Service was relaxed but pretty good in general - this isn't the sort of place to rush things. The menu always looks pretty tasty, and manages be interesting and fresh. It's quite easy for gastropubs to fall into an unimaginative rut with their food. Totally forgot to borrow one of their menus at the end of the evening as it had some great ideas for dishes. I think the thing which put us off in the past was the slightly aloof service. I'm glad to say that the staff on that night were great - clearly from the pashmina and white jeans brigade, but very good none the less.

I was offered tastes of several so that i could make up my mind. Kids had macaroni & cheese with a bucket of chips to share. The fillet and mushroom dish was divine. Creme Brulee was rich, and we shared a cheese plate as well. Yummy. Staff was cheerful and offered to take pictures for us, which turned out well. We all enjoyed the garden. I was so bored and miserable because he kept getting them wrong and he was wearing baggy trousers without a belt. He kept pulling up his trousers and there were some nice ladies there who had to keep looking away because his big ugly bum kept going on show. Eventually they complained and the manager had to come and ask jack to do the tricks outside in the pouring rain. Jack got upset and started asking around if anyone liked magic and everyone groaned and said no please go away. The staff were really nice about it though and the drinks and food was good.

The best meal I have ever had in the UK. On Sundays they have a Carvery which gets you two meats of four available (ham, roast beef, roast pork or turkey. We had heard that the pub was open again after the previous tenant failed to open shop one day before Christmas. It's a lovely pub but hard work and the last guy took his eye off the ball. Now there is new young blood at the helm and I don't know their names which is a shame. Anyway, we were made very welcome and allocated a window table and three menus. It had to be roast beef or lamb and we all went for the beef at £9.25. There was plenty of choice for a chef specialising in fresh local produce and we could have chosen a burger or bass for instance. Anyway, thank goodness we didn't because the roast lunch we were to experience was the best we have sampled for a long time and just about warranted a 10 out of 10. Beautiful meat, rib we think, homemade Yorkshire pudding, beautifully roasted potatoes and parsnips with separate dishes of cauliflower in a bechamel sauce, broccoli, carrots, sugar-snap peas and mashed swede and we all got our own little jug of proper gravy. Piping hot, tasty and great value. The puddings are delicious as well especially the panacotta. So please go along and support this young couple who have just the right approach just and they have trained their staff to achieve the same warm, helpful attitude.
