If you are looking for a really good staff that treats you like family and wants you to get better. Angel in their PT staff and Antoinette in their OT staff just fantastic. So many nurses, Savannah and Paloma and Stephanie a few Marias , and so many more names that I am forgetting. My father is 94 years old and was at Monterey Palms twice. We were so thrilled that we got him back there the second time and their faces lit up when they saw my father. If you're looking to do serious work and get better this is your place . read more

My dad was here for two months and never ONCE saw a doctor. While he was there, he developed a skin infection (which WE identified, and a nurse cleaned and wrapped it). Daily PT/OT appointments are 15 minutes long. Top staff are unapproachable and once my dad stopped showing lots of progress (he had broken vertebrae - how was he supposed to walk far and make lots of progress?), they launched a campaign to get him out of there, backed by all senior members of their staff. He died a week and a half later. The owner is a doctor, and is in the facility once a week to count his money (according to my mom, who sees the best in people.) He never sees patients, and the rest of the staff seem very unhappy. If you are thinking of putting a loved one here, don't. They might not come out at all (or they might come out on death's doorstep, as my dad did.) read more

I stayed at this facility twice. My first stay was pretty good compared to the skilled nursing facility I was at. While most of the staff was friendly, The executive director never bothered to introduce himself to me. Compared to the previous skilled nursing facility, the Physical Therapy was just OK and the Wound Care services were also just OK. The second time, most of the CNA's were great. We had open communication and they were patient with me. Others, not so much. The Physical Therapy had a goal for me, which wasn't much of a goal at all. If adjustments had to be made to any equipment during the time of my therapy, those adjustments were counted in that time, so I barely got a Physical Therapy that day. As far as Wound Care is concerned, additional wounds should not have occurred while the old loans were being treated. There's something very wrong there. During both stays, I found the food with the exception of their beef meals to be really bad. The fact that I am a diabetic I should not have been given meals with rice, corn, and bread, and no protein. In conclusion, I would not recommend Monterey Palms. read more

Wish I could give a lower rating...Absolutely the last place you would want to put a loved one in. The staff from the top person down to the bottom level employee has little regard for the patients. Why they ever got into nursing is the question. They have ZERO COMPASSION OR EMPATHY for any of the patients. This facility should be shut down or every single person on the staff FIRED!!! Honestly I wouldn't let them care for my pet. The staff doesn't answer the call buttons when a patient needs them. Patients sit in their own poo because the staff is too busy picking their noses. They barely follow State rules and laws. I see way too much apathy from each and every staff member. It has become obvious why they do not have a higher rating. They need to remember why they chose nursing as a career, TO CARE FOR OTHERS!!! No one forced any of you to become nurses!!! I recommend you all find another line of work.!!! Skilled Nursing Facility I just spent two weeks at the Monterey Palms Healthcare Rehabilitation Center in Palm Desert. I was transferred there from Eisenhower Medical so I could learn how to use my legs, following a bout of kidney failure. I have never been in a skilled nursing facility - even as a visitor - in my 77 years so, having nothing to compare it with, this will be a one-off review. The first thing I noticed was the general aura of care and kindness, The intake ritual was without drama, although having my wife at hand to answer questions which befuddled me was a great help. Even through the mental fog, I was surprised at the number of staff on hand. Over my fortnight, there were nurses, nurses' aides, food service people, housekeepers, administrative staff, maintenance people, managers and, of course the training staff. And those are just the teams with whom I came in direct contact. If I had any complaint, it would be the food. Two things: 1. There's a reason it's called "institutional food." Perfectly serviceable. Totally filling, Nothing that would be featured in the NY Times' cooking section. 2. The facility is a rehab center, not a cruise ship. Lunch and dinner rotate through various versions of chicken and turkey breast. My breakfast was always the same: Oatmeal or cream of wheat cereal, scrambled eggs, some bread or biscuit, I finally realized that one of the aspects of breakfast is you can eat it before you put your teeth in for the day, if you want. The training staff was beyond excellent. They are divided between physical and occupational trainers. For my needs, one group concentrated on upper body exercises; the other, my legs. When I arrived, I could barely stand. Had they let me, I could have walked out when I left, I pray I never need another stint at a rehabilitation facility, but if I did, I would come back here. read more

The absolute worst facility. I wouldn't leave my Dog under their care. My mother was under their care for 4 days of Hell. Never gave her the daily prescribed diuretic pill, put a diaper on her when she uses the toilet, never got her up. She was in such a state had to get transported to the Hospital ER. Diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, sores on backside and more confused than initially. Doctor's stated if left there 1-2 more days would've died. Would give 0 if possible. read more

