The hardest part of my job is telling people they'll only get about 10%." He discussed lowering expectations before actually looking at the diamond. After a brief inspection, I was offered $3,000. Referencing a percentage of the appraisal made the offer sound reasonable, but insurance appraisals reflect replacement cost, not actual market pricing for GIA-certified diamonds. After I declined, I was asked what I hoped to get, which felt more like negotiation than valuation. I was polite and not pressured to sell, but the process left me uncomfortable with how the offer was framed. It had a very very "pawn shop" feel to it.
