Being from out of town and having traveled extensively in almost all 50 states and a lot internationally I know good food! This place still has THE BEST blueberry pancakes I have ever eaten and their bacon is amazing! My husband also loves the omelettes which are stuffed with meat! The prices are incredible too! We look forward to coming here whenever we are in town! Anyone who has a problem with this place must not like good food! The menu was funky, which should have been a sign but we said "eh we're here already" the menu didn't have too many options, the prices were confusing, they also base price on how big you want your food, "modest, ample and extravagant ". We came here in late May on a roadtrip. The place is a family owned business and the inside although not very big seats enough people and doesn't give you the feeling of being crowded. They also have a little stall right outside if you wanted to grab something quick and get it to go. The food is very good and the way they do their menu is brilliant. The hand written menu is also a very charming touch in my opinion. If we pass by Darby, MT again, this is one of the spots we will definitely come back to. read more

This is a small place but the parking lot was full which I always take as a good sign. And this place is highly rated on Yelp. The decor is unique with corrugated metal on one wall. The menu looked good, but unfortunately for us the dishes we wanted weren't available. They were out of both the wild smoked salmon, spinach, and cream cheese scramble and the Lenny sandwich, which was disappointing. Apparently they don't serve soup on Saturday either. This location is right on the main highway, upon walking in you are greeted by a sign that says cash or local checks only. You seat yourself and the hostess will come to you, the menu is extremely confusing for someone from out of town. I thought the menu prices were pretty good but breakfast ended up being $75 which is way overpriced for eggs, bacon and potato's. Can't really mess up on eggs but the bacon was extremely salty, it did taste smoked but the salt content burned my tongue. Service is okay; people could be a little friendlier. Having been to Darby to visit my parents (who retired to the area) on multiple occasions, I had the pleasure to eat at the Montana Café each time. My parents are regulars at this spot so I went into it thinking that no way could this place live up to the hype. I was wrong. This café is Americana at it's finest offering good old fashioned American style food at a reasonable price. The portions and quality are what you would have expected from a diner like this back in the day, to find this being offered in this day and age is a real treat. I ordered the patty melt and my husband ordered the Big Sky burger with a cup of clam chowder. The burger was a full 1lb. Every meal comes with their huckleberry jello (so good). Honestly one of the best places to eat in all of Montana and the best chicken fried steak I've had anywhere. I tried diners all around the Bitteroot valley and this was by far the best place to go. Family owned and operated it is a great atmosphere. The kids are great waiters and their ability to memorize orders is fascinating. The people in the restaurant are way friendly and make amazing breakfasts and also amazing pastrami sandwiches. I though I was in a NYC deli. We live in Darby and really like the Montana cafe. The tuna melt is great. Just the perfect amount of toasted ness to the bread. Inside the tuna melt is just the right amount of creamy goodness. The pickles are homemade. The carrot cake is super and the portions generous. The staff are friendly and the place is super clean. Husband and I had been driving all day on a 16 day road trip and decided to stop for the night in the quaint micro town of Darby, Montana. After finding an Inn for the night, we had been starving and set out to find any food establishments open. We surmised that we would not find much because it was late (8'ish) and the town had been already shutting down for the night. As it turned out, we found the Montana Café...and they were open! Entering the place, we noted that it was simply decorated with a homey like warmth and the dining area had basic 12' tables with padded chairs. There had been an other couple already eating. We were greeted by a pleasant young man (young 20's) who seemed to be the ONLY one there. The menu was chock full of homemade comfort food choices and the prices were amazing. The young man took our food and drink orders, without writing anything down, and was extremely polite and professional. I could tell this guy had been brought up with good manners and respect. I ordered the half sandwich (BLT) and cup of clam chowder. Husband ordered ....... It took a little bit of time before our food came out but was delivered with an appetizing appearance. I didn't learn until later that the young man's brother was the one in the back...the cook. Ok...this is a family business, cool! Our meal was devoured, like I said earlier - we were hungry. Nothing overly spectacular but good nonetheless. Our bill was less than $20. On the way out, we learned that they open up for breakfast at 7am. With that knowledge, we told the guy that we would return tomorrow for breakfast so we could get back on the road. Our breakfast visit was a little different. The dining area was almost filled to capacity, lucky us that we were able to claim a table before the rest of the town came in. I suppose it being a Saturday morning, around 7am, folks are going to be moving about in town and the Montana Café being the biggest dining facility around, it would stand that business would be very good for the family business. The same young man was the greeter/server/expediter/busser/cashier and was STILL as polite and professional as I had seem him the night before. Like he was completely involved and emotionally vested in the success of his family's business. The dining area was mildly noisy, but it seemed to be that folks were simply enjoying their individual conversations and their mornings. Our guy was seen hustling a tray of fresh coffees to the various tables and another young man (looked just like our guy!) had been expediting and hustling clearing and overall customer welfare. With his politeness, it was clear the two guys were cut from the same cloth. It took a bit of time for our guy to get to our table and take the order, and unfortunately it took even longer for the back room staff to complete it. I had ordered the simple two-egg plate with tomatoes and toast. Husband had ordered the tall stack of French toast. Again, the pricing of the breakfast menu (different menu from the dinner menu the night before) was phenomenally low, given the amount of food provided. Husband and I were very happy with our breakfast and once finished, waited up at the front counter for our guy to catch a breath and cash us out. We had learned that this establishment is, in fact, owned by his mom and dad, and that his two brothers, two sisters and himself ARE the staff. The Murray family had acquired/started this business 6.5 years ago and everyone pitches in. We left Darby feeling very optimistic for this business and much respect to Mr. and Mrs. Murray for instilling great values and work ethics to their kids. We wish great success to the Murray clan. If you find yourself in the tiny town of Darby, Montana, do yourself a favor and patronize this hard working family run establishment. This is not a 5-star restaurant like you might find in Hollywood or New York City, but this little gem IS well worth your time. read more

Stopped here for some lunch and it was hands-down the best tuna melt I've had outside of the ones I make myself. Perfectly thick and toasted sourdough with a delicious tuna mix and just the right amount of cheese. The onion rings were spot on too. Chill vibe and friendly service.
