I was feeling Mexican while visiting my dad. I grew up with my favorite Mexican restaurant called montereys. I know this place isn't the same but, I wanted to try it. Looking at the menu, I was trying to figure out what I wanted when I saw a Shrimp Burger..... never heard of that, what? Shrimp, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion.... Ok. I think I need to try this. Sipping on my 32 ounce Dos Equis Amber I couldn't wait to try it. It finally came. It looked amazing. It had potato wedges and they were great! It came with some sauce which was also amazing and I took a bite. Bruh. O M G. This burger will have me coming back tomorrow to get it again! It was even better than I thought it could be. It paired nicely with my Dos Equis Amber. On top of this, the server was very friendly and perfect. No complaints at all. The bathroom was very clean and smelled nice and .. had paper towels! I absolutely loved everything about this place. I only have one small complaint. My 32 ounce mug was not frozen. A frozen mug always boosts my happiness. But, that's an easy fix. This review is based on their Sunday buffet. This is my favorite place in the Braselton area for Sunday buffet, hands-down. You have to try egg and chorizo chimichangas, make your own tacos, and the bbq chicken! Upon entering you will be greeted by a hostess who will sit you down where you like. Before you order your drink and go to town! Buffet Setup: They start you off at the desserts, but that might not be a bad thing. As you go down you come into jellos, salads, cooking station for omelette and maybe even fresh quesadillas. They then have a plethora of Tex-med favorites: make your own hard/ soft tacos or taco bowl salads. Soups, Mini chimichangas, bbq chicken, rice, beans, cheese of all kind, and even mini quesadillas, corn dogs, and pizza for the kiddo. Dessert: they have a couple of cakes, cheesecake, churros, flan, fruit and jellos. Service: Overall service is great! Servers are quick to fill up drinks and clear plates for buffet patrons. Food on the line is all filled up and hot! You can't go with anything they provide. Price: Price per adult is $9.99 and kids under 3 are FREE! I've been a couple times and have been pleased with the quality of food. I don't love the chips or salsa, but the entrees have been better than I was expecting for standard Mexican food. I highly recommend getting a torta, this one was great and I loved the bread they had it on. I would recommend swapping the fries for beans and rice. The service was good and there were plenty of accessory staff to refill chips, salsa and waters which definitely helps the experience. Parking is good here and it's just down the road from Chateau Elan. The inside was relatively clean and they have plenty of seating with a back area that is blocked off for busier times. read more

This is my first time here being that we have five or 10 Mexican restaurants and a 3 mi.² area I've never figured out why. Restaurant is large and clean and the service is very good. Seems to have most of your standard Mexican fare and a full bar. Chips and salsa put on the table as soon as you sit down and our waitress showed up soon after. We ordered a beer, look at the menu and after about 5 to 7 minutes we got our drinks and order the food. Chips and salsa are good and addictive as always and the place looked busy enough to have repeat customers so trust they have their favorites. So if you're on 211 just off 85 looking for Mexican this is the first one you'll see coming from the freeway. Large parking lot as location is on the corner end of the building so it looks like a good place for taco Tuesday if you're looking to chill. Some of the other Mexican restaurants are more crowded and louder so I actually preferred this one because I didn't feel like screaming!! Recommend! read more

Bad Ass! What a great surprise to find this little gem. We are always on the hunt for great fajitas and this place did not disappoint! Hiking is taking my husband and I to towns we have never visited before and new restaurants to try. At this time, we usually cannot assume a restaurant is open for dine in so we call ahead. This was open on a Sunday early afternoon and we were able to order off the menu (apparently Sunday's are usually a brunch here). At any rate, we started out with a standard Margarita on the rocks. It was pretty good but we have definitely had better at mexican restaurants so we were a tad disappointed. We both order fajitas... I ordered the vegetable ones and my husband ordered the shrimp ones. We made a note to ourselves to share next time. It was lots of food when it arrived. That is not a bad thing but after hiking we tend to overeat if presented with too much food. I requested black beans with mine instead of refried beans. They delivered the standard dish with refried beans but quickly fixed the error for us. The fajitas were excellent. We both enjoyed our meals. We thought they were both flavorful and a good portion. I requested corn tortillas and they were light and may have been housemade. The only disappointment was the margarita which we expect to be excellent so I took a star off for that. The food was very, very good. We would definitely return to this restaurant if in the area again. The server was very courteous to us and checked with us fairly often because we were drinking water as well as our Margarita and kind of devoured the chips and salsa rather quickly after we arrived. They brought us another basket of chips but, thankfully, I managed to stay away from that after the fajitas arrived. Nice inside dining area with plenty of room to spread out so they can follow their safety requirements. Support locally owned restaurants... we recommend this one. If we lived closer, we would come back to try the Sunday brunch when it becomes available again. Pretty rough first and last time. The cheese dip, chips, and dinner was all cold. Not even a little warm. Like been sitting out all day cold. Only gave this two stars because the waitress was very sweet and attentive. Kitchen staff probably needs to be fired though. Absolutely unacceptable. read more

