I've only ever been to the bar, but with its cask lined walls and comfy armchairs it makes for a really cosy place to relax and explore the vineyard's excellent selection of wines. Moreover, if you visit on a sunny day you also have the option of sitting outside on their adjoining terrace, which has stunning views of the Kentish countryside. It may not be the cheapest place for a drink, but I've found Chapel Down's wine to be consistently good and it's definitely well worth a visit. Of course, if you can't find a nice, sober person to drive you there and back and you don't feel like hiking, there is a shop downstairs which sells all of their wines to take away. It also does tastings and sells a range of deli products which are perfect for a snack or a spur-of-the-moment picnic in the countryside.

Apart from the lack of seats, also realized when we got there that we didn't really feel like a sandwich and since we were hungry, just decided to go next door to the Burger Bros, and am very glad we did so! I really like the vibe of this place, and it's mixed identity. So it's a wine bar called Alberrys and then the back/ kitchen is the Burger Bros restaurant space. They were playing cool laid back 70s tunes and I liked the juxtaposition of music with the Americana style menu. Plus they have free wifi and that is an excellent bonus - just ask the server for the password. I ordered a vegetarian slider and a cider and my other diner got a Cajun burger and a mango/orange fruit juice and we split the fries, which were totally fantastic and not at all greasy and nor did they gave that stale oil taste. My veggie slider arrived on a wooden chopping board (cool way to serve the food) and was overflowing with mushroom and roasted red peppers and Haloumi cheese (you could choose between Haloumi or blue cheese and I went with the servers suggestion). I also liked the crunchiness of the fried onion ring and eggplant so the burger's fillings came together in a beautiful medley of fresh and juicy flavours. If there is one thing I would have preferred for next time is that the burger be cut into two, as this would have made it easier to pick up and eat. Cost for two drinks, two burgers and a shared bucket of fries was £25 (rounded down), so not too bad. Oh the ladies loo was a funny experience as I couldn't find toilet paper until I looked up! The roll is placed super awkwardly and I was stretching my hand to get some paper.

Basically split into two section, one half a bar/pub section and the other an area for eating and restaurant. There were around sixty or so people at this wedding meal, and I'm not sure Pissarros had the facilities to accommodate so many people at once. We got to the meal after coming from the church, taking pictures and running through the rain. We sat and waited to be served and talked among ourselves. The head table was served about 30 minutes after getting there, each table not getting their food until 10 - 20 minutes after the people on the last table. So there were two table who still didn't have anything to eat by the time the first three tables had finished! So we mingled and talked among ourselves and bought more drinks. Unfortunately having 60 people in such a small area meant it was extremely humid and getting hot. Although we asked for some fans to be turned on they weren't. Perhaps I'm used to having really good food in London, but the food didn't seem to be as good as it could be. Elle had a steak, chips and a side salad. I had a "big kahuna Cajun burger" with chips and mini ramekin with a grated salad in it. Our friend had the veggie burger, chips which ironically had NO side salad. The Steak was cooked perfectly, but was tough and difficult to get through, it was obviously sitting around a while and wasn't succulent and tasty like you'd want it to be. Chips were fine, and salad was good. We also had a side of olives. My big kahuna Cajun burger wasn't very spicy, I was hoping for more bite and spice to it. Would have been better with a few jalapenos thrown on top or something. The chips were ok, although I had about 5 and I gave my salad to the vegetarian at our table. The Veggie burger was ok, but there was a lot of bread with it and lots of chips too and no salad, which considering she was vegetarian was a little weird. No one had any dessert as we were supposed to go to a reception later at a club and eat cake, and other dessert there. Overall, the staff were pleasant and friendly, the food was pretty good and they tried their best with the problems of having 60 people packed into a small area, wheelchair access and lots of bouncy children who had to sit down for 6 hours and try to behave. The steak was a little on the expensive side, @ £17! The veggie and kahuna burgers were £9 and £9.50 each.

