But the pies are yum and everything's fresh, and really you don't want anything other than standard bakery fare from a bakery. Nothing wrong with sticking to the classics when you're doing them well. Rather than being on Great North Road like most of the Avondale shops this place is just round the corner on Rosebank, which is good because it feels a bit quieter and less hectic to me. If I'm in Avondale and I want a good, cheap lunch this is where I go.

Maybe it's because I've just moved home from America but I absolutely love it! We came here on a Sunny Sunday arvo to catch up with friends over a few quiets. The outdoor area here is huuuge and with several long tables with bench seats it is the perfect place to catch up with a group. It must also be said they have done a great job of making the outdoor area as sheltered as possible and they even have a retractable roof for when it inevitably starts raining (this is Auckland after all!). As for the drinks, both us girls where in the mood for a refreshingly, cold beer and opted for a jar of the Monteith's Pilsner ($8). I thought the list was pretty reasonable in both price and variety although I do think they could do with a few more boutique beers on the list as opposed to the usual mass produced varieties. The boys on the other hand were nursing rather significant hangovers and were in need of a drink of the non-alcoholic variety. ASAP. They ended up settling on a Sweet Alice; a strong cup of Kokako filtered coffee with condensed milk on the side. Heaping the rather generous serving of condensed milk into their coffee both of them seemed pretty chuffed with their decision. All in all this is a very pleasant way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon and I am looking forward to coming back soon to try their rather tasty looking menu.

Don't be shocked when you see the beer missing from the menu, it isn't on there so ask the lovely wait staff. Gluten free options are available. Based on my experience you can request variations to menu items to fit your dietary requirements. I was impressed with my salad which not only looked good but tasted amazing. Greens with thin sliced mango, cherry tomatoes, micro greens and walnuts with a vinaigrette. Friendly staff, good surroundings, indoor and outdoor seating options and a decent menu. I'll be back, with a bigger crowd.

Overlooking Monte Cecilia Park at the top of the slight slope, there's a stable peace about the place. Now going back to Homestead cafe for food, the simple charm was still there. But the food, the food! The menu boasts half a page of all day breakfast including granola, shaksuka with poached eggs and slow cooked mushroom - all under which were the famous Homestead crumpet options. For lunch though, we opted for a little fancy and it didn't take long to settle on braised oxtail with savoy cabbage, cauliflower puree and salsa verde. The first mouthful was an instant wow. The meat fell effortlessly off the bone and as cliche as it sounds, melted in my mouth. It got rich pretty fast though and towards the end, I slightly regretted ordering a crumpet to share. We ordered a lemon curd crumpet with lemon curd, labneh and fresh coconut to tickle our sweet tooth fancy, all washed down with Flight coffee. Definitely ambitious after the oxtail but I felt like I couldn't leave Homestead without sticking my fork in their crumpets. I would describe the food as fancy home-made food. They're those comforting classic dishes you may find at a planned dinner party, elevated to another level by chef Sam Mannering - food writer and cookbook author. Overall the pricing is high for what you get but if you nab a table outside the view makes it worth your while. Service is a bit intermittent, a couple of the staff were incredible! When the rest felt like they didn't want to be there. Seating inside is minimal and if it's busy you'll feel like you're standing on top of someone while they eat when you're waiting to pay, outside is a lot better, more spacious sitting on a table on the veranda. They have heaters and wind blockers for the cold days if you're worried!