I have had the pleasure of being a patient at Monterey Palms Health Care Facility for 12 weeks. I have received nothing but the BEST care. The nurses and assistants are prompt, courteous, caring and professional. The administration is visible and accessible having introduced themselves and checked back. Housekeeping was amazing. But even more the physical therapy and occupational therapy was MIRACULOUS! From not standing or walking for 5 months, they had me standing in 2 weeks and walking a few weeks later. My 87 year-old husband was at Monterey Palms for 5 weeks of IV treatment for Sepsis. Our history with nursing facilities has not been a very positive experience but home treatment was way too expensive so we didn't have a choice. Within the first day our experience seemed good, then, day by day, we became more impressed and very pleased with the level of care he received. All are caring professionals! So I had to stay here back in 2014 (this was supposed to be my place of rehabilitation - medical care & physical therapy). The physical therapy lady I had - she gets 5 stars (I don't know if she is there still) but she was very nice and friendly. She was also very patient, I had to relearn to walk and strengthen my leg. Anyway, the majority of the nurses here had terrible bedside manner. I know a lot of them were more friendly to me, because I was like their age (I was the youngest patient there). But you're just like stuck in your room all day (like a hospital) and the nurses come in/out to give you your meds and that's like it. If you ask for something or need something, they're not friendly about it. Staying in that place is way more depressing than staying in the hospital. I wanted to go back to the hospital. I would do my daily walks inside the facility and you would see all these old people (most in wheelchairs) just sitting in this hallway (yes, most of them have "gone out to lunch & have not returned"), but they're literally just sitting there, no music, no television, nothing. Some of them would just be sitting there facing the way. It was just such a depressing sight. I ended up getting an infection when I was there, had a very high fever for a couple of days, had awful chills, could not sleep. I definitely needed medical attention but they would just "wait for it to pass"; after like 3 days of being miserable, an ambulance had to take me to the hospital. Also, the room I was in - the AC was broken. I was there in October, it's still warm AF in October. They only had a fan which was basically just blowing the warm air around the room. I don't think this place is very sanitary, needs like a FULL clean down. I feel so bad for the people that are staying there, it is not a place anyone should call "home". And even though this place is for those with not a lot of money (not a boogey nursing home), but it just terrible. This place needs better nurses (that actually care about the patients), needs to be cleaned, needs things to be fixed, etc. Worst 3 weeks of my life at this miserable place. read more

The care was fine. Not very personable. We had a problem with the front desk. They rarely answered the phone. And we Never got a call back from anyone after leaving a message. Laundry was a serious issue. We brought over more and more clothes for my Dad. The clothes rarely returned to his closet. One day he had on someone else's shirt. We brought him home two weeks ago and we still don't have his clothes. These were tshirts that actually meant something to him. Many were gifts. I'm not giving up. There are bags of my Dads clothes still there. But I have yet to speak to anyone about their return. read more

My 83 yr old mother was admitted a short time ago for Rehab after surgery. I don't get the past reviews, from what I've seen, facility is very clean, nursing staff is attentive, food is fine, and the rehab is good. I live 3 hrs away, Every time I call for an update the nurses are extremely helpful and informative. Our 99 year old mother was admitted after a spinal surgery from Eisenhower. This is a clean, well-run facility. You do have to make an appointment to see your loved one, so keep that in mind. My reason for not giving a 5 start review is that it times a little too long to get someone to respond after pressing the call button. 15 minutes to have a 99 year old (or anyone) to wait to be taken to the bathroom is beyond a reasonable expectation. However, having said that, if you or someone you know needs the rehabilitation help of Monterey Palms, you've checked into the right place. read more

Two stars is actually higher than they deserve, but since the nurses and the P/T staff are very nice, and should get 3-4 stars, I've left this review at 2. The total lack of organization is appalling. Questions asked many times don't get answered; items brought to the front desk for delivery to my dad's room never made it and no one knows what happened. And don't try to get an update from 8-9 in the morning. I got a call at 11pm that his oxygen level had fallen; he might not make it thru the night; did I want to come see him. Guess what? After many unsuccessful calls this morning to find out how he was, I FINALLY got a supervisor to tell me that he's just fine!!!! The meter placed on his finger didn't register properly. So how come no one bothered to call me this morning to tell me that? I chose this place for my convenience since it's not far from home, but probably should have driven further for a better run facility. Can't wait to get him out of here and back to his memory care community. read more