I feel quite excited about writing this review I have read so many fiercely opposing opinions on…read morethe Tuscan Kitchen in Rye that I am itching to join the fight, and I'll tell you now - I am firmly flying the Tuscan flag! We booked a table courtesy of a recommendation, and from reading several very glowing reviews. The trattoria (NOT restaurant) is located on a quaint cobbled street in the charming Sussex town of Rye and is in fact housed within what used to be a very olde worlde teashop! This incongruous setting is your first indication that any preconceived ideas should be left at the door. You're in for an unexpectedly wonderful experience. Looking beyond the low beams and memories of cream teas and doilies, the trattoria is simply arranged with wooden tables, paper napkins and lovely blue glasses from Italy. Don't expect interior design - it is all about the food (although the plates and mugs have all been imported from Italy and had me lusting after them). Loving Italian food I was very excited about the meal and the intoxicating smell of truffles as you walk through the door only heightened the anticipation. Jen, the charming owner, brought us some wine (we just asked her to choose - it was excellent) and some bread and oil to eat while we decided what to order. This was the first teaser for our taste buds. The olive oil had an incredible taste and was made with olives from their own grove in Italy. Ask nicely and they might sell you some - it really is worth it! After salivating over the menu it was time to order. Everything looked delicious but I plumped for Insalata Invernale (a winter salad of pear, blue cheese, walnuts and Tuscan honey) followed by Ravioli Porcini (homemade ravioli in wild mushroom sauce) and finished off with Pollo All 'Aceto Balsamico (strips of chicken in Chianti and aged balsamic, grilled with radichio and truffle oil). My Better Half chose the Antipasto followed by Tuscan meatballs, culminating with beef fillet with a white truffle sauce. It was clear we were in for the long haul; but we were ready! Our food was incredible. It took its time in arriving but that was no matter as we were enjoying the Tuscan wine, the atmosphere and our host's conversation. We really felt as though we were enjoying a home cooked meal in their kitchen in Italy (hence the name of the restaurant as Jen pointed out!). The salad was delicious, and confirmed what I had heard that Franco and Jen source their ingredients from either Tuscany or quality local producers - the flavours and textures really were superb. The antipasto was also great, and could have easily fed two. Before our pasta course arrived we were treated to some truffle honey with Italian hard cheese. This is possibly the most amazing thing I have ever eaten. It felt so decadent, like you were eating something incredibly expensive, I think I'm going to name it liquid gold! Swooning over the truffle honey happily occupied the time waiting for our pasta. Every dish is made to order and comes to your table piping hot, in a reassuring way, letting you know it has been made for you and you alone. It's no surprise that the pasta dishes were delicious but we were both getting a little full and made a mental note that next time we come we'll skip the pasta course and head straight to the meat (unless we haven't eaten for two days previously). Again, no surprise for guessing but our meat course was sensational. Better Half managed to eat all of his, but I have to admit I was a little defeated by my delicious chicken (we had only just finished a full English Breakfast a few hours before)! At this point I should also point out that the "closed" sign was put up on the door. There were only 3 tables being served but Franco and Jen know when to stop. With only Franco in the kitchen they just can't serve up the quality food that they take pride in if the trattoria is overly crowded. There were no complaints from us - it felt like a lock-in in a secret, member's only restaurant! Desert looked enticing but was flatly refused by both of us. Better Half still had room for some 40% grappa though, so it was clear who was driving back to London. Talking of London, I can't stress enough that the quality of food we enjoyed in Rye completely surpassed any experiences of Italian food I have had in London. The prices are also a nice change from London (particularly considering the generous portions), with the meat course averaging at £14.95. In order to digest our food we sat and chatted to Jen and Franco for sometime about their business. They've received a little bit of negative press from customers who have not understood the concept of the Tuscan Kitchen, so here are a few tips! Arrive hungry, with time to spare. It is part of the Slow Food Movement which should give you a clue to ethos behind the food. Don't feel obliged to eat every course - unless of cause you have a huge appetite in which case lucky you!