We are from California. This place is amazing! We ate at the bar and the margaritas were so good! The food was the best and the bartender Jessica was the amazing. She helped us out in picking food to drinks! We really enjoyed the small quesadillas and the shrimp appetizer was yummy and delicious! We sure will be back! read more

Server was quick and attentive. Chips & salsa arrived immediately, but chips were cold. Entrees both contained steak (our gauge of good Mexican food). The meat was stringy and chewy, was listed as "grilled" steak and there is no way this was grilled. Seemed like pre cooked in crockpot batches and kept warm on a steam table. When eating by yourself for business sometimes places make you feel rushed, however I never received that feeling here! I have eaten at this restaurant many times, but have alway gone with a group. Last night I went by myself and I experience horrible customer service. I arrived at 7p. and ask the hostess for a booth. She ask for me to give her a minute. A couple (2 people ) came in the door behind me and after a few minutes she got them a booth. I was ask twice if I want to sit at the bar and twice I said "no I want a booth". I was passed over three more times with parties of two or more and continued to wait. After some discussion with my neighbors on which restaurants we wished were open (during the Great Ice Storm of January 2018, where everything was shut down), a lot of them said they wanted Monterrey's! They highly recommended this place, so we decided to give them a shot the other night, when they were open, of course. We started with the complimentary chips and salsa, and ordered a queso dip with jalepenos ($3). In general, if I don't like a restaurant's chips and salsa, it's a deal breaker for me. Fortunately, I like theirs! The chips are not too thin and the salsa was flavorful. The salsa could use more of a kick (spicy), but the jalepenos in the queso dip made up for it. My only gripe is that most of our chip basket had tiny, broken pieces. For our entrees, we ordered the chilaquiles ($8) and chicken torta ($8). Normally, my SO gets his chilaquiles with salsa verde, but the menu states not to make any substitutions. He thought it was okay, but recommends not getting the grilled onions on top (his preference). I ordered the torta because I wanted something I could pack half for lunch the following day. The sandwich was okay but I prefer for my bread to be toasted. Our waitress was friendly and came by often enough to ask if everything was alright, but never offered to get us more chips/salsa/water. I guess that's smart on her end, so that these things don't go to waste if we didn't want it. Overall, it didn't live up to my neighbors' hype, but we will come back to try their other menu items. I hope their "Mexican" tacos are the legit stuff that you can find on Buford Highway, and not the Americanized ones! Someone please take pictures for the Yelp page if you've had it! read more

My husband and I went for lunch today and we're pleased to see that at 2:00 it wasn't very busy. (Aside from one table of obnoxiously loud women that made the place seem busier than it was.) Our server was polite and attentive. The service was definitely better than a lot of restaurants. The salsa was okay. Pretty bland and needed more cilantro and onion for sure. But it wasn't bad. We added lemon juice and salt, which helped. Fajitas were a jewel. Steak was very tender and perfectly cooked. Vegetables not over cooked. Husband's enchilada and Taco were tasty. Tasty queso (add jalapenos!), the salsa was pretty good, and I really liked the rice and beans, but the ground beef in the tacos and the echilada really left something to be desired -- it was dry and pretty tasteless. I'm giving this 5 stars because it meets or exceeds my expectations on salsa, options & over all quality, but what really wins for me is their chicken soup. I can't find any other place that makes it as good. Other places are too salty, too chunky or just too over powering in one flavor or other. Here the flavors are very balanced. Perfect take home in a cold day! I also know that, even though I'm not much into margaritas, the owner takes great pride in creating new varieties & aims for perfection. We quit eating at Monterrey's several years ago when we discovered El Centinella down by Kroger on Friendship & Spout Springs Rd. Out of convenience of location, we recently decided to give Monterrey's a try again and found that it had vastly improved past its generic, over-crowded menu.
