The chef has actually *been* to Mexico, and the food is great and seems quite authentic. The steak is huge and tasty, the share platters are probably too much for one person, but if you try really hard.... The decor isn't as overtly and insensitively Mexi-themed as other restaurants -- no sombreros or 'señor/señorita' toilet doors, but there's no escaping the fact that you're above a pretty average pub. The music has an occasional Mexican tune thrown in, but is mostly inoffensively middle of the road. This restaurant is a hidden gem, and worth finding.

Being Mexican American I have very high expectations in the so called "mexican dishes" I've come across while visiting and unfortunately Oz has let me down once again. I ordered the nachos & my wife ordered the chicken burrito with rice/beans. My guacamole was brown & the nachos were dry. I mentioned to the waitress that my guac was brown & she explained that due to the mixing of salsa & black pepper, it turns color. I knew that was bull crap because no matter the method you prepare it, it should always be green & vibrant. My wife's burrito was boring & lacked the essentials to constitute it as a burrito (I.e. beans, sour cream, pico de gallo, guac etc). Well after $71 later we walked out of there very disappointed. I still have faith though that I will find a decent mexican restaurant.

I honestly felt the cheese they had on top was the cheese that was supposed to be in my burrito. You usually have both lol. I also decided to try rice in and on the side of the burrito and boy that was my big mistake. The rice was overlooked, hard, stale, any other synonyms you can think of, fill them in. I had a VB which was probably my favorite part of the meal. When asked upon paying my bill how it was, my server said the rice was a Tex Mex style. I've never had Tex Mex personally, I like to keep my food genres separate, and she said that's how the rice is supposed to be. Oh I should mention I did come right when they opened for dinner at 530 so everything should've been fresh. Now I can't say if that's the true style of Mexican style Tex Mex rice, but I personally did not enjoy it. It was very off putting. She said that that's how it is prepared and it is cooked under the broiler to get that crunch. I could not get the idea of it being old and served to me. After I paid my 35 dollar meal I didn't eat, I left to go get McDonalds. This was a sad night indeed.

It's a good idea to book a table as this Montes gets booked up. They also provide takeaway which I often go for. They need to jump on the internet and fix up there takeaway menu. The staff seem nice. I've only dined in once and it took 40 minutes for them just to take our order which was very disappointing.
