and food, but that's the only stop I saw throughout. There are water fountains, but to me they looked really dingy. That brings me to one of two critiques of the zoo: 1) A lot of the exhibits looked old and dingy. I know the zookeepers know better than I do what is important regarding quality of life, so I'm just going to leave it at that. 2) They had a large indoor section of taxidermy animals and nothing about the awfulness of hunting and poaching for show. This made me really sad at all the big and small animals they had in there with no indication of why the animals were killed. If I didn't know better, I would walk through there thinking this is all okay to have these stuffed animals on display (some endangered, etc). Altogether, it was a nice zoo experience. We went to the zoo last week as we were visiting Montgomery and needed something to kill some time for our kids. We went around 4 and I believe they closed at 5:30--- however they started putting ALL of the animals up before we even saw them. We paid full price for barely 1/3 of the animals. Honestly though- aside from that disappointment, I have to say that these zoo facilities are some of the most ran down I have ever seen. Ive been to zoos in St Louis, DC, San Antonio, Kansas City, Nashville, Memphis, and Miami and have never seen more deplorable conditions... The good people of Montgomery need to put some funding behind this zoo and bring it back to life. read more

This review is specifically for BOO ZOO - Diva Darling (my 4-yr old daughter) loved Boo Zoo, so much that she wanted to come back another night for more fun. We arrived well before the opening at 6, and had to wait about 25 minutes to snake through the line (I was not impressed with ticket sales b/c of lack of organization/direction for the growing crowd.) But once we were through the gates, there were enough carnival games that the lines were not long - usually just 3-5 kids per carnival game, which I didn't think was too bad for a Saturday night crowd. There were several areas set up with easy carnival games which the children win prizes/candy. We also enjoyed the non-scary hayride and watched a 30-min animal presentation (owl, snake, kinkajou, bat). We spent just under 2 hours at the event. So if the target audience (my daughter) is raving about it, then I must deem it a success. (Although I think it's a bit pricey for family fun - $15/ticket. Wasn't too bad for just of the 2 of us but if we took our family of 4, I'm not sure I'd be raving about it for $60). read more

I don't have a lot of experience with zoos, so my review is going to be limited in that aspect. But I genuinely enjoyed bringing my family here. We had two babies and two grandparents with my husband and I, and we had a blast. I was actually pretty impressed with it all- didn't know something that well-done could exist in a smaller city like Montgomery. We'll be coming back again and again as the kids get older, for sure! Also, Rhinos are terrifyingly huge. Just saying. read more

We took a group of 8 down to Montgomery for the Zoo and we are very glad we did. The park is laid out well and very clean. Some of the exhibits were very nice such as the large open enclosures for the Elk and Carabo. We paid the extra four dollars per persons for walk inside the Mann Museum located on the left side of the park. They had all kind of fossils and stuffed grizzly bears, polar bears and just about everything else that you could think of. Very cool. read more

Great zoo for a smaller metropolitan area. Enclosures are small with multiple viewing areas so unless you come after 4:45, you should see most of the animals. Walk ways are 95% shaded so it's cooler than the rest of the town. read more

The zoo it's self has all the large animals (lions, tigers, elephants). But it's a "small" zoo. It needs some updating and a fresh coat of paint. For the price it was not bad. But does need some work done. The good part was where the cafe is you can see some of the animals while eating. And they have a little train that takes you around the zoo, a "ski lift" that takes you around the zoo. And of course you can feed the giraffes. If you want a Great San Diego zoo, this is not the place. But it's a good way to spend a few hours. But come early since they do put the animals away about 90 minutes before the zoo closes. read more

Went to the zoo for the first time yesterday and was extremely impressed with the variety of animals. I was admittedly skeptical at first after going to numerous other large zoos like Washington and Atlanta, but after the trip with our 2 year old it was fantastic. We spent about 2 hours and was able to see everything there. We didn't do the train or sky ride, but it was a nice visit, plus it wasn't very crowded being February. I think our favorite part of the zoo was how close you can get to the animals. Highly recommend it. We bought zoo passes so numerous visits await us for the rest of the year. read more

This is a fun little zoo. Comfortable size, not too small. Good variety of animals to see. The animals all seem fairly content and relaxed. Lots to do, including the skylift that takes you over the zoo, and a chance to feed and interact with some animals, like the giraffes. Can take your time and not feel rushed or overcrowded. I think they are planning new exhibits too. Go during the cooler months, and the animals seem to be more active. Definitely recommend this if you find yourself in Montgomery. The pygmy hippos were my favorite! Also there's a nice playground area for the little ones to burn off some steam, during your visit. read more

We really enjoyed many aspects of the zoo. It was pretty clean (walkways and tables, at least) and there was a large variety of animals to see. Feeding the giraffe was so much fun and my two year olds still mention it. I like that it is walkable in one visit and the shade made for great weather. CONS: First off... the food leaves much to be desired. I wish they would utilize all the space in the center of the cafe and expand the food options. The current situation reminds me of a concession stand selection but three times as costly. I'd love an actual restaurant of some kind. My kids have food allergies and the fried junk isn't an option for them. Please expand the food! Next- the bathrooms were gross. Like toilets overflowing with toilet paper gross. The train was broken the day we visited which sent the kids into meltdowns. My final con- some of the animal enclosures were tiny and the animals didn't seem totally happy (the lynx, for example.