Just tried to call and they do not even answer the phone and no message to allow leaving a message. My gal pal is in and she says it is worse than even noted online. Facility should be closed - seems like it is anyway - not enough staff. Gal pal there for 4 days and no PT - started ambulating on her own when she finally got a walker so she can take herself to the bathroom instead of peeing on herself. TRAGEDY!!! My Dad just went through a major surgery at Eisenhower Medical Center where he stayed for a week. We had no idea what they had in store for him. This place is a big "MEDICARE DUMP". It's where the hospital dumps Medicare patients to save money. This place is disgusting. It's filthy, dirty, beat up furniture. The TV's are bolted to the dressers. The floors are filthy, no one cleans, sitting in this place makes you feel like your in an Insane Asylum. read more

My 86 year old mother had major surgery and spent two months at the Monterey Palms Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF). As far as SNF go, I am pleased to say that this facility is one of the best. No SNF is perfect, but at this facility everyone from the Director, to Supervisors, RN's, CNA's, physical, occupational and speech therapists, and housekeeping staff were caring, professional and overall wonderful humans. Even when minor challenges arose, they addressed the issues as quickly as possible. The staff treated my mom and me with great respect and good humor. They answered my questions and helped train me on the care my mom will need once home. If my mom has to go back for rehab, I wouldn't hesitate to have her go to Monterey Palms. I wish I could call out the staff by name, but I don't want to miss anyone because they all deserve a huge thank you and to know how much they are appreciated. Thank you all! read more

My mom spent 42 days at this nice facility. what makes it nice? The staff is truly amazing and high quality. The facility follows strict COIVID protocols with every visitor, testing you when you visit - I should know, I went to visit my mom on 12/23 and I tested "positive" for COVID - which was a shock. I was not allowed to visit again for 10 days - keeping everyone (even the most vulnerable) safe and COVID-free. Excellent policy and superb front staff and nurses. The place is clean, does not small, and has all types of medical professionals working to assist and support the patients. Carmella Galzote is a truly amazing example of the highest quality of caring nursing services. She helped my mom at every juncture of her stay. Remarkable! This is not easy work, but the staff at Monterey Palms is doing a really fine job. I would highly recommend this facility if your loved one is in need of nursing services. Family member stayed here a week after hospital to recover from pneumonia. She was treated with caring and respect. I was impressed at the cleanliness of this facility - it is immaculate. One cheerful custodian is constantly mopping the floors. No urine smell here. The PT was effective and cheerful. Not sure about older reviews but they don't reflect their current operations. This is a great facility for your beloved family member. My mom has been in this facility for more than a week and all the nurses have been great to her. We are greatful to God that he put my mom in this facility. Nowhere else would you see the care that they give here. Every staff in this place is great!! About the food once you tell them that you dont like it they are willing to make you something else with more flavor. I know this because when my mom doesnt like the food that they make , they give her other options. All the staff are willing to work with you on anything that you need. Also the wound care is awesome at this place, my moms wound has healing pretty quick because the nurses everyday are cleaning it. Putting a loved one into a hospital or other similar facility is very difficult. My mother had suffered a stroke and needed speech, physical, and occupational therapy plus 24 hour care. She was being treated at Eisenhower until the insurance ran out and we needed to take her to a secondary facility. Visiting these places is no easy task. Most of the residents are very sick, elderly, and in terrible shape--it is no resort or spa, that's for sure. I researched a couple of places before settling on Monterey Palms. The other places I saw were awful experiences. I have been pleasantly surprised by how well this place runs and with the quality of the staff. It isn't a "medicare dump" as other have claimed, but it is not the Ritz Carlton either. The rooms are adequate--not too fancy, but clean and serviceable. The building is old but is well maintained (they were steam cleaning the carpets during my last visit). I have seen much worse places than this, believe me. But you have to tailor your expectations. As with any facility of this size/type, your loved-ones care is also dependent upon you. They have up to 99 patients, each with their own demanding care, so to expect them to treat your mother like their own is unrealistic. My mother was changed, fed, and looked on by the staff on a fairly regular basis, but they are busy and don't do more than what needs to be done in a careful and considerate way before moving on to the next patient. I most definitely did not see ANY abuse or neglected patients, and I'm here day and night. To the person who posted a "list of their complaints" should have indicated that many of them were from years and years ago, not a current situation. I can also attest to the therapeutic staff being excellent. We were certainly spoiled at Eisenhower, but the quality of the therapy, the patience and knowledge of the staff, equaled her previous care. As I said, taking a loved one to a nursing facility is stressful, and visiting these places is no day at the beach. But with what is required of the staff and the demands that it takes to feed, care, and house so many people, Monterey Palms does a very good job. read more
